Why Chemistry?

Postby Capt.Awesome » Tue Dec 27, 2011 5:06 pm UTC

Hi, I have to write an essay about why I've chosen Chemistry as my major... and I really don't know why. I know I enjoy it, but there really hasnt been a reason. I plan on Med. School so I guess chem makes sense, but i really can't figure out what to say or how to put my thoughts into words...
Help please?
I really just need a spark of inspiration here
thank you

In the UK, Chemistry A level is a requirement for Medicine, while Biology isn't (though most people do both). Maybe you can search for why that is?

Did you take a certain class that started your interest in Chemistry?

What sort of stuff in chemistry do you enjoy most? (designing syntheses, doing syntheses, learning about cool compounds, analyzing unknown compounds, organic vs. inorganic and/or physics-ish vs. biology-ish)

Do you have any interesting problems you'd want to work on solving?

Actually, biology is being asked for quite often now. One of my friends is applying for medicine and hadn't done biology so he's had to teach himself the first year and pick it up for his final year before uni so he can get in.

That said, the point still stands that chemistry is extremely important for anything medical.

For me, back in high school, Chemistry was the first science that really just made sense. Fundamentally I was a Math geek, so P-Chem and Organic Chemistry put some structure to my early Biology classes which seemed more theoretical at the time.

I bet if you think about it you'll find something that just logically draws you to enjoy Chemistry... otherwise you would be on a different forum

Are you graded on the content of the paper or just the form. If you are only graded on the structure sounds like a great excuse to proclaim your life long dream of working for a drug baron in the jungles of Vietnam, spending your days building giant scag labs and living in a mansion filled with illicit cash and Cambodian hookers. .... Maybe it's a good thing i never majored in chemistry.

But seriously think about some other things you would do if chem wasn't an option. Then think about why you would rather major in chemistry than some other field. It might give you some insight on why you are doing what you are.

I like to think that chemistry has a lot more solid analytical reasoning as opposed to biology, which tends to be somewhat "softer" and can rely much more on memorization – but you say you're going into med school. Perhaps a better question is, why aren't you doing biology instead?
