The finale was good but I'm already getting bored of them dangling the Beckett/Castle relationship in front of us. At least now they've both realized they like each other, but they don't realize that the other likes them. Bah.

+1 for the title. I never even thought of that.

The relationship dangling is getting a bit old. Is Joss Whedon secretly writing this show?

Was I the only one that thought that the season finale was a shitshow?

I loved the fact that the characters came to realize their feelings, but the actual plot was pretty poor I thought.

Also there were some pretty gaping story holes...They say early on the killer was a trained assassin and an expert marksmen, but when it turns out to be
Spoiler:
the girls husband they didn't mention the fact he's quite obviously not a trained killer, and it seemed to be a crime of passion if anything...

I believe they mentioned he was in the IRA but that's a real cop-out answer methinks.

Maybe I'm the only one?

I was seriously hoping for an awesome Alexis-is-bisexual plot in honor of National Coming Out Day today. It would have been a bit gimmicky, but no less than "Ashley is a boy" was. I think it would have been awesome.

Other than that, liking the new season a lot. It's been really cool. I like seeing more of Ryan and Esposito.

ETA: Also, that dedication at the end was pure awesomesauce.

I loove Castle. We get it after you 'Mericans, but I spend every Wednesday night watching it with my grandad. I like how they've made the criminals less obvious in this season, since in the previous one I successfully predicted every plot twist about ten minutes into each episode, much to the annoyance of my grandfather.

I've gotten pretty good about nailing the plot twists, but they manage to hide the actual murderer pretty well. Unlike, say, CSI where it's obvious 20 minute in.

They don't just hide the murderer either. They hide the murderer behind layers and layers of the absolute strangest circumstances, and squeeze them for as many great lines as Castle can deliver in a scene.

Oh, dear gods, I didn't get the Chinese reference... I am a failure at all that is life. This hurts me deeply. I did recognize the crazy book author from an episode of X-Files, though. IIRC one or two others in this episode had single-episode X-Files appearances.

Also, Lyle Lovette's mouth looks like it was applied with an ax. And not on a very good swing.

Crazy book author was Lance Henrickson, from such popular movies as Aliens/Alien3/AvP, Terminator, Hard Target, and the series Millenium. Was looking very old though, it took me awhile to convince myself it was him!

Fillion is very good. The show is not that well written and often very cliche' (how the fuck do I type that?) but Fillion makes it very watchable. Honestly, cop shows are so prevalent that one can survive being character driven without the other stuff pretty well.

Yes. I think hendu and I agreed it was one of the best episodes they've had so far. It was hilarious, it demonstrated that they've had excellent character development for Beckett, and there was also character development for Ryan. I really enjoyed Laura Prepon's character (who knew she could play a character that's not Donna from That 70s Show?). Plus of course anything that gets Castle and Beckett closer to getting together earns a huge cheer from us.

Because I have insecurity issues with liking romantic comedies. Somebody who likes romantic comedies usually is overly emotional, illogical, and puts little value in cinematography. Don't blame me, blame most every crappy romantic comedy ever made.

Well... that is the stereotype, yes. But there are some very good romantic comedies out there. Juno and Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist are both pretty good. The trick, I think, is to have something that differentiates it from the stereotypical romantic comedy. Juno has the pregnancy story, and the romance is an aside.

Almost every show that has any romance in it is a romantic comedy. I mean, Firefly is a space western, and yet it's got some of the best comedic material in there of anything. Kaylee and Simon, Mal and Inara, Wash and Zoe.

Castle has a detective show as its backdrop. While not as brilliant as, say, early CSI, it's decent. There are some twists I don't see coming. It's not a guilty pleasure, and you should feel no shame.

Besides, it has Firefly jokes galore. Do you need any other justification for watching?

They broke up, according to the latest episode. I'm pretty sure next week is when it finally happens, given how severe the dangling has become. Also, she did call him her boyfriend the episode prior...

Okay, just did some snooping, and it's all but fucking confirmed.
Spoiler:
CASTLE - "Knockdown" - Old wounds are reopened when the retired lead detective on Beckett's mother's homicide case contacts her with new information, but then is gunned down right in front of Beckett before he can tell her what he knows. The investigation into his death leads back to a decades-old conspiracy that may hold the answer to who was behind Beckett's mother murder and why. With the stakes and emotions running high, Castle and Beckett take their partnership to the next level, on "Castle," MONDAY, JANUARY 24 (10:01-11:00 p.m. ET). Max Martini guest stars. (ABC/ADAM TAYLOR) NATHAN FILLION, STANA KATIC
...And it's official. Trailers for the next episode contain pretty bad spoilers, so try to avoid them if you're getting the show through legitimate services.

Romantic comedies which are also excellent movies:
-His Girl Friday (and basically any screwball comedy from this era--It Happened One Night, Bringing Up Baby, etc.)
-When Harry Met Sally... (funny, moving, and stylistically innovative, to boot)
-High Fidelity (more for men, I'd say)
-Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (more of a romantic dramedy, but there's plenty of humor)
-Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
-Scott Pilgrim versus The World
-Lars and the Real Girl (haha)
-Sideways
-Punch-Drunk Love
-As Good as it Gets
-The American President
-Annie Hall (and many other Woody Allen movies)
-Groundhog Day (one of the best movies ever made)
-Chasing Amy (for that matter, Clerks 2)

And a quick scour around the internet says I've barely touched the surface. Discarding an entire genre as "too emotional" is exceptionally immature.

I have a friend who thought the way you did; I tied him to a chair and made him watch Before Sunset, and now he loves romantic movies. Give it a shot, you might enjoy yourself.

I have seen and loved several movies on that list. As good as it gets was a very good movie, as was when harry met sally. Sideways was interesting though I think I enjoyed Giamatti more than the actual story/romance.

Stepping back a little, I concede the point. However, I would say that the tolerance for poor or even just mediocre acting in a Romantic movie is nill. The acting must be impeccable. All the movies you named feature epic performances by the best actor/actresses of their era.

And Chasing Amy was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Dammit, I specifically thought to myself "no no it's the other one" and changed it. Bah. Yes, the first one. Before Sunrise.

I tend to think of romance movies like romance novels. Most of them are "romance novels", ie., trash designed for empty consumption, indistinguishable from one another, and all uniformly silly/awful. Good ones are in a different category entirely--literature that happens to have a love story in it. Just like I wouldn't shelve "Rebecca" with "Wolfy Passions", I wouldn't put "When Harry met Sally" in the same section as "The Ugly Truth".

Last night's episode was very well done... except for one thing that really bothered me.

It was explicitly stated that Esposito was in the Special Forces. Ryan has certainly been on enough police raids. They get captured by the baddies after getting a flashbang dropped on them. I would be willing to venture that anyone who has been in the special forces would have their gun out long before than flashbang went off.

I realize it was necessary to set up the ending, but it broke my willing suspension of disbelief, just a little.
