As far as I'm aware this hasn't been done before, someone please correct me if i'm wrong.

So anyway, let's find out what xkcd's favourite books are. you can each vote for up to 20 books, you do not need to put them in order, every book you vote for will each get 1 point. this seems the better way to go, as popularity is perhaps a better indication than a few xkcdians having something as their favourite book, but no one else caring for it.
Please put the title of the book AND the author.

Also if you talk to other xkcd peeps who don't browse the books subforum tell them to get their asses overhere.

Deed of Paksennarion is the name of the series - the individual books are called 'Sheepfarmers Daughter', 'Divided Allegiance' and 'Oath of Gold', although you could expand that to include the two Gird/Luap books ('Surrender None' and 'Liar's Oath') and the new books ('Oath of Fealty', 'Kings of the North', and the as yet untitled 3rd-5th books in the new series).

The Serrano/Suiza books are probably best called the 'Familias Regnant' series. That's how Wikipedia groups them, anyway.

Here's the thing with grouping series, though: I loved Ender's Game, liked Speaker for the Dead, did not like Xenocide or Children of the Mind, and haven't even read the Bean books. So it seems odd that, for example, my vote for Ender's Game should count as a vote for the whole series.

On the other hand, since the OP did suggest counting series as single items, maybe that means one should not vote for a book that is part of a series unless one has read and enjoyed the whole series. However, that would seem to unfairly punish good books for having poor sequels.

Also, there's considerable ambiguity in what constitutes a series. As one example, people have (so far) counted The Hobbit, the Silmarillion, and The Lord of the Rings separately, although LotR is a sequel to The Hobbit and a sequel of sorts to the Silmarillion as well (LotR itself is not a series, but a single novel published in three volumes for reasons of practicality). As another, one isn't sure whether to consider Asimov's Robot series and Foundation series separately or to treat them as a single Robot-Foundation series, since they were linked together in the later books (and again, I'd guess that many people who would vote for the Foundation series haven't read the Robot series).

If people haven't said they were part of a series, I haven't put them up as series, because I don't knooooow.

But after googling, the book by Eoin Colfer listed in our list of lists is The Wish List, which is according to Wikipedia, a standalone novel.

Let me know if there are more series, I'm unaware of though.

I actually meant that as Colfer wrote And Another Thing which is considered canon, and part of the Hitchhiker continuity, he should be considered one of the writers of the The Hitchhiker's Guide series.

Hmm, this is a difficult case. It is considered to be the next book in the series, so I think that is more important than the author. I'll put it under the Hichhiker's Guide, with a little note saying the book is included when somebody will vote for it. Agree?

I hate to be a downer on this, and I love Eoin Colfer as a writer, but i just didn't like And Another Thing as a part of the series.
I felt it didn't fit too well with what Adams created, it just seemed forced and awkward.

Alright, I'll count And another thing as a different book but that's the final version. It's a difficult case, with the different authors and all but we'll leave it to this.

Personally, I do like the entire series and would vote for it as a series. I actually think some of the Shadow books are up there with Ender's Game in terms of quality. I agree Children of the Mind and Xenocide (and to a lesser extent Speaker for the Dead) aren't quite as good, but the series as a whole is, imo.

i think this is a good thing to go with.

the series thing is such a difficult thing to deal with and perhaps need to be dealt with on a case by case basis. people generally don't refer to individual LotR and HP books, but Ender's game is more refered to than the series.
