nVidia vs ATI (in general)

Postby Grosie » Sun Jul 11, 2010 2:03 pm UTC

I only think that this has been done for Linux before, so here is a general one.

Personally, I think nVidia, but I'm not sure why...

Today — ATi. No overheating, no "new" cards based on older chips, etc. There's only one sphere where nVidia > ATi, and that's Linux drivers. Frankly, no one cares about Linux. :-)

s/Linux //
ati's windows drivers are almost as bad as their linux drivers.
Code: Select all
uint8_t f(uint8_t n)
{ if (!(
n&1)) return 2;
  if (
n==169) return 13; if (n==121||n==143) return 11;
  if (
n==77||n==91) return 7; if (n==3||n==5) return 0;

n=(n>>4)+(n&0xF); n+=n>>4n&=0xF;
  return (
n==3||n==6||n==9||n==12||n==15)?3:(n==5||n==10)?5:0; }

ATI, has never given me an issue i cannot resolve. Nvidia in the other hand... :roll: i still resolve the issues but takes a bit longer lol...

i vote ATI, have always used ATI in my personal computers, although i do have computers with Nvidia in my home. But i mainly follow a principle, ATI with AMD,and Intel with Nvidia.

ATI here, but that may be more down to my natural bias towards underdogs in general.

nVidia because green is best.

But red ones go faster... hmm... quite the conundrum.

Yeah I know nVidia have better Linux drivers, but that's pretty much the ONLY thing they do better than ATI. Oh, that and slapping "nVidia The Way It's Meant To Be Played" on every game ever.

Well now. The only nvidia card I ever bought is also the only one that's ever blown up on me.

Plus, seeing that infernal goddamn "the way it's meant to be played" badge in the intro of EVERY GAME EVER, SERIOUSLY ALL OF THEM when you're a young man who just proudly purchased a Radeon...

That shit leaves a mark, y'know?

"the way it's meant to be played" - nvidia

Nvidia, they've always worked well for me (I've had a Riva TNT2, Geforce 2, 7600GS and now a 9800GTX+), and Linux support has always been great (I've heard bad things about ATI + Linux...). Though my one ATI card (a Radeon 9600Pro) did perform just fine for the year or two I used it (never used Linux on that machine when it had that chip in it though).

Plus in my 3d graphics experiences ATI has always had some weird issues with OpenGL and shaders and such.

last i checked, ATI drivers were easier in linux that nvidia counterparts...

That's the exact opposite of everything I've ever heard on the subject.

ATI. More bang for the buck. Although for Linux I've always had a soft spot for Intel graphics :p Yes I'm lazy like that...

Apparently Apple is agnostic about graphics cards. They now use ATI for their desktops and nVidia for their notebooks.

Shit yeah! When I order my Mac Pro, I will FINALLY have an ATI box. All this Nvidia garbage of bad packaging and pretending 2008 tech is 2010 tech. Little apprehensive about GPGPU performance though...

Also, ATI's Mac drivers are almost always better, since AMD does them themselves, instead of just dumping some specs on Apple the way Nvidia does. (3870 > 8800GT under OS X. Also, 4870 > GTX 285)

Do you know if ATI is more power efficient for use on laptops? I also wonder how good the 3rd party chipmakers are http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graphics_p ... _companies

Based on the current state of the two companies cards... I'd think the opposite would make more sense. But whatever!
