forearm exercise recommendations?

Postby alecbenzer » Wed May 12, 2010 2:48 am UTC

Anyone have any recommendations for forearm exercises that can be done with free weights?

For what purpose? (Size, sport-specific performance, injury rehab or prevention, etc.)
I had all kinds of plans in case of a zombie attack.
I just figured I'd be on the other side.

Just trying to build my forearm muscles (size, I guess). Not for a sport or for any other specific reason.

Deadl lifts! Alternatively pretty much any free weight exercise with a towel. I use captains of crush grippers, not because I think I particularly need them but I kind them agood stress reliever when I'm studying.

Farmer's walk, with a thick bar if you have access to one. (Or wrap something around a regular bar.)
High-rep dumbbell rows.
Chin-ups off a towel.
And yes, double-overhand non-hook-grip deadlifts.

Some people also do forearm curls with dumbbells, but that seems like a silly exercise.

Get any old straight stick or bar, tie a short length of rope to the middle of it. Tie a weight to the other end of the rope. Hold each end of the bar and extend your arms horizontally. Twist the bar so that the rope winds up on the bar and lifts the weight. Your forearms will burn. Or rock climbing. Rock climbing is always good.

Climbing!

hehe, not something to do in your room, but maybe there is a boulder near your place... I've never felt my forearms so exercised as when "climbing" sideways..
In a gym I went to, they had a rope with some weight tied to and end (not much) and a wooden handle in the other, you had to roll up the rope around the handle by wrist movement, that was heavy too.

guess its similar to the towel thing, towel being easier to get

edit: funny how I just said the same as the post above me... excuse me
must be good idea the n :p

Juggling.

Just get a pack of tennis balls, and have at it. Plus, it really helps improve hand eye coordination; I'm like freaking spider-man ever since I started.

For a good upper body exercise, I cut a slit in mine, filled them with pennies and duct taped them up. They only weigh about 1.5 lbs each, but it does the trick.

I recommend this site:http://homepage.mac.com/abramr/juggling/tutorial/category/index.html

Surprisingly, punch-style knuckle-pushups have done a lot for my forearms. There's this big muscle that sort of loops around to my tricep, and I'm pretty sure I never had one before I started doing these.

Go into the pressup position. with your elbows facing towards your feet. then support yourself on your fists by keeping your wrists straight.
This has been the best for me, but i havn't tried the other suggestions here
