And this.

These are funny. They're not trolls. They're people finding humor in a crappy situation. Come on. If you didn't think they were funny, that's ok, but the obvious intent was dry wit.

Hope everything works out ok Randall. Three out of every seven of my days (and sometimes more) are brightened by you.

It's nice to see the forum pulling together to support the comic and its designer instead of tearing him a new one because of a comic they didn't agree with. Nice change of pace.

Hope all goes well for you Randall, though I doubt you'll ever read this :-P

Hi - long time reader, though I've never felt any need to post before. I hope whichever member of your family it is recovers soon. Like many here I've experienced serious family illness. I can't think of much else to say that doesn't sound like a platitude so please just count this message among the general tide of goodwill I think the majority of your readers feel for you.

All the best and thanks for the comics.
Kind regards,
Y

"just isn't enough" would be a good line to end that strip too. That's a good one. And the type that I will mostly miss from Randal. Perhaps he could do a Calvin and Hobbs. I believe that strip keeps it's value because it's a finished entity now. It did not draw on like Garfield (although I think Garfield is just replaying the same strips as all the rest).

PS, hope all is well Rands. You've got a lot of people here thinking of you.

Best wishes to you and your family.

Suggestion: Instead of flash games you could distract yourself trying to prove the Riemann hypothesis. I suspect that more than a few mathematicians have lost more hours than they care to admit to that pursuit. Of course, if physics is more where your mind is at these days, there's always the unified field theory out there. If it was good enough for Einstein to waste his time on... ;)

I swear I'm not sticking to cynicism here, but is it really necessary for Randall to insist in sticking to a strict schedule in a time like this? Wouldn't it be better for him to just loosen it up and only post things he feel are worth posting? Is there such a great number of rabid fans that would die or go insane if Randall didn't update every monday, wednesday and friday?

Sheesh! Randall, man, if you're reading this, believe when I say I'm speaking with the best intent. Leave all the harsh criticism aside for a moment. Do you really to keep this up? You've made your situation very clear, and I'm sure people would understand even if you had to take a break for a while. Unless having a strict schedule really makes you feel good, try to change your routine to focus on things that are important.

I won't try to act all personal and intimate, because I don't know you, I don't know your family and trying to be "comforting" would creep me out. Just don't let that webcomic become bigger than you.

Best wishes; I certainly won't holler if there is no comic from time-to-time.

If I understand correctly that Randall is living somewhere around Boston, perhaps the relative is being treated nearby. There are some really incredible hospitals and specialists in that area who have done very well by my in-laws.

It reads to me that Randy is sticking to a strict "Don't do shit" schedule, and having davean upload whatever the crap he wants.

Also, webcomicing is like working out - even when you take a break, you have to keep up the schedule or you'll never get back into one.

I've enjoyed your comic over the years and have shared it with many, hopefully expanding your readership. Very sorry to hear that you're going through rough times, and can totally sympathize. My wife loves your astronomy and astrophysics comics as she has a PhD in that field and operates a 3.5 meter telescope for a living.

Fall '08 I was taking an algebra class and my hands started bothering me. It got to the point that I couldn't hold a pencil to do my work, had to take an incomplete. Around Thanksgiving I was diagnosed with severe carpal tunnel, 30 years of computer work finally caught up with me. The odd part was that it did not impair my keyboarding, and that's the thing about carpal tunnel: the main symptom is not pain, it's numbness! Forward to February, I get my right wrist operated on. Out of work for 2 weeks, at the end of that I go in and have the stitches removed. 3 days after that I get pneumonia and I'm out of work for another week, then a week at half time, and a couple more weeks recovering. Forward to April, about 10 days before I'm scheduled to get my left wrist worked on. I get pneumonia again. Fortunately it clears and the operation can proceed as scheduled. May: pneumonia again. June: pneumonia again. And at the same time my wife's mother in Maine was dying of small cell lung cancer.

Insanely long story somewhat shortened, I was diagnosed with a primary immune disorder called CVID. Genetic, probably had it all my life, it just kicked in to overdrive last year. The treatment is 4 needles in my abdomen infusing immuneglobin every week for over 2 hours. It takes 1,000 blood donations to make one treatment for me, and if I didn't have insurance, it would cost $10,000 a month. For the rest of my life.

