Umbrella Academy

Postby Decker » Sat Jun 19, 2010 7:19 pm UTC

I just picked up the first volume of this series, called Apocalypse Suite, and I have to say I like it a lot. It's a satire of many super-hero team stories, but it's very dark humor and it's not something that I've really seen before. The art style is exaggerated and angular, but it suits the atmosphere of the book. Has anyone else read this?

Also note, that it's written by Gerard Way of the band My Chemical Romance.

I was angry with my foe. I told it not. My wrath did grow.

Yeah, we got it for our teen section, and I was very impressed with it. It's delightfully odd.

I wanna read it, but the fact it's written by Gerard Way is kinda putting me off.

I know it's childish and stupid, but then again, so is My Chemical Romance.

The way I hear it is that the world would be a better place if he stuck to writing comic books. I haven't read this, but hear good things and want to check it out.

I also read the Umbrella Academy.

It's pretty good although lacking in... resolution. Lots of unanswered questions and the like.

Well, the second volume just came out and according to my comics-obsessed friend, it's just as awesome as the first.

I do like Umbrella Academy a lot.
Spoiler:
I can't believe #7 just up and killed Dr. Pogo - complete with half-page illustration of his brain exploding - that was the one moment that gave me pause.

I loooooove the art style. It's so alive. Combined with the story and dialogue, it just crackles off the page.

It actually came out last September. It was just as wacky as the first book but I didn't enjoy it as much as the first one.
Spoiler:
"Who Killed Kennedy" just seems so overdone as a concept that I just couldn't enjoy the book. Also, since the majority of the focus was on Future Boy, the other characters were seen less in the second book than they were in the first.

My local comic shop's manager had both volumes 1 and 2 as a book club selection last year. He had printed out an interview with Gerard Way where Way had indicated he would do several more volumes, with each volume focusing on a different member. If that does happen, it would undo some of my issues with the second volume.
