It's the only stuff I'll listen to if I can help it. I used to just like rock, but progressed my way to metal and then to death metal. I favor melodeath more than death metal, but love both a fair amount. My iPod's pretty much full of:

I live close to the border. And if I have enough people (and there will be enough, because it is SOAD), the tickets will be really cheap.

Hmm... I looked around a bit and the transportation is affordable. Then I went to check for a ticket. 150€ Good fight.

It does look like a Basely (or whatever his name is; the lead guy with the huuuge mouth (Side note: srsly cool that the lead singer/guitarist of the band does their (awesome) album artwork)) work. In fact, I read somewhere it was, but I'm disinclined to believe that, just cause they live in Norway and speak Norwegian. When they speak in English it's like "We made a 10 top list! Multiple yays!"
It's possible, though. Give that album a LISTEN.

This album art struck me as oddly familair after seeing Kvelertak's artwork.

I can also recommend this band, Sons of Aurelius, their album The Farthest reaches is sweeeet. Greek themed tech-death metal. I never listened to tech or death before, as I like to think I'm too smart for that sort of metal, but I really like this.

Too smart for tech-death? Pfft. I'll give that album a listen. I've also heard good things about Ocean's 2010 albums, so I shall go on a metal downloading quest.

I always think it's funny that Led Zeppelin were originally called heavy metal. Nobody even says "heavy metal" anymore.

Those Ocean albums are pretty good, but don't compare to their damn-near-masterpiece Precambrian IMO. Definitely worth listening to though.

And that Sons of Aurelius band doesn't sound too bad, they definitely have some skills, but the songs sound like lesser versions of other bands to me. As far as tech death goes anyways, it's hard to beat Gorod and Anata in my book. Also yes, I have no idea what being too smart for tech-death means.

I've been thinking today about my top 10 albums of 2010 list, and although i'll probably switch some out these later, so far it's looking like:

Alcest, Deathspell Omega, and Kevelertak are on the list. Maybe the Dillinger one and the High on Fire one, for metal. Not for overall best of 2010, though (Kvelertak is on *that* list, though. maybe Alcest.)

Couldn't get into that Deathspell Omega, although I've never been a fan. Kvelertak is definitely pretty awesome, and although it didn't quite make it into my top 10, it made it into my 'get pumped up' workout mix.

Some of the songs don't really work for me, but it's high energy for sure, and a very interesting style.

Makes me wonder if anyone ever tried to (facetiously OR seriously) label themselves as "light metal". I wonder what kind of thing would come out of that.

Led Zeppelin never really had anything to do with metal, but if I'm not mistaken, the term wasn't originally coined to them, right? And Black Sabbath only came out an year after them, which makes the context at least understandable. But, yeah, amazing how things change. With so many people trying to out-metal each other, even Black Sabbath sounds a wee bit like a child's play today!

I believeee their sound was called heavy metal at first. 's what my father says, anyways; I wasn't alive. I know a lot of bands like Iron Maiden, one of the godfathers of metal, were considered punk. Thrash and stuff was too fast-paced to be called METAL like sabbath was, so it was called punk.

I get a little lost when it comes to that period of music and all the ramifications and terms, but I think you're right: Led Zeppelin earned the "heavy metal" name simply for want of a better term, not as an attempt at creating a new "genre". Anyway, back then there were already bands and songs initiating prototypes of what we call metal today, like the Beatles with Helter Skelter and Pink Floyd with The Nile Song.

I think the problem with the heavy metal label is that it's widely used to encompass all metal genres into a single category. At least I, personally, use the term heavy metal to mean "old school" bands like Maiden and Priest, that are more traditional, even though I don't quite like the term Traditional Metal.

Seconding Devin Townsend. So good. Pretty much all his solo albums are great, especially the latest three. ( Ziltoid the Omniscient, Ki and Addicted ) He'll be releasing two albums this June and they're already the albums of the year for me. ( Deconstruction and Ghost )

Also seeing him live in March and it's already the gig of the year for me. I might be a bit of a Devin fanboy.

Edit: The band he was in, Strapping Young Lad made great stuff as well.

Nothin' wrong with being a Devin fanboy; guy has made some of the best music out there, metal or not, IMO.

I'd argue with you that his older albums like Ocean Machine/Biomech, Terria, etc, are the best, but really, it's all fantastic. Ki and Addicted were killer, and I can't wait for the next two. Definitely saving spots on my best of the year list for them.
