Wow, old thread.

Anyway, warning to anyone in the U.S. ordering pizza elsewhere. (In may be obvious from this thread.) Be careful about ordering pizza with "everything" on it. Different countries have different ideas about what counts as pizza topping. It can be a waste of a good pizza and good caviar. Zohar's toppings looked pretty odd, that's Israel, yes?

Pesto instead of tomato sauce sounds delish.

Mushrooms, onions, bell peppers, and a meat other than pepperoni = a delicious pizza. (Olives optional.)

I'm from Israel but they're considered pretty odd here as well. Most people have pineapple topping with pepperoni or something.

I'm usually quite a openminded guy, but warm pineapple on pizza is something I will never understand, or accept.

It's that combination of a taste that doesn't fit into the rest of the pizza, the nasty feel that warm pineapple have, and the awful smell. It's wrong, and morally inexcusable.

For anyone that can't figure it out: I'm exaggerating in the above - I do detest pineapple on pizza a great deal, but I generally don't care to much how you mistreat your taste buds, as long as you keep it away from me.

pineapple with pepperoni? in the UK "Ham and Pineapple" is a staple pizza topping, but not pineapple and pepperoni

Роберт wrote:Pesto instead of tomato sauce sounds delish.

i like pesto, but i find it pretty sickly, i think it would overpower a pizza if it were used in place of tomato sauce, unless perhaps it had no cheese, so it was just base, pesto and then meat or veg or whatever,

i never could have imagined a cheese-less pizza until i ordered a four seasons that i didn't realise only had cheese on one quarter, the other 3 quarters were surprisingly nice, and i normally love cheese.

I dunno!!! I'm vegetarian!! Stop attacking me!!! Besides maybe it's because ham isn't kosher so some places don't carry it. Doesn't stop them from service meat on a pizza though. :P

*wiki* Ah, turns out pepperoni is made from pork as well.

Anyway, I dunno, I never bother to look at non vegetarian pizza toppings. My point was that it's very possible to see a place serve meat on top of a pizza, but not pork, though both are non kosher.

Personally, I LOVE hawaiian pizza. Also good: other cheeses, like gorgonzola. Fresh tomatoes. Pretty much any meat. Unacceptable: Mushrooms, onions.

The statements I see in this thread..

Mushrooms and onions are both among the single best toppings known to mankind.

If any of you are ever in the vicinity of where I live I'd like to prove that my mushrooms, onions, bell peppers on a tomato base (with lots of garlic), on a sourdough bread of coarse flour and durum flour, topped with mozzarella and Gorgonzola are superior to any other pizza.

(for the record, most pizza places around here are owned by middle eastern people, that usually doesn't eat pork either - they have 'pepperoni' made on lamb, which is very good as well!)

I'm sure it's fabulous, I just don't like mushrooms or onions. And I don't really like peppers on my pizza either.

i agree with Chuff, but only because i am allergic to mushrooms, and onions have the most horrible texture of any food ever, i can only eat them if they have been cooked to death to the point where they are falling apart, and have their flavour covered up by something else like in bhajis or a bolognase or something, but you might aswell just use onion powder if you wanted to cook something that's supposed to contain onions, for me.
totally acceptable onion analogue is garlic though, i can't get enough garlic ever.

i also don't like peppers, maybe chuff is my pizza soulmate.... nah.

I'm pretty sure the cows who gave the milk for the cheese are not the mothers of the animals slaughtered to make the meat.

You're probably right, but that doesn't matter in Judaism. The bible may literally say not to cook a calf in its mother's milk, but the inhibition has been extended to all meat not being cooked with any sort of milk. This even applies to chicken. Not to fish, though, because they are not considered meat, kosher-wise.

Can you assemble as a dish after you are done cooking them?

Don't think so. Hyper-traditional households will have separate serving-wear (plates etc) for meat and dairy dishes, if I remember rightly.

See, it seems to me that if you wanted beef on your pizza, you ought to be able to just use goat cheese, and then pile on the beef.

Has anyone had pizza with goat cheese?

I've had goat cheese on my pizza. Usually it's in addition to regular cheese. It's not bad.

I'm pretty easy going with pizza. No olives. That's probably the only thing I won't eat, and if there are olives, I'll try picking them off first. Not a big onion on pizza fan, but I can deal.

White sauce is pretty awesome on pizza sometimes. Not an every time pizza, but generally pretty good. Also, I like 4 cheese over mozzarella.

I will heartily agree with no olives. To me they overpower the rest of the flavors, and I don't really like them that much to begin with anyway.

Except... it doesn't work like that. It's a combination of <any milk> with <any meat>. Including poultry too. Why? Turns out in the past it was simple enough to confuse chicken with beef, so they disqualified chicken too. The problem doesn't exist these days but it's a very traditionalist religion.

You could always use soy fake-meat or fake-cheese. With fake-meat, even normally pork-based toppings are possible.

I'm a big fan of pizza topped with döner kebab, garlic sauce, hot sauce (sambal) and (French) fries, topped off with cheese. Yes, you read that right. Not too often mind you, but every once in a while, it's delicious!
