Now get your formatting right and you'll be the official thread!

I didn't really see the point in this one. Considering it was up late, I think Randall just put it up as last minute filler.

Hopefully, this means he's making a really epic one, and not just being lazy...

Surprised there haven't been any minecraft comics yet.

This comic is both.

Some of those data points are misleading as fuck. For example, there's exactly one hit for "evanescent as shit" and two for "fucking evanescent."

Also, is "disgusting as shit" asterisked?

Negatory. A few comics have been up late. One by several hours. This is no more than an hour late, therefore not the most late, nor the first late comic.

On topic: I love these type of comics, except for the fact their data is accurate up until the time of posting. I look forward to seeing these stats in a year after echochamberians have sufficent time to skew the results.

Hi Joee. You are evanescent as shit today!

Context:

Indicate the way to my abode
I'm fatigued and I want to repose
Oh, I had a minuscule beverage 60 minutes ago
And it's gone right to my cranium
Wherever I may perambulate, on land or sea or evanescent vapours
You will always hear me harmonising this old melody
Indicate the way to my abode

To the tune of "Show me the way to go home":

Yes, but I must deduct one internets because you misspelled "pigeon" even though it was spelled correctly in the comic.

Hahaha, best comic since... I don't know, September 7 maybe?

Anyway, they've been below average lately, but this one is fucking peristeronic as shit.

In other news, I've decided that "fucking peristeronic as shit" is my new favorite way to say "awesome."

Postby FCN » Mon Sep 27, 2010 5:24 am UTC

WTF is up with people releasing doves at their wedding? They act like doves are these wonderful pure symbols but they're peristeronic as shit. You just put some white feathers on those fucking air rats and people can't wait to get shat upon. Sorry, but if that's your idea of romance then you're jejune as shit.

I probably use the word retarded with the the most, except Randall probably wanted to stay PC. Bored pissed and stupid I seem to use with frequency, although not annoying surprisingly.

i find it hard to believe that "as shit" in "delicious as shit" is used as an intensifier, rather than litterally.

I'm surprised by how far to the right "sexy as shit" is. I would never use that phrase, I would just say "homely as shit" or "ugly as shit".

EDIT: ^^^ Really? I didn't even see that message when I submitted mine...

So no one has ever pointed out that the music of Iannis Xenakis is stochastic as shit? It's so fucking stochastic he probably could've used this comic as the basis for a choral piece.

If you look at the scale you'll notice that they're graphed relative to the amount of times the standalone adjective appears and then natural logged so that points on the left are waaaaay less common than the points on the right. I checked four or five points and they all seem to be plotted in the proper place.

I will be quietly chuckling all day over "piquant as shit". Still trying to work out what "fungible" means, but I am assured that, when I do, it will be funny.

Also, this thread now contains so many swear words that it's banned in Australia.

Fungible means that any two of the commodity are interchangeable.
For instance, oil is fungible - oil is oil is oil, and if I'm buying oil I don't care which particular unit I get.
However, tractors are not fungible because they have age/wear/different models/etc

Also, not banned in Australia yet.

According to wiktionary, it's an adjective in French as well. With the same meaning.

Also, to satisfy my own curiosity, I present the following numbers:
"fucking fucking": 209,000 results
"fucking as shit": 327 results
"fucking": 89,100,000 results
giving "fucking" a red phi of -6 and a blue phi of -12.5

"fucking shit": 902,000 results
"shit as shit": 8,140 results
"shit": 94,100,000
red phi: -4.7, blue phi: -9.4

To be fussy, it's really two words in French: "à propos".

But yes, it does have the same meaning: apposite, well-timed.

Try to find the greatest ratio for ϕ/ϕ

Author found "annoying" with a ratio of : 249000/155000 = 1.60645161 *

"Sure" gives a ratio of: 2440000/28300 = 86.2190813 *

Can anyone do better?

Substituting the british spelling to shite appears to add about 10% to those results. Don't be so fucking xenophobic.

"fucking xenophobic" About 683 results.
"xenophobic as shit" 2 results.
No results found for "xenophobic as shite".

"annoying as shit" About 247,000 results
"annoying as shite" About 2,840 results (0.48 seconds)

Not knowing the word, I googled "define peristeronic", so I now have a new word in my vocabulary. I also noticed that google said "About 4,900 results". Out of curiosity I removed the "define" and hit Return. It said "About 8,790 results".

So more than half the online uses of "peristeronic" are definitions, and there are only about 3,900 actual uses of the word. This suggests another rating metric that could be used in an xkcd comic: the ratio of the uses of a word to the number of definitions. Perhaps the latter count could also include questions about what the word means, its etymology, etc.

I wonder, is there a word meaning "a word that's defined (or discussed) more often than it's used"?

We might note that this message doesn't actually use "peristeronic" at all. All of the instances of "peristeronic" here are me writing about the word itself, including that one in the quoted passage. So I've added materially to the non-usage instances of "peristeronic" but I haven't added to its use count.
