Nothin' wrong with being a Devin fanboy; guy has made some of the best music out there, metal or not, IMO.

I'd argue with you that his older albums like Ocean Machine/Biomech, Terria, etc, are the best, but really, it's all fantastic. Ki and Addicted were killer, and I can't wait for the next two. Definitely saving spots on my best of the year list for them.

Yea, I have the same issue. The only reason why I like Ki the best is because it is so different from the rest. It's definitely one of my favorite albums ever. Addicted was great and a lot of fun but I think the earlier solo stuff was better than Addicted. But overall, Devin is probably the only musician who is so consistently awesome.

By the way, have you heard the live EP he put out as a free download two weeks ago or so? It's a hell of a lot of fun.

Edit: For symphonic metal:
- Within Temptation ( Their earlier stuff, also they originated from the town I live in. )
- Blind Guardian ( Their latest album was great, also less power metal more symphonic. )
- Savatage ( They made quite some stuff, but my personal favorite is their album "In the Hall of the Mountain King" )
- Versailles ( If you don't mind Visual Kei )

Symphonic metal is power metal, but slower and with 50 extra instruments. :P

Symphonic Metal: Nightwish (you didn't mention having any already) and Epica are excellent as well. And Kamelot.

Tons of good progressive metal bands out there. If you haven't already heard them, I'd recommended checking out the following bands:

Devin Townsend
In Mourning
Winds
Orphaned Land
Cynic
Hammers of Misfortune
The Gathering (start w/ How to Measure a Planet)
Disillusion
Kalisia
Mastodon (Crack The Skye)
Edge of Sanity
Psychotic Waltz
Gojjira
Ikuinen Kaamos

and Bloodbath (not prog metal, but same singer as Opeth. Also, amazing)
I'm sure not all of that you'd dig, but hopefully you'll like some.

How can you list prog metal and not mention Dream Theater? THE prog metal band. Petrucci is why I picked up guitar.

also, is there a tab for this? That riff is meaty. Ultimate guitar doesn't really do much for international acts.

That's pretty sick. The first time the synth kicks in it was kind of weird, but overall I loved it. Really like the fact he sings in Hebrew. ( I think, not sure too lazy to google ) The solo at 3;00 is cool as well.

And not everybody likes Dream Theater.

More prog metal: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnPYYotRqYM The second part of the song is the best, starts at 7;20 or so when there is a break with animal noises and stuff.

The entire album is so great that I can't even begin to describe it. The rest of their stuff ain't on the same level though. ( Not to say that it's bad as it's still good music ) But Back to Times of Splendour is such an intense album.

'scuse me, but if you don't like "Ride The Lightning" as one of the definitive albums in the entire genre of metal, you, sir, don't really like metal. I mean, it's not even my favorite metal album, but just like a Model T wasn't the greatest car, it's still goddamn important in car history.

I have to agree with this sentiment. Metallica is pretty lame now, and Lars Ulrich is full of himself, but Ride the Lightening and Master of Puppets are landmark albums. They define thrash and just about every metal band now a days owes Metallica for what they did then. We can hate on how lame Hammet's playing is (those solos get old fast) and how far past their prime they are. But I think their early work gives them pass to do that for the rest of their lives.

Oh and creeping death is \m/

Fast ascending arpeggio! Whammy bar! Go back down the neck and play the blues scale with a wah pedal! go back up the neck with the wah pedal! More whammy bar! some arpeggios! end on a really high note!

Not liking is something entirely else than not reconigzing the importance of anything, and I know Metallica was very important and deserve their status but it's not really my genre, vibe, mindset etc..

That being said, I'm not a true metal fan or whatever, I listen to music I like and some of it is metal. It feels kind of strange when Robbie Williams is followed by Strapping Young Lad followed by DMX though haha :P

In other news; this is pretty awesome.

Figured I'd dump this here. Anybody else a Skindred fan? They just released a new album, and this time it sounds like they're actually trying.

For anyone who's never heard of them, they're a reggae/metal/electronica hybrid, and be warned- it's not for everybody. That said, if the description doesn't pique your interest on some level, I'd posit that you are quite deficient in basic human curiosity.

As a long time fan, I'll give this album a tentative thumbs-up. It's the first album they've released that sounds good in and of itself, imho. (I've been a fan because they are earth-shatteringly awesome live. Enjoyed them more live even than Tool or NIN, but their studio releases have been barely listenable, until this one.)

Anyways, enough preamble, here's some stuff off the new album. I'm curious to see how y'all react.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h4q6lUMh ... re=related
Titled Doom Rift, more reggae and metal, less electronica.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGTVfTIU ... re=related
Titled Gun Talk, more reggae and electronica, less metal.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bA792oqw7-c&NR=1
Titled Get it Now, more metal and electronica, less reggae.

I must have zero basic human curiosity because that sounds absolutely terrible. All i'm imagining is a shittier, more reggae version of Soulfly, who already populate my list of least interesting metal bands.

Don't mind me though, it's just not my bag, never heard anything remotely reggae that sounded good to me.

To me, Skindred is just another flavour of garbage produced by the numetal scene that should have died a long time ago.

Anyone here listened to The Faceless or Obscura? I have both of their latest albums. Would anyone recommend any of their other albums, or similar music?

Not a big fan of The Faceless, but I think the new Obscura is actually pretty damn good. For more tech-death I would reccommend Gorod (Process of New Decline is fantastic) and Anata (all of their albums are pretty good, but Conductor's Departure and Under a Stone.. are my favorites).

Haggard - Eppur Si Muove
Haggard - Per Aspera Ad Astra
I'm not really into symphonic metal (Don't particularly like Nightwish, Epica kind of things), but Haggard has the classical parts sounding more olden style and the metal parts as proper metal (Growling vocals, heavy riffs, etc). It's more like multiple bands/voices intertwined than a singular flowing; "well textured", if you will.

I've seen Skindred live, not really my flavour, but I have to admit that they were pretty damn good live. I'd see them again just because I liked their performance overall (Wouldn't say the same for many bands).

What? This is an ignorant statement. Why should one's mode of dress have anything to do with their talent in anything? Why should you be pissed that a cross dresser is talented? It makes no sense.

Anyway, my tastes in metal used to run pretty deep, now it's pretty much Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath when I listen to it at all. I sample new bands every once in a while but the new school just doesn't resonate with me as much as the older stuff.

The Faceless & Obscura: I heard good things about both, but never listened to either. Maybe I should.

So while some of us like Dream Theater and some do not, they've officially got a drummer now- Mike Mangini.

There is documentary about the audition process they went through, and I'm looking forward to their new album (which is nearing the end of recording right now).

I didn't find it particularly hateful, cause it was a joke.

Been listening to a lot of Black Sabbath recently... and also [url=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j4zAMHXBgF0Causa Sui[/url] which is instrumental not-metal but during the middle section it gets pretty Electric Wizard.
