Scott Pilgrim Vs The world (the movie or the comic)

Postby Jessica » Fri Mar 26, 2010 2:49 am UTC

Trailer released today.

So, my friend is a major fan of this comic, and so when I heard the trailer came out today I checked it out.

Looks pretty fucking cool. I would love someone other than Michael Cera, as he's kind of used up, but whatever.

reading the comic now, and if this trailer is any indication, this is going to be one of the best comic book to movie transitions ever. Like it's very accurate (as in there are scenes from the comic book pulled directly. EG: the scene where Scott is thrown into a castle? In the book [also note: that's actually Casa Loma which is pretty cool too.])

Any thoughts? about the comic or the movie, you know either...

I am effing in love with this comic!! It's crazeeeh.
I believe in Edgar Wright's ability to turn this movie into a classic and if the trailer is any indication, he probably will!

I've never read the comic, but after seeing the trailer yesterday, I can easily say I want to be in the theater day 1. This does look like almost like No More Heroes: The Movie (minus the crude humor). I think it's the style of the whole thing that has me won over. I really want to read the comics now and see how it is.

I'm looking forward to the movie and the last book, although I'm not 100% certain that Michael Cera can really pull off the character. Scott has a level of bravado and, I want to say, confidence that Cera has never really shown. Not to say he can't, but he's certainly been typecast into a pretty specific role.

Agreed with Mike, with respect to Michael Cera. Comicy question: Volume 6 is not out yet, right? And how many volumes are there going to be in total? One would think at least seven.

Volume 6 will be the last volume. I heard that the movie and comics would have different endings ergo, a different set of experiences for the viewers/readers. I CANNOT WAIT.

Anyway, I'm excited. A friend of mine who never read the comics found the trailer independently and thought it was awesome. I immediately lent him my Scott Pilgrim so he could know what he was getting into.

Yeah, vol. 6 is out in July and will be the last volume. O'Malley's said that the movie doesn't have any content from it, which makes sense since the script was apparently more or less done when vol. 5 was still a barebones script at most.

Never heard of this until I saw the trailer right now. Seems really cool! Just a few questions though:
- Why exactly does he agree to fight her exes (ex's?)? Why doesn't he just go 'Ah, screw this!'
- This is a cartoon world where you can slammed into a wall without seriously injuring yourself?

Yes. It is a comic-book world with heavy video-game influence.

Because he really likes Ramona Flowers. It's a story of love, really albeit on the insane part of it. :P

ArgonV wrote:- This is a cartoon world where you can slammed into a wall without seriously injuring yourself?

Apparently so. hehe. The comics is really goofy and cartoony and has a whole video game vibe to it. It's kind of corny too but Bryan O'Malley really pulls it off and everything comes out hilarious.

You should read the comics! It's awesome.

Uh, it probably depends on location. It is in the US on Amazon.

As for the world of the comic/world: yeah, it's essentially a cartoony video game world. Amongst other things, Scott gains experience points as the books move along (there's no counter or anything), finds a save point, and gets a 1-up shaped like his face. Though, to be fair, in many cases he doesn't actually know what they are at first. He tends to get hurt from things like getting slammed through a wall, but not much more than you would from falling down.

If you've ever seen "spaced" you know damn well how good this film will be. I half wonder if Brian Lee O'malley wasn't inspired by spaced by some degree while doing scott pilgrim. How weird is that?

I'm only just now looking through the online previews, and I picked one up once in the comic book store. I definitely like the look of the comic book action violence in the movie.

Necro time! Less than a month until the film comes out, and I'm excited.

I think I first heard about Scott Pilgrim as a reference on TV Tropes, then I saw the game (in its current semi-complete state) at a convention, then saw the trailer, and am now reading through the books (up to #4). I am loving it so far, really looking forward to both finishing the comic and seeing the film. I particularly love how the geeky references range from the obvious to the obscure, both in content and presentation. For example, the Sonic-style splash page at the start of volume 4 compared to the Parappa the Rapper quote in either 2 or 3. I assume I've missed about half the references that are there, and once I finish reading it I'll have to look for some kind of reading guide to explain them to me.

And by now, the sixth and final volume is out. Read it, and still unsure about what I really think of the ending. Vol. 6 is not as good as the others, but overall it's still a damn good comic.

Yes.

...Matthew descends upon the stage and engages Scott in a video game-style duel. He is revealed as one of Ramona's evil ex-boyfriends, and has mystical powers that allow him to summon "demon hipster chicks". Scott prevails, his final attack obliterating Matthew and leaving behind a handful of coins. On the subway home, Scott and Ramona decide to become a couple, on the proviso that Scott agree to defeat her other evil-exboyfriends.

I really enjoyed volume 6, the first chapter especially made me laugh a lot -
Spoiler:
first appearance of the memory cam, Scott mistaking someone for Gideon again, and his feeble attempt to proposition Knives.

Very well done ending, only criticism - not enough Kim :( - and Shatterband is nowhere near as good a band name as Sex Bob-Omb!

I didn't get the Shatterband name until a couple days later when someone on a forum mentioned the NES game Shatterhand. I had never heard of it. (And no, it's not as good a name.)

I've not read them, but my [ex] step brother is in love with them, and he's taking me to a midnight showing. It looks really really awesome. I have read the tropes page after months of him talking about the books, and I have to admit it makes a ton more sense now (nonsensical sense, but sense nonetheless). I have a feeling that I'm really going to hate Ramona, really going to love Knives and Kim, and be ambivalent to Wallace Wells and Steven Stills. I don't know if I'm going to like Scott or not.

I've never read much of the comic, it looked fun and all but I've been spending my money on Red Robin comics and whatever. I think it'll be cool, like kick-ass. The only problem with most comic book movies is that either the comic fans love it for it's accuracy or everyone else likes it but it annoys comic fans (like Watchmen or Spiderman).

I just find it hard to believe that little actor can fight, but it's goofy and I still wanna see it.

I've never met a comic fan who disliked the first two Spider-Man movies. The third one is pretty universally reviled. Hell, I've hardly met anyone who LIKED Watchmen. That said, I'm curious to see how general audiences respond to this (assuming it is like the comic, which the trailers have suggested that it is - very much so). I've got a tentative date to see it, so I may get to see that reaction second-hand!

I liked the first spider-man but the other 2 made him an unfunny emo twat and then the comic book started copying and making spider-man an unfunny emo character. I never care about any accuracy or whatever but when the comic book starts trying to be the movie it's weird. Every comic book guy I knew had high hopes that watchmen would be the best thing ever, and they all loved how accurate and well done it was but god it just wasn't the kind of thing to be sold as a movie.

As somebody who doesn't read a lot of comics but who tends to be all for comic-book movies, what I've seen so far seems pretty cool...except for Michael Cera.

This movie needs somebody way shinier than that.

Spider-Man 2 was easily the best Spider-Man film. Also, I have three films lined up to see.

Karate Kid
Expendables
Scott Pilgrim.

I am looking forward to Scott Pilgrim almost as much as The Expendables, which is pretty badass.
