I don't want Forum Games in my "New Posts" list

Postby joeframbach » Fri Aug 13, 2010 7:56 pm UTC

Can I be banned from FG, or can the "Banned from FG" usergroup be publicly accessible?
That would be great.

I have two concerns:
A) I don't believe the desire stated in the thread title will be achieved via the request you've made.
B) No Banned from FG group currently exists.

I've banned you from N&A as an experiment. If new posts stop appearing, we've cleared up A). If not, you're out of luck and we won't have to bother Hammer or Hodge with creating B).

That's not in my toolbox. -Hodge.

It would probably work if he were prevented from seeing FG entirely, assuming that anyone were to bother.

Yeah, if you've lost permissions for a particular forum, posts there aren't going to show up for you any more.
Unless stated otherwise, I do not care whether a statement, by itself, constitutes a persuasive political argument. I care whether it's true.

You could always just bookmark these two links
This one marks the FG-topics as read
This one marks the FG-subfora (Mafia) as read
and just open them before going to New Posts.

Those links don't work permanently. See the part that says hash? That changes, depending on I'm not sure what.

When you begin a session on the forums, a random seed and the system timestamp in microseconds are concatenated and run through MD5. Starting with the fifth character, 16 characters of this hex value are stored in the database row for your account. When you load a page with a "Mark topics read" link, that string is run through SHA-1 and the first eight characters are inserted in the target URL.

When you click the link, the server verifies that the hash value is valid for that particular user's session before it marks topics as read. This prevents people from causing you to post messages like "HAHAHA DISREGARD THAT, I SUCK COCKS" by leaving around links similar to the one in that post.

I didn't notice that. And I had wondered why those links weren't abused as troll-tool.

Anyway, scratch what I said before.
Go to viewforum.php?f=14 and click on Mark Fora as Read and Mark Topics as Read before going to New Posts.

I can still see N&A posts in "new posts", but I can't reply or create a new thread.
The "mark as read" workaround works fine. Thank you much!

Oh -- Can I be unbanned from N&A please?
