What do the following U.S. States have in common. None of the rest of the U.S. States share this characteristic.

Alabama
Alaska
Arkansas
Hawaii
Kansas
Kentucky
Mississippi
New Jersey
New Mexico
New York
Tennessee
Vermont
Washington

They are all elements of the set {Alabama, Alaska, Hawaii, Kansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Tennessee, Vermont, Washington}.

I was going to say "All of their vowels are in alphabetical order," but then I discovered Arkansas, which isn't on the list, but shares that quality. Possibly Maryland, too, if you're lax on the 'and sometimes y' criteria.
Is 'no' your answer to this question?

That is correct!

Arkansas was left off inadvertently...apologies to anyone else this messed up. :oops: Maryland was left off intentionally, because in this case I think it is a vowel.

When I initially opened the thread I could tell it was something to do with vowels but didn't get beyond counting them before my attention span took my mind off puzzling aspect of the post. Cool idea for a puzzle though!