It totally altered my life, but I'm still kicking. I've walked out of yoga class and avoided crowds in public until my wife and I were confident that my immune system was responding to treatment and that I wouldn't get sick at the drop of a hat. We drove from New Mexico to Ohio rather than fly to my MIL's memorial because of my condition.

My sincerest best wishes for your situation to stabilize and improve quickly. Since we don't know what's ailing you, perhaps recovery is not possible, as in my case, and you just have to live with it. Regardless, take as much time as you need, your faithful will be patient until your return. And don't be reluctant to seek professional help from a counselor if things start to become too much, it helped me.

I can kind of relate to this; I have a hard time generating personal goodwill towards people I don't know.

...but I do have a pool of impersonal goodwill that people may help themselves to, so I suppose now that I've posted about it here, Randall and his family can help themselves to its contents (just as long as they leave some in there so that I don't come off like a dick).

Anyhow, yours seems like good advice; keep it up if you have the will and energy to do so, Randall, but if you need a break, don't be afraid to take one. We'll still love you (personally or not).

I interpreted them as such, too, and both grinned and grimaced. However, one needs to be careful with comic irony on the internets, when you can't rely on tone of voice, facial expressions, personal familiarity or cultural context to clarify intent.

If Randall didn't have a schedule, what happened to OOTS would happen to xkcd. As in, update twice a week, then update once a week, then screw it i don't feel like doing an update this week, then a month of no updates, then randomly an update, etc.

I agree that a steady schedule is a good idea by and large, but one needs to be able to deviate from it if one needs a break.

That being said, for all we know, he may prefer to keep it up, anyway, finding comiccrafting relaxing or something.
...and I'm guessing he does indeed have a way of buffering comics, so that he can remain on schedule when vacationing abroad and the like, so he can probably prepare comics (or comic:ish stuff from his journals and the like) when he feels like it and do other stuff when he doesn't.

Have you ever read a comic that had supposedly dedicated itself to a weekly schedule, then had no updates for several weeks without any info posts or anything, and then after all that time came back with a quick "Herp derp sorry guys, we're going on hiatus for a while" post? I can understand that not everyone can maintain their projected update schedule, but that sort of thing is very disappointing. Randall basically just told us "Okay guys I can't reasonably keep up this schedule with new gag-a-day strips because my life's too complicated right now, thankfully though I have plenty of filler content for you."
Posting filler content does not constitute maintaining a schedule, considering that filler content can be posted even while a webcartoonist is not able to be there to produce comics. And don't get me wrong here either; I think filler content is often quite great. Today's message basically is Randall saying that he is going to do what you just told him to do.
I respect that; it is good to know one's own limits, and you seem to know this as well as I do.

I hadn't read the blog, but I had a feeling this might be the case. Our family recently had a very serious health scare, and I (assume that I) understand what Randall might be going through, and concentrating on writing comics is going to be the last of his worries at the moment.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for all involved. Hopefully, all things resolved, he'll be back and better than ever in no time.

Not cool. Not funny. Not a good illness! :p

Also, this is a good flash game site that was made by an engineer who has a penchant for bizarre/intriguing artwork in his games. This game in particular seems appropriate in this case.

Oh, wow...

Haven't visited Randalls blag for a few months until 2 days ago... I read the post he is referring to, and I hoped it's nothing serious.

Then todays comic hit it like a freight train... Randall, I hope your family member gets better.

Sincerely,
the guy whose nick is at the right hand side of this post.

P.S. I hope you like the games we suggested.

EDIT:

@SirMustapha
No one is forcing him to keep the schedule, it is still his own will. As an addicting flash game, drawing and writing - doing something, in general - can be a good way to keep problems that you cannot solve off your mind. Now, I don't know about Randall, but I do believe that he would draw and publish, on and on, even as the reader base approached 0. I don't think he does it because we demand him to do that - he does it because he enjoys it, and then he just shares his creation with the world.
However, there is still a glimpse of doubt there... Randall, if you're updating xkcd only to feed us, please don't. Focus on what is important to you. I believe that the community will always welcome you back, anytime, as soon as you are ready to get back.

You've provided many laughs and thoughts, and I can't thank you enough. It's partly selfish that I wish your family situation to improve. And it's partly because of you and your comics that I wish that for everyone. Thank you. Be that as it may, best of all to you and yours.
