Tom Waits
Lee Perry
DJ Shadow
Sidney Betchett
The Clash
Toots and the Maytals
Godspeed You Black Emperor
The Pogues
Johnny Cash
Bob Dylan

That's a hard and pointless question to answer, I've gone for people who've made most consistently flawless records, but there could have been any of a dozen others up there too.

I feel that, in terms of consistency, no-one can touch Waits. 22 albums and none of them bad. An incredible talent.

Radiohead / Jonny Greenwood / Thom (I could make that my top three, but why exclude?!)
Joy Division
The Smiths
At The Drive In
The Beatles
The Strokes
Regina Spektor
The Mars Volta
Led Zeppelin
Grizzly Bear

I'd also like to mention Emil Gilels, Glenn Gould, and Mstislav Rostropovich. Though obviously they are a different kind of artist than the type intended, my adoration for their interpretations never ceases.

Top 10 is wicked hard, ain't it? The second time through should be easier though, as it becomes the top ten that I can't believe I forgot about...

1. David Bowie (Lifetime achievement/most influential award)
2. Brian Eno (For 1st two albums primarily, and producing)
3. Radiohead
4. Tom Waits
5. The Adverts/Bad Brains/Television/Richard Hell/X-Ray Spex/Gang of Four/Minutemen/Dead Kennedys/Zero Boys/Offspring/Green Day
6. Can/Frank Zappa/Alice Cooper/Black Sabbath/Queen/Elvis Costello/Joy Division/New Order/Thomas Dolby/Adrian Belew/The Smiths/The Cure/Pavement
7. The Band/Creedence Clearwater Revival/Grateful Dead/Moody Blues/America/Bread/Cat Stevens/Supertramp (trying to be honest here even showing my uncool faves...)
8. Stereolab/Ben Folds/Wilco/Flaming Lips/Yo La Tengo/Fountains of Wayne/Death Cab for Cutie/Of Montreal/The Decemberists/Mumford&Sons
9. Jesus Christ Superstar
10. Nuggets

No, it really is just my Top 10, plus a measurement error due to a high standard deviation. (Or in this case perhaps a 'high standards' deviation...?)

With 90 bands instead of 10, your experiment has 800% relative error; if I were you, I'd work on my systematic error :P Anyhow, most of them are among my favorites too (maybe even in the top 10 sometimes, mine tends to float a lot)

Good suggestion! It turns out I didn't notice the scrollbar, and sure enough there were 10 more hiding below. At a nice round Adrian Monk 100 it became easy to spot the misplaced decimal... operator error again, for which I humbly apologize.

1. Harry Nilsson
2. Camper Van Beethoven
3. Steely Dan
4. The Mekons
5. Pixies
6. Cheap Trick
7. The Beach Boys
8. Cardiacs
9. The Pogues
10. Robyn Hitchcock

What's with the extra "mentions"? This is clearly supposed to be just your Top Ten. Sure, others might have bent the rules slightly, but they actually listened to all of Floyd's albums before placing them below Iron Maiden. Take your time....

Edit: Sorry, it was totally unfair to judge like that, especially after listening to Meshuggah which made me realize I was asking way too much.... Kidding, I'm kidding. Seriously though I respect you since obviously I wasn't even able to commit to a proper Top Ten. I'm only up to Top Five after thinking on it for weeks. Deciding on the other five would ignore so many more that remain important to me.

Plenty of errors and fudges are in there, with people submitting main people from bands, abbreviations, last names vs. first names, etc. Also I ignored XTCamus and a couple people that went off on a tangent focusing only on composers.

In no order at all,

The xx
Nirvana
Leonard Cohen
The Wombats
Laura Marling
Miles Davis
Amanda Palmer
Alice in Chains
Arcade Fire
Hole

Sort of a mix between grunge, indie-ish and folk. Oh, and jazz from nowhere with Miles.

You've probably got some duplicates, I noticed Flaming Lips and The Flaming Lips.

Whoo, boy, super hard. In no order:

The Decemberists
Death Cab for Cutie
Stars
Green Day
Sufjan Stevens
Silversun Pickups
Phoenix
The Beatles
The Shins
Arctic Monkeys

Honorable Mention: Interpol, Sam Cooke, Passion Pit, Milo Greene, and at this point I had to stop going through my music library, or you all would have had a list of about fifty artists just floating around.
...huh. Well, that's awkward.

Top 10 Artists - That I am currently enjoying the most.

(Still working on that lifetime-weighted-average one that usually starts with some combination of XTC/Beatles/Pink Floyd/They Might Be Giants/The Clash.)

In no particular order...

Belle and Sebastian
Neil Young
Super Furry Animals
Van Morrison
Cheap Trick
Grand Funk
Jefferson Airplane
Radiohead
Devo
Leonard Cohen

My own top 10 ;

1 - Nosfell

3 - An Lár (Celtic folk music)
4 - Oneira 6tet (Greek/Iranian folk music)

7 - Godspeed You ! Black Emperor
8 - The Booze Brothers (Irishezed rock band)
9 - Moriarty
