We're even more fanboys & girls than that. There's another vote for h2g2 buried in the singles at number 15. Can I just say thanks to Microscopic cog for compiling all this - it's fascinating reading.

(It also restores my faith in humanity to see Dan Brown still at the bottom of the table)

Sherlock Holmes novels and short stories (Sir Arthur Conan Doyle)
One Hundred Years of Solitude (Gabriel Garcia Marquez)
The Lord of the Rings (J.R.R. Tolkien)
The Hobbit (J.R.R. Tolkien)

Also, can I cast a negative vote? I'd like to take some books down a few notches.

Thanks Jumble, it's not a big deal though, I like doing it and it keeps me from having to make my own reading list. :D

Negative votes don't seem like a great idea haha.

There's another vote for h2g2 buried in the singles at number 15.

I think that was a vote for just the first book as opposed to the whole series, hence its being counted separately.

Yea about that...I read Jumble post, checked, saw he was right. Then I had the same thought as you and looked for a post that only voted for the book and not the series. Aaaaand.. I couldn't find it. So unless we find the origin of that vote, I'm going to put it up as a vote for the series.

I know I posted at the beginning of this thread, but at that point I hadn't read any of the Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin.

Now that I have read most of it, I would like to add that to my list, as it's damnably brilliant.
The story so far:
In the beginning the Universe was created.
This has made a lot of people very angry and has been widely regarded as a bad move.

2. The Wasp Factory - Iain Banks
3. Arthur and George - Julian Barnes
4. Staying Alive - Matt Beaumont
5. A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson
6. Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell - Susanna Clarke
7. Discourse on Method - Rene Descartes
8. American Psycho - Bret Easton Ellis
9. The Informers - Bret Eason Ellis
10. Catch-22 - Joseph Heller
11. Brave New World - Aldous Huxley
12. Ulysses - James Joyce
13. The Trial - Franz Kafka
14. The Call of C'thulu and other Weird Tales - H.P. Lovecraft
15. On Liberty - J.S. Mill
16. 1984 - George Orwell
17. The Catcher in the Rye - J.D. Salinger
18. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas - Hunter S. Thompson
19. The Lord of the Rings - J.R.R. Tolkien
20. A Picture of Dorian Gray - Oscar Wilde

I have omitted some absolutely incredible authors. Dostoyovsky, de Beauvoir, Nabakov, Tolstoy, Twain, Dickens, Hawthorne, Fielding, Updike, Faulkner and many others; I am truly sorry...

I forgot completely about Steinbeck, one of the best authors ever. This time last year, I had almost finished reading his bibliography in two months. He's the definition of "unputdownable"!

This is a great thread for reading suggestions, incidentally. Forgot I've been meaning to read Nabakov's dystopian stuff until I saw him mentioned here.

Oh I know. I did a critical analysis of modernism for high school last year. Faulkner, Hemmingway, Frost, Eliot, etc were alright, but Steinbeck blew me away.

"Into The Wild" - Jon Krakauer
Seriously, I can't believe this book isn't on the list (well, I suppose I can)
This was a fantastic non-fiction that stirred my adventurous spirit with wonder and worry all at once.
If you haven't do, please, check it out.
Also, I read "Ender's Game" because of this thread, and I must say, I was very pleased with the book!
And since there is only one other person who is showing Xanth love, my tally's will go for him too ^_^

(+1)'s
"Into The Wild" - Jon Krakauer
"Xanth Series" - Piers Anthony (suck it Pratchett)

Intentionally ones not yet on the list:

Kingdoms of the Wall - Robert Silverberg
The Mote in God's Eye - Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle
Earthsea trilogy - Ursula Le Guin
The Time Traveller's Wife - Audrey Niffenegger
Some people tell me I laugh too much. To them I say, "ha ha ha!"

There have been some other nonfiction that have slipped onto the list. Someone ought to clean those up.
