What songs do you listen to when you run/workout?

Postby Sam7791 » Wed Nov 17, 2010 9:46 pm UTC

Hey, I didn't see a thread like this, so i thought i would create one! Basically I'm in need of new songs to run to. I enjoy running to upbeat rock songs, so if you have any you should post them :D ! Or just post the songs that you generally enjoy running to/working out to, since there are probably people here looking for new songs to run to that have a different taste in music than I do. Anyways I'll start out with some of my favorites.

For lifting I put "Dead and Bloated" by Stone Temple Pilots on repeat and go to town. The intro is nice and gritty to get me ready and then when the music comes in it comes in really hard to help with that first rep with heavy weight. For running I like "Big Boom" and "I Feel Fantastic" by Jonathan Coulton. Both of those just have the right tempo for my pace.

Stuff with a strong 4/4 or 2/4 at the same tempo as my workout, generally in the 110-130 bpm range. Mostly 80s music, I've noticed.

Most of them are about the same length, too, so I can roughly time my workout by how many songs I've gone through.

I have one playlist for my interval workout:

All songs, on random, that are between 3:55 and 4:05 length. Song changes, I change. Much better than staring at a watch the whole time. And I'm pretty eclictic in my tastes so occasionally I'll get a Avenged Sevenfold for my rest periods and then something like a Margaret Cho standup bit for my heavy periods.

Depends on what type of work out I'm doing. If I'm doing hardcore cardio, I like to listen to faster paced music (such as Voodoo People by Prodigy). If I'm doing yoga or stretching, I like something a little more quiet (usually what they play on the speakers during practice).

Reeducation Through Labor (Getting psyched)
Psycho (End of a run)
Three in the Morning (For warmup / the mid-run slog)
Animal I Have Become (Anywhere)
All My Best Friends Are Metalheads (Toward the end)
The Distance (Anywhere)
Bang on the Drum (Anywhere)

This list and the genres associated are my musical tastes in general, too. Makes things easier.

I normally run to a podcast called Podrunner. He does techno remixes of a ton of different music types with a wide variety of beats per minute. I normally select something in the 170-180 range to help keep me on a good tempo.

When running outside I don't listen to anything - I prefer to be able to hear my environment.

On a treadmill though, love upbeat stuff - Less Than Jake and ska can be good.

Also "Weapons of Mass Distruction" by Faithless fits in *perfectly* with my pace.

I don't listen to anything, just focus on the run. When I lift weights, I find the wire just gets in the way so I stopped.

This. I took an MP3 player to the gym exactly once, and the earbud popped out halfway through a set of overhead presses. Plus I don't want to fiddle with electronics with my hands covered in chalk.

I can't really pay attention to music anyway while I'm actually lifting. It only matters between sets.

Recently, I love listening to Jonathan Coulton's "Creepy Doll" while I run, because it's creepy enough to give me something to run away from.

I don't listen to music when lifting, unless someone has the stereo at the gym on. When I'm doing cardio, I prefer songs that are either up-tempo or kind of angry. Probably the single best song for me when I'm on the elliptical machine is "Hash Pipe" by Weezer. The tempo is just right to give me a good workout, and it has just a tiny bit of anger to motivate me.

Generally I listen to metal, trance, techno, reasonably fast pace, and aggressive stuff. Some examples would be: System of a down, DevilDriver, Machine head, Lamb of god, Rammstein. Half the time I don't listen to music when exercising and, with some exercises, the cable gets in the way.

When I run, I like it where beats are ever so slightly slightly faster than my foot stepping time at a medium volume.
When I'm doing sprinting I like really fast, hard, loud music. I've listened to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CeadBqSMQhs quite a few times; in particular, I build up the speed between 5:49 to 6:01 from a fast walk up to full sprint, as well as maxing the volume.

Thrash Metal is great for working out. Especially biking, running or anything cardio. Master of puppets is my fall back.

Angrier the better. If I don't want to punch you in the face for running past me, I'm doing something wrong on the trail.

I find that letting my imagination run wild with ultra violence helps keep the adrenalin going. Mostly it's videogame or movie imagery, but FWIW, it works.

it depends on what im doing.

For lifting, i Enjoy some heavier stuff with a strong bass. Maybe somem rock or Rap. like:
Fort Minor
Foo Fighters
three days grace
nickle back
nirvana

stuff like that.
For running or biking (especially outdoors) I like relaxing music. Music that I can listne to and enjoy and take my mind off running and just apprecite what im doing, and when in a prettyt areaq appreciate what im seeing. Song like
babylon-david grey
one head light-wallflowers
thugz mansion (acoustic version)-2PAC
Hey Ya (acoustic)-Obadiah Parker
Send me on my way -rusted root
Island in the sun-weezer

anything like that. Music that puts a smile on your face.

