It's 838, not 837 and you are supposed to add a comment of yours.

As far as the comic goes, I like it. I've started to use Linux in the past several months and so I actually got what was going on in a Linux comic. Sort of.

So does this mean he'll get a lump of /tmp in his stocking this year?

Yeah, I noticed a bit after I posted but thought no one had seen it since no one had replied. It's gotta be a slow night here if I was the first to post the comic. By the time I come to the forums the thread is almost on page 2, and I come here as soon as it's updated.

What distro is he using? Everyone knows that root’s mail is stored in /var/mail/root (not /var/spool/mail/root), as defined by the FHS.

/var/spool/mail works just fine:

Code: Select all

$ ls -l /var/spool/mail
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 7 2009-10-29 21:39 /var/spool/mail -> ../mail

Code: Select all

from __future__ import skynet

A little bit overkill, since 90% of those 'incidents' are the admins in question testing out the sudo functionality, or forgetting to add their user accounts to /etc/sudoers. At least, that's the only thing that I've ever seen this message for, though I never use multi-user machines.

Who cares. Comments that the first poster has to come up with are almost never insightful (it's obvious they're there only because they have to be) and make the post worse.

I liked the title-text, but I think it would have been funnier if it had been more of a play on the state of your computer: "He sees when you're in sleep mode... something something wake."

That message has always scared the crap out of me. For example, I once tried to see if I could remotely shutoff my teacher's computer in Tech class via the command prompt. I executed the shutdown command as Administrator, and it spat out the Windows equivalent of that error message. I was so freaking scared, I thought they would expel me or something. Because of course, my high school is run by luddites, and would never take a joke kindly.

BOFH. What a blast from the past. Very funny, but too bad these days computer users don't have a sysop - they just interface to their cable company. Hmm, maybe I know where all the BOFHs went.

So, Santa runs diff twice on the lists?

The only time I got this message was when I was trying to diagnose network problems in my college computer labs using nmap. It scared the piss out of me, especially since they really know what they're doing there.

So Windows users are pretty much guaranteed to be on the naughty list, thanks to the programs always performing illegal operations.

Anyone try singing it?

He sees you when you're sleeping/
He knows when you're awake/
He's copied on /var/spool/mail/root/
So be good for goodness' sake/

after the Dickinson comic I can't help but think he timed it.

I saw that too, and judging by the above confusion, it sounds like he actually did fudge it a bit to make it fit (wouldn't know myself, not a Linux user).

Just a bit. /var/spool/mail/root actually works in most distros, but /var/mail/root is the standardized one.
Max2009 wrote:So Santa runs diff twice on the lists?
That would only make sure nobody is listed in both, not that the naughty list only contains naughty people, etc.

I once tried this on a remote server I had an account on, to see if I could do some very trivial administrator tasks by myself, assuming everyone ignores those "incident reports". I got an angry e-mail from the system administrator telling me to stop doing that, or that he would suspend my account. Probably doesn't know Santa takes care of it.

I noticed that it's the same character sitting in the same chair at the same desk using the same computer as Wednesday's comic "Coupon Code".

Overkill? You do realize it's a comic strip about Santa being a linux user right? It's not really being reported to him..

It's a Christmas song. Santa Claus is coming to town. That's the whole point of it.

Yeah, and the same one who deleted Megan's account from his PC, was consoled by his PC after a breakup (probably the breakup with Megan), almost fell for an FBI trick in an online questionnaire, left a girl after finding out she was actually a spambot, was attacked by a raptor after adding a goto to his code (unless that guy died), etc.
He should be an official character.

And we can now make an educated guess as to his first name: Robert.
