C-c-c-combo breaker!

No I haven't been. I've been called smart, hard-working and clever but never genius. It's probably because I hang around with people who are all great at what they do so they know being good at something is usually hard work and not some innate ability. In fact, even when I do really well on, say, maths and physics papers, people who aren't doing this subject say "wow, you must be really good" as opposed to genius but then, there are quite a few others in our year who do as well if not better so I guess that's that. And I like that because at least people aren't fooling themselves about what genius really is. And I occasionally fuck up too, at which points it's like "yeah, people do that".

However, when adults hear about the course I intend to do at the uni I got an offer from they assume I'm "smart" but then it's always followed by "I was awful at Physics", so it's not really being clever, just good at something different. I get the feeling I'm going to be even smaller fish in the even bigger pond from next year.

I got called a genius today, because I helped a girl in the year below me with some of her homework that I did almost exactly a year ago. That's just misuse there.

I wonder if there's higher instances of men being called 'a genius' than women. Hard to collect data on that, but this thread suggests there may be no bias either way as people of both genders have been posting that they have been called it.

Personally no, but then academically I am good at English type things but bad at maths/science things which are more typically related to genius (and I'm not smart enough anyway).

I think intelligence is biological to a certain degree. This girl I know named Jaklyn(actually she's a ts) still retained her analytical nature. I think having an analytical nature + problem solving abilities equals intelligence. Hormones completely knocked out a lot of my complex reasoning ability, but I became more social and more socially smart.

Sorry, what are you arguing here?

I was just wondering if it was a social construction to call men geniuses more often (we do live in quite a patriarchal society still) or if it makes no difference.

Yes but usually when the speaker is trying to soften the next the dissapointing statement that follows.

"You're clearly a genius but you just don't have enough experience doing this kind of work."
"You may be a genius but I don't think you have have the resources to make this project successful."
"You're a genius but I only have enough room in my budget to afford someone who is fairly bright."[1]

When someone calls me a genius, I know I'm leaving a meeting empty-handed.

Yes, but really it's a case of specialist knowledge most of the time; basically what demon-llama said.
I'm not a genius, but a lot of people seem to lack, what I consider to be, basic thought processes (I'm not sure how to correctly describe it really). This often leads to complete oversights into things which would otherwise be obvious, namely things which can only be found out by thinking in a particular way (Not necessarily lateral thinking, but that's clearly important).

I was told that I "possessed a genius for close quarters engagements". I was also a "genius when it comes to cooking". I've never been called a genius, as in, "Wow, you're a genius". Because at best, I'm a fast learner, and intelligent. I'm just not Einstein, Grace Hopper level.

I do get called a genius fairly frequently, but mainly by my girlfriend. I know I'm not a genius, but I am intelligent and well-read, with a good memory. I'm a good person to ask about stuff, and I'm happy with that.

i guess i would have been as a baby, there was a story i heard many times from my mum that when i was seen by a doctor as a very toung child they thought there was some sort of clerical error on my birthdate because i was so advanced, but we're talking when i was mere months old here.

these days genius is thrown around a lot, and generally more for "common sense" reasons than intelligence reasons, so i am rarely called it, since i may be "bright" but my common sense is practically nil.

It's amusing that pretty much every post here says "people call me a genius, but I'm not, or I am lazy so it doesn't matter." Now to claim to be a genius requires you to be sure of yourself and also sure that you are more worthy of the term than everyone else* in the entire thread. It just isn't cool to say you're smart and doing so anyway means you have to live up to it. :|

People have called me a genius in the past. Since starting university and switching focus from what I knew I was very good at, I haven't stood out.

*Not everyone has explicitly denied being a genius but they still make such a claim more difficult in various ways.

It's not a question of "being cool".
It's just that the more intelligent you become, the more you are aware of your shortcomings.
Frankly, I am very smart in the "processing power" sense. But intelligence is much more than that; and I am smart enough to realize that I downright suck aside from speed.

The thread isn't about posters claiming to be a genius, it's about posters having been called a genius by another person.

I think there's an element of social stuff to it, whether it affects you or not. The Dunning-Kruger effect would be part of it too.
MiB24601 wrote:The thread isn't about posters claiming to be a genius, it's about posters having been called a genius by another person.
Yes and the answer has continually been along the lines of "Yes, but it was unwarranted/intelligence is relative." It feels like people are going out of their way to point out whoever called them a genius was wrong and they aren't that smart. "Genius" isn't a solidly defined term so surely some of those people could have been right using a "looser" definition of genius?

Well, if we follow your previous statement[1], it seems that if the poster isn't sure that they are a genius and that is why they rebuke the appellation when others try to apply it to them, then the poster still wouldn't be a genius, no matter how loosely the word is defined.

yeah, for me any assumptions of "genius" are pretty much just reactions to "pretty awesome information retention", a trait I get from my father. I'll talk about taking a flashlight camping and he'll go "actually, last week I found a tiny LED flashlight which I put on... uh, I think it was the middle shelf of the wooden cabinet on the right side of the garage."
And, indeed, it was there.

ALL the countries? That would make you pretty genius-like IMO

There are currently 193 recognized countries, and 10 sovereign states.

For comparison, there are currently 646 Pokemon, and a fuckload of kids who know the names of every goddamn one.

Solution? Country Pokemon. Attacks your Hounduras with my Poland’s Machinery Equipment (steel based attack)! Could dole out type based upon commerce and general personality. Can give Flying or Water type to countries with high tourism. Should have aggressive countries be Fighting type. Might have disputes on Dark type and Psychic type, however.

Hrm...would Atlantis be Ghost/Water?

May make kids believe that war was just a trainer battle, though.

Yes. People have called me a genius since I was 8. Usually it was as a preface to an admonition though. IE, "You're a genius though, how can you be confused about your gender". Or "you're a genius, how could you not know *information which is only relevant to specific context that I lack exposure to* ".