If im biking or running in the gym however (which i hate) ill listen to stuff like:
all american rejects
train
fall out boy

not a huge fan of those types of bands (except train) but its good for that scenario i think.

These days I tend to pump gameboy based chip grooves though the cans as I walk to work (sadly the most exercise as I get until its warmer)

most recent obsession is Henry Homesweet's Out House series:

It varies, but mostly, I prefer angry intense stuff. Hostile rap, anything with lots of John Popper Harmonica, SoaD, Matrix Soundtracks, Dub Trio, etc.

My marathon mix is a bit softer, but the name of the game is still kick you in the nuts go.

Lately I've been listening to Hardcore History, which is pretty cool, but I can't exactly push to it.

Angry, aggressive metal, hard rock, and prog rock when I'm doing strength workouts; to get me all hyped and testosterone-y. Low-bpm (comparatively) hardstyle and DnB for cardiovascular; necessary because I'm dancing to it.

I mostly listen to Avenged Sevenfold (used to be System of a Down but I've worn those tracks pretty thin). Also a little All That Remains and an interesting French group called Pleymo (who have some really intense music, but oddly a lot more pop).

Depends on my mood, sometimes I'll listen to a playlist of traditional 'rocky montage' type songs(Rocky theme, eye of the tiger, live to win etc.) Sometimes I'll listen to power metal.

Generally when lifting I'll listen to something heavier, like demon hunter.

Soldier's Song and Undying in particular.

When biking, I'm listening to a wonderful medley of screeching tires, blaring horns, and screamed obscenities (Okay, not really that bad, but the drivers down here truly ARE terrible)

I never used to listen to music but that was when I could run outside. That's less of a possibility here, so I do have a bunch of music. This is a bit messier than most of my playlists. I try to mix the music in a way that matches how I pace my run, but I've just been adding songs to my playlist through my iPod rather than on iTunes lately (yeah, I'm terribly bored tonight.)

While my driving around/chilling in my room playlist is similar to what you have there, I don't know if I could do that while working out. I can't picture running to kanye one minute, men with hats the next and then sprinting to the end to Matiyashu.

While I enjoy all the music you posted (or at least the ones i know [who is shark island?]) I cant imagine that kind of variety while working out.

Most of my workouts are long endurance sessions of cardio (eliptcal walking biking). For those workouts I find that jam bands help the time fly. Specifically I enjoy Dispatch, The Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead and Phish. For my other workouts strenght and yoga I find that music isn't necessary and the media player can be a bother.

3 doors down generally, 3 days grace if I'm feeling particularly ambitious.

My favorite song to run to is Saosin's Move Slow.

PROG! Any Progressive Rock fans here? I always listen to The Mars Volta, or Dream Theater, I'm often o focused on the music because of the skill required to make prog, It distracts me from the pain of exercise.

You really don't want to get songs off of limewire as most of them contain alot of viruses. I would recommend using media converters to convert any music off of youtube. Or use genuine MP3 download sites. Any descent web browser will show you the site Certificates to make sure the site is safe.

"The Pretender" is my favorite sprint song.

Recently I started listening to Above and beyond, Anjunabeats and Edward Maya on my endurance trainings nice beat to run on. But not everyones taste

During sprint training (when I'm alone) I tend to listen to anything that has 130+ bpm so Happy Hardcore and stuff like that

I will edit in some links later on... (when I'm not working so hard  )

Anything that's fast an upbeat. It has to have a beat that's fast enough because I tend to run with the tempo of the music so slow music just doesn't cut it.

Here's part of my playlist:

California - Hawk Nelson
Someone Else Before - Hawk Nelson
First Time - Hawk Nelson
Long and Lonely Road - Hawk Nelson
Walking on Sunshine - Katrina and the Waves
Single Ladies - Beyonce
Long Live - Taylor Swift
One More - Superchick
Most of U2's faster songs

That's a few of my songs. I have a bunch more but it's too long to type.

My normal playlist really, which consists of mainly old rock - Zeppelin, The Who, Bad Company, BOC, CCR, CSN&Y, Deep Purple, The Eagles, ELO... The list goes on for a while.

For running, I find that "Across The Border" by ELO makes me absolutely kill myself at the start of a fast 1 mile or something :P

For running, mostly rock, breaks or video game music, with a bit of metal thrown in. My current list has Muse, Stanton Warriors, The Prodigy, Metallica, Kid Kenobi, miracleofsound, Pendulum, zircon, biggiantcircles ... Lots of stuff off ocremix.org too.

Needs a decent tempo, but a bit of a mix to push me to go harder if I'm flagging.
