I'm interested. I'll be volunteering at Sakura Matsuri again this year on the 10th, teaching go - I'm not sure if that makes it a good day or a bad day.

Good day. I haven't played go since undergrad and I've been missing it.

All right, so let's do April 10th (Saturday). The Sakura Matsuri is that weekend, correct?

Does that work out for people? If so, we can shoot for a particular time. Or time(s), if different people want to join up at different times/places of the day. KF

The 10th sounds good. Let's take a headcount, and contemplate time/place details.

I'll say that I will come, provided the number of confirmed attendees is three or more. And- mostly for want of any great ideas- I'll propose Teaism at noon. (I've only actually been into the District twice in the last two years, so I'll take anyone's suggestion who live there.)

Great! Let's stick to noon-time, by the way. I'm sort of planning something else later that afternoon that I don't want to ditch you guys for...

My only concern is that it's gonna be rather crowded. I might try to get there like at 11am or something. KF

April 10th @ noon conflicts with the Sakura Matsuri Street Festival.

As much as I'd love to meet some people, I'm going to the festival.

It should be pointed out that our usual meetup point at Teaism is only a couple blocks away from the street festival. There's no reason not to do both—I plan to.

Indeed! One of the reasons I thought we'd stick with Teaism was precisely because it was right next to the Sakura Matsuri. If you're going to be there, why not stop by, have a drink, just say hi or something?

Anyway! I'll see you guys tomorrow then?

If anyone needs to recognize me, I'll be the South Asian guy in probably a brown Blue Sun t-shirt. If you'd like to know my cell, drop me a PM. KF

The wife and I didn't get downtown until almost 1pm. We stopped for yogurt @ Fro-Zen-Yo, wandered the festival, enjoyed the J-Pop stage, and never made it over there to see if anyone was about.

I don't know if I'll be able to make it, but I've updated the first post.

This thread isn't specifically for a past meetup; I've been changing the first post and title each time a new one is scheduled. I just... neglected to change it last time. My bad. KF

Alright - so before this thread dies, let me suggest a time and place. I live relatively close to downtown DC, so I'm completely flexible and am open to a totally different date, time and place.

How about Saturday Jan. 29th, afternoon, at the Teaism on 400 8th St. NW.?

I'm always fine with elsewhere, but it's really because no one has come up with a good alternative that's also mutually-accessible by enough people in the area, and that can accommodate a group. KF

There are lots and lots of places to eat, drink, and sit with a group of people. Compiling a list of them all isn't reasonable so instead here's just a few:
Coffee/Tea:
- Bruegger's Bagels
- Caribou Coffee
- Teaism

Casual Dining/Cafe:
- Pret a Manger
- Vaipano
- Au Bon Pain

All these are in the Federal Triangle/Chinatown area.

In my experience, the pricer stuff at a place is, the fewer people at a meetup tend to buy anything. Teaism has gotten less lenient on letting groups stay around for a while when only a few people in the group are actually eating/drinking there (groups meaning anything that requires more than one table to all sit together), and they have also gotten progressively busier as the years go by.

I'd actually really like some alternatives; I keep trying to suggest ideas for them but few seem to come up. I'd suggest more this time around, but considering it's still a 50/50 shot I'll be able to go, I'd rather not suggest something and then be unable to come by.

Coffeehouses are usually really good, but the best ones (e.g., Tryst in Adams-Morgan) are always so packed it's difficult to get a spot.

Bregger's, Pret a Manger, and Au Bon Pain are all good choices. There are also a few places in the Golden Triangle area (between Farragut North/Farragut West/Dupont Circle), like Bourbon Coffee, Crepaway, another Pret a Manger, 2 Caribou Coffees, and about 5 Au Bon Pains.

I'm not much of a fan of Vapiano though. The one near Farragut North left me very unimpressed. KF

Alright people, you want another meetup, you got it! Short-term meet up will be to watch Spaceballs (!!!!!) at the Rosslyn Outdoor Film Festival on July 15th at 7:00PM. Movie starts at 8PM.

Location is Gateway Park, Lee Highway near Key Bridge. Two blocks from the Rosslyn Metro so it should be accessible to anyone who can buy a subway ticket (and since the movie is free, this is a cheap night at the movies). Parking is available at the Atlantic Parking Garage for $3 off of N. Moore Street after 6 p.m.

We'll meet there at 7:00, pick a spot to lay out blankets, and discuss whether Lord Dark Helmet was the first hipster (as going 'plaid' eventually became a really popular thing). They might have food and drink there but you can bring your own food/beverage to save $$.

May the schwartz be with you all.

(p.s. longer-term meetup will be for July 23rd. I have nothing planned, i'm just picking the date now so you all can be aware of it. I suggest visiting HacDC or another local hackerspace; HacDC is 2-3 blocks from the Columbia Heights metro)

but anyone up for some wiffleball/kickball/frisbee on the mall? Would love to set this up for any weekend in May if there's any interest out there.
