Censoring the Trailers with CGI (and sometimes the film!)

Postby Christo » Sat Jul 03, 2010 1:10 pm UTC

I was watching trailers this morning and watched two back-to-back for Clooney's new movie, The American. The trailers were fairly similar, but one of the differences was pretty weird. Check these out, and note that the differences were in the trailers; I didn't photoshop them or anything.

It seems pretty clear to me that they CGIed her swimsuit away in the second one, right? I wonder if that's a common practice for trailers. I wonder which way it is in the movie. Is that weird to anyone else? Maybe the weird part to me is that I caught it.

By the way, if you doubt me, you can check out the trailers yourself here.

Or they may have CGI'ed her top on the 1st one. Maybe one of the trailers is supposed to be played with R-rated movies and the other is to be played with PG-13 and lower movies.

Could be that, or the top trailer was meant for television release (aired on TV), and the bottom would be in theaters. Usually, though, they wouldn't show trailers for R-rated films in a theater set to feature a PG-13 or lower-rated film. Usually they'd show trailers that were for films of the same ratings, or appeal to the same audience, regardless of which movie studio made it. It wouldn't be at all surprising to see trailers for a Dreamworks movie in a theater where the latest Disney release is being featured. This movie's trailer would be shown in the same theater that was showing "Knight and Day", not "Despicable Me" or "Shrek The Final Chapter".

CG'ed to make it less interesting? Hmm... kind of like the Matrix sequels.

I hear you on different trailers for different audiences, but are you not allowed to show the topless one? I mean, her back's to the camera, right? I'm not saying you're wrong, I just think it's funny to imagine someone saying, "All right, let's make it look like she's wearing clothes so that people who are thirteen will be more interested." Or the converse, if she's actually wearing a top in the movie, it's weird to think of them making it look spicier than it is. You know?

You mean because it's so obvious? I mean, who's more American than George Clooney? Yeah, descriptive titling can be problematic, as we learned with one of Clooney's other movies.

Saw this yesterday. First, she's topless in that scene (and there's full frontal nudity of her in the movie). Second, this movie is incredibly boring.

It's boring, but I found it intriguing. The fact that he is under a constant threat of assassination is present at all times and all of the actors do well in their respective parts. That, and the scenery was HOLY SHIT GORGEOUS.

Or maybe it was the constant nudity. That was awesome.

Everyone enjoys different films for different reasons.

I loved the film, a fantastic piece of atmosphere and tension. A character study of both Clooney and his social, professional environments.

Ask the people who made Vampires vs Zombies about how they could fuck that one up too. Probably by a shitty plot, apathetic delivery and visibly bored actors.

... also, while I'm sure people of all sexualities can appreciate a well-formed human, do keep in mind that people have different tastes, even among a shared sexuality. Some men prefer blonds, while others brunette, others red, and still others colors that are not possible without the help of chemical alterations. But when reading someone's assessment of an overall shitty performance in which an attractive female character is nude, try not to act surprised when a gay male expresses his boredom.

Well, they did it again with the Your Highness trailer. In this trailer Natalie Portman's in a thong: http://www.hitfix.com/blogs/motion-captured/posts/watch-your-highness-trailer-bad-behavior-danny-mcbride-natalie-portman-in-a-thong

In this one a more traditional swimsuit: http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/universal/yourhighness/

What I find disturbing here is that the swimsuit one looks more genuine, which means the butt we're looking at in the thong version is probably just CGI or something. That's just weird to me.

This is what you're trying to show.

Quicktime's just a program that plays movies.

That's a cool find about Fighter. So, in "Your Highness" which one's the real shot?

Also, bad choice of screenshot. In the movie, Amy Adams is wearing like a string bikini type thing, in the trailer, they're those boy shorts, or whatever they're called. Granny panties? Point is, her tummy is showing more in the movie.

Makes sense to do it, I've noticed some trailers being rated speerately nowadays, so that they can be shown before 15 rated films.

Here's more on a related subject. Katy Perry's Rolling Stone cover and how it was photoshopped: http://i.imgur.com/8UbtV.gif

Note the difference in her breasts, belly skin, right hand, and right sock.

Anyone notice any other differences?

If we're going to document every time a photo is altered for a magazine cover, this could end up being a very long thread.

I usually don't notice these things, being pretty ignorant about correct body proportions. Like, I never notice if someone has a big head or whatever unless someone explicitely points it out. But even though, when I saw this cover at a magazine rack...I was confused as to why a body snatching alien invaded the head of that poor young boy.

That's actually not all that terrible. You may also want to read this. Or look at the people in this guy's portfolio. And airbrushing is old as hell too. Pretty much, if you've seen a picture in a magazine and it wasn't a tabloid trying to make the person look like crap, it's been photoshopped to hell.
