File Transfer?

Postby Ventanator » Mon Jan 02, 2012 1:19 am UTC

I just got a new desktop as a bit of a Christmas present. It's set up to dual boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I'm not the most technically knowledgeable, but I figured it wouldn't be hard to set up the ability to transfer files from it to my Macbook.
I'm running into problems though.
I have Samba set up, which isn't so bad. However, it only really seems to go one way; I can get files from my desktop onto my laptop like that. I've also got it set up to allow me to screen share, which should let me ssh into my Macbook via the desktop. I've also got Dropbox set up , which allows me to do a lot of what I'm looking for.

But all of it seems like I'm just rigging it up. I would really like to be able to simply have a shared folder that is always accessible OR set it up where I can ssh into the desktop from my laptop. I have the ability to go from desktop to laptop, but not vice-versa. Whenever I try to go from laptop to desktop, I get there error:
Code: Select all
port 22: connection failed

I've tried googling it, but I haven't got any results that seem to apply to my situation. I may just be using the wrong terms though, as it seems like something that should be rather simple. Oh well.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Have you set up ssh on your desktop? I'm not sure about solutions on Windows, but on Ubuntu the software to do this should be preinstalled. Try 'man sshd' to see how to work it (I'm assuming that if you're using ssh you're familiar with the terminal and man pages. If not, use the terminal to type man sshd, which brings up a man page (basic help function on linux) about the command sshd (ssh daemon, basically the server program)).

I've done the full install for everything I've seen to have anything to do with it..is there some configuration file that could have a hidden NO somewhere that I need to find?

I'm pretty sure you can just set up a shared folder in Windows and OS X should be able to see it.
