Given Vandole's comment, I guess no one here has every seen this form of sarcasm on this bbs before. The theory is that when someone quotes you it, the grey text shows up against the white background of the quote, but apparently it doesn't work as well with the color scheme here as other BBSs. It would have worked better if I ended up in a dark gray box.

Regardless, you should all be ashamed given the topic of this thread.

It wouldn't work. Similar marks have been proposed for Irony (in French, point d'ironie). It's basically a backwards/cursive question mark: ؟ (if it displays for any of you).

My favorite extra glyph is the interobang -- a combination of ? and ! on top of each other: "She said that‽"

I love the interrobang but the shebang (#!) is better, just for the name.

More ontopic, I post AC on slashdot (Anonymous Coward, which is what it sounds like - anonymous, non-registered posting) because I've been too lazy to register and honestly the site is mostly sensationalized headlines and summaries, and more than half of the comments are either RTFA or by people who need to RTFA. I still read the news and skim comments for the intelligent ones (the mod system isn't great but it generally works out ok) because it has good bits, but I don't feel the need to post often enough to justify making an account.

Besides which, I'm not a karma whore >.>

This is the best xkcd, ever, by far.

Also you xkcd elistists who hate slashdot, I have some words in its defense.
We know that it's ridiculously biased. We know that the comment system is so messed up. Why do you think we still use slashdot? It's so much more entertaining to read all the slashcrap and immerse yourself in the environment of thousands of varienties of memes and trolls than to actually just get the news.

don't you get it? It's hilarious! Abusing the tag system only to realize that enough other slashdotters thought of the exact same joke that it's now one of the front page tags. Page-long diatribes that throw all logic to the wind in a self-deprecatingly ferocious defense of your favorite text editor- totally unrelated to the news topic, but totally related to the parent so it's OK. Modding an obviously sarcastic comment insightful and getting laffs from people who notice. Slashdot is the only place on the entire internet where this type of intellectual humor is appreciated. (OK yes xkcd is the ark of all intellectual humor but it's not exactly user driven, the author is the only one who has any fun around here). We get it. We know it's bad because we make it bad. On purpose. Have fun on your little 16-thousand user forum making fun of slashdot, cause slashdot could squash you like a bug.

It doesn't fit at all, and anyway this Council guy is an idiot, I've seen deadpan "There are no such possibilities..."-like comments get rave moderation. Especially when mods have points burning a hole in their accounts and there are no interesting debates going on.

Early today I saw this comic. Not quite sure what it meant 'cause I don't do slashdot.

Midday the family has on "What Not to Wear" on TLC which is interspersed with commercials for other shows on plastic surgery and makeovers. Makes me think of public daytime TV like Maury, and the infamous blog entry of Maury's blooper.

Combine the two:

When a chick is a guy
Hits you right in the eye
That's A-Maury.

Go look up all the idiotic / troll comments on "Maury's Blooper". Hopefully it still exists somewhere. Shudder at how long the comments went on through. As it continues, though, I am more confident that it becomes its own joke.

Well yeah - because I post AC. By definition I can't have any!

But I've yet to have a post modded negative, they all either sit at 0 or go to 2 or 3. So I theoretically *would* be slowly but surely getting karma.

You know. If I cared or was a Karma whore.

alt text is so amazingly true.
I use youtube mainly to listen to music via music videos, and I hate how the commenters...
I especially hate it when they misunderstand the song and hate the band for it. (That happened mainly on Smells Like Nirvana (apparently Weird Al hates Nirvana) and on Rammstein's Amerika (Apparently Rammstein hates America...)

I forget who it is, but someone's sig says, "There are no karma whores. Only moderation Johns."

Fortunately, it looks like now the "Redundant" mod actually gets used on a lot of repeating-the-same-old-talking-points posts.

First poster...

I love this comic. Partly because for several months now, my hobby has been that, for almost every YouTube video I see, I post the comment: "TOTALLY FAKE. You people are IDIOTS."

I like putting this on everything from videos of kittens playing with bunnies, to music videos, to the State of the Union Address.

Keep modding to plus five (insightful).

Traditional slashdot views would be something like "Open Source/Linux Rocks; Microsoft is Evil(tm); Google can do no wrong".

The character agrees with these views but sarcastically posts something like "Google is slowly but surely turning evil, and Windows Vista is actually pretty secure".

The 'iconoclasts' of /. who happen to have mod points tend to mod up these comments, vexing the character who actually wanted to be modded Troll. (This is reinforced by the alt text, which shows that the character was trying this on YouTube as well.)

Dude this movie and song is retarded I actually am amish and if u dudes actually tried it you would realize that life actually is more awesome without like electronics and stuff. Weird als an idiot.

On the video clip for Weird Al's Amish Paradise. I was trying to sound authentic, but it really is hard for me to manage to write like that. I get a few replies, people actually did notice the fallacy, eventually.

So I post a followup:

Dude, youse guys r all frickin idiots u eva heard of an analog computer, no?? if u actually met amish people instead of being stuck in ur own biaz then u'd understand stuf like that so why don't use all stfu and stop harassing me

And am waiting on replies.
