I'm going to try to put together a Laser Tag event for my upcoming birthday. If anyone's interested, it'll likely be on Saturday, and I'll post more info once it's final. Or PM me if you want to be included in info for it.

The Boston Wikipedians are organizing Wikipedia Takes Boston which seems like the sort of thing some of us might be interested in taking part in. The project is essentially a contest to see who can gather the best copyleft/open/etc. photos of landmarks in and around the Cambridge area. The primary goal is to help illustrate landmarks that don't have photographs on the English Wikipedia. The event is going to be April 17th. Further details are on the linked page. I'm going to be out of town and so not able to make it :cry:

but others here will probably be interested.

Including ticketmaster fees, advance tickets online are a bit over $15. Could probably get 'em for $10 by actually going to the box office, but who does that?

I think I probably heard of them through the dresden dolls but I remember seeing humanwine live in concert before the dresden dolls. I have now seen humanwine at least 6 times so they are definitely a thing.

Also awesome, Porchfest. Which was yesterday, sorry for not mentioning it before.
I was on Pearson St. in Ball Square and heard a few bands in my sister's backyard. A pretty cool jazz band was on, no idea what they were called unfortunately. They played the Zelda theme with heart. By the end of the evening EsotericWombat ended up getting into a rousing debate with the editor of the Somerville News regarding the death penalty. One never knows what will happen in Camberville.

Anyone want to go to the Chihuly exhibit this Sunday? I know people are totally having party like things due to the 3 day nature of the weekend, but it could be cool and I'm meeting other people to do this thing.

Cambridge is offering free self-defense classes to its female residents and city employees for the next four Saturdays 9am-noon. You have to call to reserve a spot. Not sure how many Camb- people are around here besides me, but there ya go just in case.

Next Monday is July 4th. 3 years ago I celebrated by spending the whole day camped out on Memorial Drive in the perfect spot for Boston's fireworks with a bunch of other forumites. It was the best July 4th ever and so I repeated it the last 2 years with any friends I could find and as many of their friends as they could bring and so on. I will most certainly be doing it again this year. Even though I don't hang out on these forums or with my friends from these forums as much as I used to, I still wanted to let everyone here know that I will be amassing a large group of people and would love to see some of you.

The spot we claim every year is on the Memorial Drive median between Ames and Wadsworth, right next to a large green road sign. It is the right in front of where the fireworks barge always is and one of the few places where there are no trees in the way. One way to find it is via this event page I created on facebook. Or you could just use this map.

Kendall/MIT, on the red line. Then go one direction or the other on the street the station's on, until you hit Ames or Wadsworth, and take one of those down to Memorial Drive.

Also, I'll be at Kendall at 1pm, primarily for students of mine who want to walk down there together, but others who are unsure of how to get to the spot from the station can join us as well.

Alternately, go to Kendall/MIT and follow the mass of people who are all going the same direction.

I.e., if I came, should I bring copious quantities of uncooked food and undrunk beverages?

Can you BBQ on the banks? I've been broken for every 4th of July I was in Boston before so I have no idea. I want to bring some form of foodstuffs but I don't know what yet.

Always bring beverages. Always. And don't say if. That makes me unhappy.

We get there early to make sure there's enough space for all of us, and to hang out and play games, and to make it worthwhile to have to spend an hour or two getting home afterward. (If you just come shortly before the fireworks, you'll never find anyone, be crushed by people, and spend about as much time trying to get home as you did on the riverbank.)

There's open parking on holidays in Somerville and there is TONS of parking by my place, so anyone is free to park near me and walk over. It's about a 15 minute walk to Davis.

I have a friend who's moving from Columbia to Boston to go to grad school at Boston University. (Biomolecular Nutrition.) He's lived here in Missouri his whole life, so moving out to a bigger city might be a bit of a rough (and lonely) transition for him. If I got some of his contact information for when he moves out in August, would there be any kind souls here who'd be able to spare some time to meet up and show him around?

Anyone going to object wildly to me bring my dog to the oh so exciting event? I dislike leaving him alone during explosion time and he will need to be walked during the almost day long hang out time, so it is the most convenient.

I wouldn't say "object wildly", but I'm not sure that bringing your dog is the best idea. Later on it gets pretty crazy crowded and especially when everyone's trying to leave at once. Also, they close Memorial Drive at some point but earlier in the day it is still the median of a pretty big street. You know your dog better than I, but I know that another friend of mine was going to bring her dog last year but was talked out of it and afterwords agreed it was the right decision.
