He claimed scanner specialist in BETA, essentially, saying he could tell if someone was a mage or antimage, and that EH had neither. On the one hand "the Scanner Specialist", on the other, there have been duplicates on a bunch of roles so far. Being killed certainly lends a lot of weight to his claim, so.

Yes, and only sith deal in absolutes (nevermind that saying that is also an absolute). Based off the facts as I knew them, the fact that I trusted the claims given, and some assumptions about the setup (e.g. no scum medics), it was a perfectly fine strategy. It would've resulted in your lynching, so I can't say I blame you for disagreeing. But, fair enough, we can look at this with hindsight now. If we have two scum, where's the second? EH was scanned as non-magic using by someone who was promptly confirmed as town, meaning there'd have to be 2 scum in this thread, which means they control half the vote as-is. I don't buy that.

2) greenlover makes (... made) a good point: rolecopping dead people is something fakeable. Enough people have claimed their rolename that you could use a few of those and/or make some vague ones up for it to be pretty damn easy.

I never denied that it was potentially fakeable. I said that a) it's much harder to fake than a plain cop, b) almost certain to exist in a game where roles aren't revealed on death and thus very dangerous to fakeclaim, on D1 there's only two corpses, meaning very high odds of a collision (and immediate lynching). Lastly, if I was really "making up some vague [rolenames]", the following had been claimed when I announced Roband's role: medic (directly), scanner specialist (implied), anti-mage (implied), mage (unspecifically x2). What did I post?

Roband was the president of Terrunci Enterprises.

Seems pretty damn specific to me.

3) When you contacted me on D1 and I asked too many questions, you shut down that entire line of conversation in a pretty clever way. It made me feel like you didn't trust me and my first response was to prove that I was trustworthy by talking more and providing more information. Only later, when I was rehashing this game in my head (I'm very bad at falling asleep and mafia games are perfect food for thought during those hours DON'T JUDGE ME), I figured that your unwillingness to be open with me made me focus on proving myself instead of doubting you.
And why would you use your one-shot communication attempt on someone D1 and then not be willing to exchange much? I mean, you already knew everything that was happening in BETA, so it's not like you needed information. Why not wait until a later day, when you could contact a confirmed or nearly-confirmed townie and tell them everything they want to know? If you are town, you want to use that private communication to be able to be more open with each other than in public - you can exchange information that scum shouldn't know.
My back-and-forth messages with everyone else I talked to were characterized by that eagerness to share. It is also why I trust Lataro (when he was still alive), existential_elevator and VectorZero so much - they told me whatever I wanted to know (and I tried to return the favour) and if they are lying scum then they have set up some pretty intricate lies. It would be a lot easier to just send me fewer messages and volunteer less information.

Interesting point, and hilariously if you were trying to convince me you were town in PMs, you actually did a pretty bad job of it. Why?

1. You ignored my stock statement that I didn't want to know anything about you or tell you anything more about myself. I've said the same every time I've had the ability to PM in mafia (e.g. Wizardry V2, where I said it even to two people I was very sure were town). Ignoring that made me think you were trying to prove to me that you were town.
2. When you were scum in Buffy, you were described as being "super townie Mav" and that is also how I'd describe your scum playstyle. Very hard for me to detect, I was very shocked you were scum when lynched. What does expecting "looks very townie = scum" + "appears to be trying to gain my confidence" equal? To me, it says "oh god, she's scum" and that'd be why I clammed up in a hurry.

It isn't going to shed much light, but I might as well add my D5 results:

Briefly, and in the hopes of further discussion, I have two lines of thought.
1. mpolo. It's flimsy, but there are a few things to ponder: wording in flavor ("the" Scanner Specialist) combined with VZ's claim and prompt death to confirm towniness, pings/lack of useful info where VZ said nothing of the sort (he never even mentioned magic usage detection being possible)
2. Mavketl, based off vibes (sorry!) all game, but especially from two recent things: the D4 winespray post, and not being dead. Specifically, Lataro said his grip on reality was getting weaker on D3, and vanished at the end of the day. Mav said the same on D4, but did not vanish.

He says he lied because he thought I'd think badly of him if he told me he roleblocked me. I'm not so sure, it seems like scum-falseclaim-gone-wrong to me.


On a sidenote, Buffy is like the only game in which people got on my case specifically for not being "super townie Mav". I'm glad I had you fooled, though.

I really have no idea what to do about this upcoming lynch. Regardless of EH's alignment, I can't do anything about him, so there are 3 players I can vote for:

1. e_e has never pinged me to any significant degree
2. mpolo has not directly done anything to get on my radar. There are a few oddities here, but I really really don't want to vote based on that at LYLO. I had really hoped he would be around.
3. Mavketl has pinged me a good couple times, but there's a strong reason I'm not voting for her: Lataro. His depiction of their conversation matches hers perfectly, including the cross-roleclaim confirming. Also, the whole FAOT thing. I don't trust her, but I can't figure out a way everything makes sense if she's scum.

Yeah, you were probably right in thinking that after your short stay. I was really lurky throughout day 1, I had to finish a bunch of university stuff before the holidays, then during the holidays I was stuck in Nowhere's ville and only my phone to post from. So posts where short and pretty useless. I've tried to come back from that as best I could after I got better access to a PC, but it is inevitable in such situations that some people will develop a bad opinion of you.

Anyways, I didn't claim anything beyond my one shot cryo-freeze ability which I used on mpolo. I am an anti-mage, I did not use my ability day 1. I was blocking e_e from the beginning of day 2 after they said something along the lines of "look they appeared in Alpha, obviously it will be safer for scum to try and stay in this thread" it seemed like a very odd thing to say, with no content, and I thought it might be a scum tell, and I figured it would be good to block them just in case. This was unfortunately before the message was relayed that you were killed by FAOT.

I have since revised my opinion after they claimed anti-mage, the details seemed right on that. I queued my block on FAOT for D3 in case your info was right, there was no reason to doubt it, and better safe than sorry, but then he killed himself so that was pretty much wasted. After that I let e_e go over to Alpha since they had already claimed and that roleblock would be better over there. D4 I blocked VZ, which he claimed. I didn't want to give myself away D5, so I didn't block him.

He claims to have found me neither magical nor anti-magical, so he was lying for some reason there. Either he thought I was scum and didn't want to tip me off, or he was scum lying about it to cast suspicion on me.

Anyways, I felt the best strategy was for someone to play it cool and chill over here as long as possible as keeping myself alive as long as possible seemed like the most important thing I could do. My ability really hasn't seemed like it is all that useful, and at worst could be detrimental by blocking the wrong person.

Oops, I have misremembered my days numbers. I really should go back over PMs before posting. I had not done anything d4. I meant to go after VZ in case he was up to something being alone with me, but never actually went through with it. I just counted that when I looked in my inbox and saw action for D2, D3, and D4. When it was simply a PM telling Aardvarki to cancel my queued up block.

Truth is. I have the omni-block. I used it against you d1, because I think you are good and hence very dangerous. d2 EP, d3 VZ, d4 no one. I figured if I told you that you would hate me for blocking you and smear my good name. I tried to make up a better looking story to give decently accurate information without giving too much away in case you really are evil, but I guess that doesn't matter at this point since whether you are town or not, you are probably going to be smashing me in Alpha.

Either way, VZ did lie as my omni block is a magical ability and if he did scan me while unblocked on d4 then it should have come up that I have powers.

Just goes to show, being sleep deprived, and making rushed decisions, leads to poor decisions.
