American Pie Mafia
Mini -- PyP -- Closed Setup

A Mafia game based on a bit of musical exploration and interpretation. Or something like that.

Game-specific rules:

GS1. All players sent in a list of three role suggestions according to the following rules:
  • Roles must be persons or things (not places, sorry) mentioned in the song "American Pie" by Don McLean.
  • Your role will be somewhat linked to your alignment and power.
  • I will try to give you your top suggestion, but I make no promises. I will, however, promise to give you one of your three.
  • You can submit/change your choices until I start the game.
  • Please be awesomely creative with your choices -- assume your role works unless I make you repick 8)
Roles were assigned from those suggestions.
GS2. There are no restrictions regarding roleclaiming.
GS3. Day ends when the hammer vote is cast or the deadline is reached. Even if I have not officially ended day yet, do not post content.
GS4. When you die, you are not allowed to read spoilers until I specifically tell you. (Please feel free to ask in case I forget.)
GS5. Please CC me on all PMs.
GS6. Lynch will be by majority (>50%) before the deadline. The top vote-getter will be lynched at deadline if they have at least 30% (>=30%) of the votes. If the vote is tied at deadline, there is no lynch. There are no secret vote-altering abilities; players will be able to accurately determine the votecount at all times.
GS7. The game setup is closed, but not intentionally bastardy. You may or may not get answers to questions you ask, so it doesn't hurt to try!
GS8. Rolenames and alignments for lynched and nightkilled players will be revealed in the morning.
GS9. Lurking is bad and you should feel bad if you do it. We've had some games stagnating here lately, and I don't want this to be one of them. Try to post every day, though posting every two days is fine. If you go over three days without posting, though, you will get modprodded. First time is a friendly warning, second time is a less friendly warning. Third strike, you're out, and I look for a replacement. If I can't find one within two days, I'll modkill.

If you anticipate being less active for whatever reason, please say so and I'll be more lenient. If you anticipate being completely inactive for a long stretch, please request a replacement.

Living at endgame:
1. mpolo, queen, Town
2. ForAllOfThis, God, Independent
3. weiyaoli, the Jester, Town
4. greenlover, love, Town

Dead/Exited Players:
1. FermiumBalloon more_people, Jack Flash, Scum
2. Lataro, whiskey and rye, Town
3. mieulium cjdrum, Book on Marx, Scum
4. Wooy`, Lennon, Independent
5. Mavketl, lover, Town
6. tastelikecoke, church bells, Town
7. BigNose, February, Independent
8. Ibarra, Satan, Scum

Replacements:

Yes, please send in roles now. And in the interest of moving things along... let's set a deadline of Thursday for that.

Oh, and if you've sent in roles and haven't heard anything back from me, the roles you sent work. :)

Devising roles and whatnot now; expect roles out Sunday.

Also, Van has had to drop out, so we stand at 12 players.

Goddamn did he need a smoke.

Fidgeting, he glanced at the glaring red of the digital clock. 1:26 AM -- 34 minutes until his shift ended. Too long.

He shuffled through the tapes in the box marked "Longrunners". Did Stairway already. Bert chewed him out for playing "In A Gawd of Whatever" twice in one month, so that was out. And all the other ones sucked.

Ad was coming to an end, though, so whatever. He grabbed one at random, inserted it in the ridiculously expensive equipment (if Bert was to be believed). Stood up, waiting to make sure it started up. It did, and he darted out.

A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.

But February made me shiver
With every paper I’d deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more step.

I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.

He lit up in the cold dark outside the back door. The radio station's engineer joined him.

"Hey, sorry about the shitty song, Ray, had to take a break."

Ray shook his head. "Do you even know what that song's about?"

"Some hippie shit or somethin', I don't care."

"Well you would, if you knew any better. Just about every line means something. For instance..."

Ray proceeded to explain.

Begin Day One!
12 players alive, 7 to lynch. 4 to lynch at deadline, tentatively set for Monday, Feb 7th.

All players must answer the following poll question before voting today. Your vote will not be counted until you have answered.

Which of the following figures is least likely to be present among us?
(A) Jack Flash
(B) Lennon
(C) Marx
(D) The Holy Ghost

Answer: Lennon?
IDK who Lennon is anyway :)

Anyway, I'm Ibarra, and this is my first game on this forum. I played on another site called Mafiascum (http://mafiascum.net/forum) before.
There, we usually start of with RVS (Random Voting Stage) or RQS (Random Questioning Stage). Apparently this forum does things different?

Well a few questions for you all,
1) What is your favorite role to play, and why?
2) Would you lynch lurkers?

