Is 'brony' really considered a gender neutral term? I've certainly never seen 'bro' used to refer to anything but men. I would've thought they were both very strongly tied to referring to men.

Robin was Barney's bro in How I Met Your Mother. And since he made the line popular... The original use was certainly meant for men only, but it broadened.

And the FAQ on the MLP subreddit says it's gender-neutral.

I always thought that was because Robin was "one of the guys" and not a general use of "bro", I doubt Lily would ever be described as a "bro".

I call my little sister "bro". But I also call my dad "bro" so I'm not sure if I count.

Anyway, I've watched Party of One which convinced me to watch more, so I started at episode one and I've currently just watched episode six ( or seven? Dragonshy ) and I think the show's real neat and it's popularity pretty interesting. I love the ponies and the characters but I can't help but be a little annoyed about the predictable plots but then I remind myself it's a show for kids so I shouldn't complain.

So I made it about 2 pages into Cupcakes (I quit right about the point where it started getting... gorey. What can I say? I watched Saw for the plot) and it has kind of ruined Pinkie Pie for me, at least a bit. All of her crazy wacky shenanigans just seem a lot more ominous now.

I always thought of her as just more of a Looney-Toons type character that didn't even acknowledge the existence of the concept of a fourth wall and I loved pretty much every scene she was in. Now, though...

Definitely the creepiest part about reading Cupcakes after having watched the show was reading it in her voice. It was very uncanny.

I read it right after I had marathoned all episodes the first time, I had their voices perfectly in my head when reading it.
I got over the dark feelings about Pinkie Pie, now it's just another meme to poke fun at and dare newcomers to read it.

I love Pinkie Pie.

I used to think she was a pretty good pony, but having her as my avatar has made me like her about 20% more.

Also I chose this avatar when I'd watched far less of the series, and as of then she didn't have many super-obvious flaws.

That, and the fact that while it's always obvious she's competitive, it's not always obvious that she's a complete jerk about it sometimes.

Basically she started out as a perfectly unrealistic character with perfect confidence (well, perhaps a bit of overconfidence) and a lot of skill, and throughout the series was shown to be far more realistic and relatable.

Yes to the first (and also no), no to the rest.

Rainbow Dash is selfish, sure, brutally honest, of course, and she didn't even notice Fluttershy was falling to her death. I'm pretty sure she would have tried to save her if she didn't have high-velocity induced tunnel vision.

But calling Twilight an egghead and then laughing in her face? Out of character for her and for Applejack too. Just calling her an egghead is just Rainbow Dash's matter of fact style, but the cruel laughter was clearly just there to deepen Twilight's (anteanteantepenultimate) triumph later.

Does anyone care to give an (in universe) explanation of the cutie marks?

Most ponies seem to have a name, personality and cutie mark that all go together. Some more than others; "Pinkie Pie" isn't very descriptive, but her party balloons cutie mark fits her energetic personality, Twilight Sparkle has sparkles for her cutie mark, but neither seems to correlate much with her personality. In the background we see ponies whose cutie marks correlate with their jobs. Did they base their careers on their cutie marks, or did their personalities conform to their jobs and shape their cutie marks?
Cutie marks are clearly a sign of maturity, but are they genetic or congenital latent traits that develop later in life, or are they purely spiritual/magical indicators of conscious choices?
Do cutie marks ever change? Do any ponies get embarrassing or inappropriate cutie marks?
Apple Jack's whole family has apple themed names and cutie marks, meanwhile Pinky Pie's family has a rock farming theme. Are mismatched cutie marks a source of familial tension?
The main ponies all got their marks close together, and related to the same incident, is that typical?
