What kind of Melon is This?

Postby mercutio_stencil » Sun Aug 21, 2011 11:47 pm UTC

I just returned from the farmers market with what was described as a 'Chinese Edible Rind Melon.' It looks like a cross between a lemon cucumber and a funky heirloom tomato. True to the farmers word, it tastes like a melon; it has a sweet lime green interior, rather soft flesh and a good bit of pulpy seeds. I'm curious to find out more about this crazy melon, but a google search doesn't reveal anything. Does anyone have any hints before I see the farmer again?

Post a picture, and I can take a few guesses.

Hmm, yes, a picture would help. That makes me think of a pepino melon but those are not Chinese.

Terribly sorry, but photos are not available; the melon was devoured far to quickly to allow for that. My cursory googling did reveal the pepino melon, but I think I have my hands on something different. The melon is much more squat and flattened than the pepino, and lacks the distinct point. Think of the shape of a large heirloom tomato and you'll have a good idea. It sounds like I'm going to have to wait for the next farmers market and try to squeeze some more out of the farmer.

Perhaps a muskmelon or casaba melon?

I searched around a bit and found a picture that looks like what you described. Here:

It's from this page: http://www.clovegarden.com/ingred/melons.html
But whoever wrote that piece wasn't certain of what type it was either, having heard "green melon" or "asian green melon."
Joy of Cooking was far less of an achievement than Thyme Cube discovery, for I have Cubed the Spice, with 4 simultaneous flavor types in 1 plant of Earth.