Answer: The Holy Ghost

Because I had "The Father" on my list and didn't get it…

To Ibarra: Welcome!

Often the first day's lynch boils down to being pretty random, and often people make random votes to encourage discussion. However, completely random votes without some sort of backing-up tend to be jumped onto by the others. I guess it's similar with the questions -- we have one of the current games where a bunch of random questions are going around, though.

Favorite role: Probably a mason. I generally prefer (and do better as) town, and as a mason, I have at least a little information to go on.
Lurker lynching: Yes, I would lynch them, but only if I can't find a better target. In general, the mods try to deal with the lurkers, so voting them is more a lazy vote.

Answer: Jack Flash

The question says which is the least likely to be in the game? Well if lots of people had holy ghost on their list and didn't get it, I would think that means someone else did.

In answer to Ibarras questions:

1) I've played a few mafia games now and I generally do better as town. I've been lynched pretty quickly when I was mafia, for simple mistakes on my part.

2) I'm against lurker lynches as I feel it really hampers town. I will change my vote if its needed to reach a lynch on a lurker though (as a lurker lynch is generally better than a no lynch).

& You don't know who lennon is? He was in the beatles and got assassinated/murdered. Pretty famous icon.

However, completely random votes without some sort of backing-up tend to be jumped onto by the others. I guess it's similar with the questions -- we have one of the current games where a bunch of random questions are going around, though.

That's good to hear, I skimmed through some of the threads and only saw people trying to guess the flavor and roles. So basically it's pretty much similar here too. Back in MafiaScum we tend to random vote someone and bandwagon for pressure, and if someone slips, we target him. We also ask lots of questions. More questions = more info.

Well I didn't know him until an hour ago when I googled the name. I really didn't listen to the Beatles that much.

Man I feel / am old.
I'd say welcome Ibarra, but as you just pissed me off, I'm not sure. :D

I think my preferred role is Townie, trying to find out who to believe and who not to.
I find that as Scum, I tend to not put in as much.
I advocate lynching lurkers. Too many times I have seen Scum duck the lynch by failing to post a great deal.

Answer: THG
For no reason, other than I gotta vote for 1 of them.

Because it was on my list and I didn't get it. :(

Guess what the other two on my list were...
I expected you to pick Satan for a first choice, and then God and I believe there was a fallen angel somewhere... :P

I, too, had something in the god/devil category on my list and did not get it. I can't help but think that there is something behind that poll other than to get us talk about random things. My first theory: none of those four roles is in the game, but there is one person who will get the role that we vote "least likely to be in the game". And based on that, I'll vote for the one who seems least likely to be anti-town:

Anything townie with some sort of power. Preferably one that gives me information about other players, like any kind of cop, mason, targeted daychat abilities. Also, I've never been an inventor and I'd really like to be one day and come up with insanely clever things that will then be nerfed by the mod because they're too cool.
Ibarra wrote:Would you lynch lurkers?
I would not lynch a 'passive lurker' (someone who does not post): the mod is supposed to deal with that. I would consider lynching an 'active lurker' (someone who posts a lot but their posts don't contribute anything), though I prefer to have something more to go on.

1) I haven't played many different roles (at least online), and really haven't found myself partial to any particular one, so long as there's a lot to do- the more separate win conditions people have going on, the better. My favorite game, specifically, was one where I was mafia, and spent most of the game working with the town to eliminate the cult.
2) Lurkers aren't exactly my first choice for a lynch, but if no other obvious target presents itself, it's a good idea to get rid of a lurker. Even if we still don't know who we got rid of, it's generally a good idea to have, as much as possible, people who have posted, and thus given some information that can hint at what they are. Later in the game it's not good to have people who are complete mysteries.

Answer: Marx

No real preference and I went with weird picks so they can't help me with this.

1) The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind

On a more serious note, probably scum/cult/masons. It's always more exciting being part of a group. Although I must say I would prefer being a mason, because I'm pretty bad at playing scum.

2) Probably not at first; especially not if there are many replacements avaliable for the game. If the day starts to really drag though, I wouldn't mind one if we have nothing else to go on (particularly on D1, not so much beyond unless it's active lurking)
And you thought I was crazy...

1. Scum, but only if the setup isn't a complete screw you to scum. If you have to ask why, you don't know me yet.
2. I'd lynch anyone if I thought it'd go well with whatever plan I was hatching.

Mav, I specifically didn't do Satan because I was afraid I'd get it, then I'd be sunk because everyone would assume I'd pick it. All I'll say is my number one was God, and my number two was THG. I got my number three. I imagine because any role for the first two would of been too OP.
