milestones themselves are pretty arbitrary by nature, not sure if there's any such thing as a milestone that isn't arbitrary.

Imho second zero, just above the "Woooo".

I can't find him... :( It would appear, however, that I've found the girl from #7. Very cool.

The WOPR from War Games is at the 11:00 position in the 2nd zero, and the stick figure Matthew Broderick next to it. I'm just wondering where the stick figure Ally Sheedy is...

With SI having defined 1Megabyte=1000Kilobyte, 1000 is now the round number (not 1024).

Contratulations Randall!!

I love your comics. This one made me laugh out loud. Good thing no one heard me. It would have been difficult explaining it.

I'm thinking you deserve 1000 comments in this thread!!

Peace to you and your wife,
Randy

Wouldn't it be great to have an online version with links from the characters to their comics?

I might even pay $1 for that!

Anyone up for a challenge?

Peace,
Randy

2^10 isn't really any more puristic than 2^9... so I guess we'll have to wait until comic 65536 (= 2^2^2^2) for the next major milestone.

And I sure this will be a veeeeery long-lived thread, with new "spoted something!" posts showing up every day.

Most of them repeated, obviously.

Yes there was. You just didn't get it.

Sort of there was .... more a joke than a comic, but it counts!

What I'm wondering is when that was put up. Did it actually go on-line between comics 403 and 405?

its a spoofed url to another comic site that cleverly disguised their 404th comic as xkcd's missing 404th. but it is not a randall made xkcd comic. click next or previous comic on the site to see.

Spoiler:
it's a joke, a different stick-man-based-nerd-humour comic called Comic JK did it as their 404th strip

It's strange that no. 500 wasn't considered a milestone. But maybe Cueball experienced an Internal Server Error.

Well, I guess we should go out for drinks tonight, or have a last minute party.

Christ... a bit emo don't you think? Do thousands of random Internet viewers really address the author's loneliness? Surely not.

I'd guess that he's speaking about intellectual loneliness, not about emotional loneliness. IE, he's happy that he's found other people who think a bit like him.

The Portland Linux/Unix Group had an xkcd1k eve celebration last night. We showed these cartoons http://keithl.com/xkcd.html on a computer projector, and drew our own guesses about the xkcd1k cartoon. Mine (below) was inspired(?) by forum arguments about 10^3 vs 2^10 . Nobody guessed the actual cartoon, which is just as well, because they would have been drawing all night.

Also recall that 1024 is going to set a 10 bit counter to zero, and how uses 10 bit counters anyway. 0b111111111 is 1023 is 0x3FF which is not such a wonderful number for geeks. 0xFF(http://xkcd.com/255/) is quite cool though. Since we are past an 8 bit counter, we need to hook up 3 4-bit counters and max that out, but then we would be at 4095, which would be a long time to wait.

Of course 0x400 has some appeal to me, so waiting to 1024 might be better than 1023. Though I have always had a crush on 0x7fff, so I will be waiting for 2047 as the next mark, or 2048 for those that want to use the twelfth bit.

First figure I thought of to check for was Stallman and the katana.

I had to look it up though. There's two of them (the katana's, not Stallman).

Ok, I've found two possibilities for Waldo. Help? :)

Spoiler:
1. 1st zero - slightly left of 12:00: Looks like he's got glasses, backpack, cane, and obligatory hat.
2. 3rd zero - about 7:00: looks like he's only got the hat.

Opinions?

First post for me, but I've been reading xkcd since somewhere in the 200's. Thanks for the many laughs, Randal. And CONGRATS!

Why not?
