The band The Wild just put out a new album that I've been loving for the last couple of weeks. I'd describe their music as folk/punk, it's all pretty happy, optimistic stuff. They kind of remind me of an early Against Me! but less angry. The best part though is they operate under Quote Unquote records which is a donation based label that puts out all of its albums for free, so you can download it here and not feel guilty about stealing their music. They also have a donation link on that page if you feel like it.

I recommend Jethro Tull (That's the band, not a musician). Tull is a superb band that's been around since 1967, under foreman Ian Anderson. I believe that Jethro Tull should be far better known than they seem to be. Most aficionados of classic rock will know them, at least by their classics such as "Aqualung" and "Thick as a Brick". But if they'd slipped under your radar, you have to check them out. It's really hard to select a few example songs, because they've not only been playing for 40+ years, but they've been changing for 40+ years, going from blues to rock to folk to jazz and everything in between. There will be something in their discography that you will like, and you will never hear flute rock this awesome anywhere else.

I know this band has been mentioned before in this thread twice, but DREAM THEATER is the band of the decade. This band has the ability to play hard, heavy, and technical. After your jaw has dropped from perfected technicalities, they also have the ability to slow things down and show the band's melodic side. True musicianship going on here. Something you just don't see in today's bands that's for sure.

I really like Shinedown. Brent Smith has a really rock solid voice. The only thing that bugs me about Shinedown is that their lyrics can be really awkward and clumsy sometimes.

The Megas, an awesome indie rock band that composes songs based off the soundtrack of Megaman (Mostly Megaman 2). It sounds like a parody at first, but they really are a great band.

The one artist I would recommend whole heartedly would be Disturbed.

I actually came across Disturbed from listening to a compilation, and the song of theirs really caught my attention, "Shout 2000". Despite it actually being a cover for another band "Tears for Fears" I really like his singing voice.

They're an American rock band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 1996. They have sold over 11 million albums worldwide.

first off thanks to whoever recommended Volto do Mar on the first page - i love their sound - have been wondering how two bass guitars would sound together for a while.
and thanks to the recommender of Tycho - has a similar sort of vibe to Boards of Canada - also worth checking out Leftfield ('swords', in particular) if you don't know them already.

My recommendation is Ray Hargreaves, aka Raybob industries. A fantastic artist who recently released his latest album, Hey Girl Hey. He's also created Jessica and the Silver Eclips, Pixel Vision, and Proto a Gogo (the latter two are now free to download, btw).

I'm going to suggest Streetlight Manifesto. They're a Ska band, but they sound different from any other Ska band I've ever heard, and their lyrics are actually very interesting.

If you like them, or ska in general, I'd highly recommend Catch 22, another ska band with some of the same members (I think there's kinda a thorny relationship between the bands, actually). Catch 22 has created one of the best concept albums I've ever experienced called "Permanent Revolution", about the life of Leon Trotsky. Each song represents a significant year (or event) in his life, so the album is like a musical biography (one of a truly fascinating individual at that!)

My own suggestion is Sage Francis, who's already been mentioned, but I think is worth a re-mention. He's an underground/independent hip-hop artist and former slam poet, and his poetic background is evident is his songs. I chose three songs to kind of give an idea of his different styles.

My favourite band of all time are The Clash. However, because punk's not for everyone (even punk that dabbled in American folk, reggae, pop, rap and the general "misc" drawer of rock, I found much to my disappointment) I'm going to reccomend Canned Heat. They're pretty damn excllent and I've only ever met one person who doesn't like them.
Right, I know, these aren't particularly obscure bands, but they should be listened to all the same!

EDIT: OK, I noticed lotsa people reccomending multiple bands and tracks. So I edited in my (current) favourite Clash songs, cleverly into the genres they come under... You should still check out Canned Heat though
