The particular phenomenon I was interested is the "filling in" period, from sparse growth to developing a full beard growth. The consensus seems to be that some places hair just doesn't grow, but the places that the hair does grow grows at a similar rate. What I was wondering is if you noticed the sparse hair growing in slower than the rest of the hair when it first started sprouting, or whether once you started growing it, it pretty much grew at the same rate as the rest of your facial hair. What I can glean from your answers is that the trend is toward the latter.

I'm fascinated by your follicular facial phases. Fo sho.

If I'd have to describe my own growth patterns as anything.. it'd be... I dunno.. like a badly seeded yard, maybe? Once it started going full tilt and wasn't just a random new hair every now and again, it filled in rapidly in certain areas. After that, it seemed to slowly spread.

While hairs more or less started appearing all over the place at once, along my mid and upper cheek it was so sparse that I kept it shaved down as it looked terrible otherwise, while my lower jaw filled in rapidly.

Also, I'd like to smack the crap out of 2003 me and tell me to shave the damn soulpatch bit off, because that's... that's just terrible.

Well, as far as I can say, it always seemed to grow pretty much at the same rate. However, that was before I let it grow out. I used to shave it pretty much everyday until I hit university. After that, I'd shave once a week, if that. So I don't really know about that period. What I can tell you, is that the hair on my jawline, sideburns and the front of my face (basically goatee) grows faster than the hair on my cheeks. As in, the hair on my cheeks is patchy at best. That's why I opted for the Riker. I do have good hopes that it'll fill in, one day however....

All the facial hair talk makes me wish I could grow some. I'm only 16, and I can really only grow a peace-fuzz mustache and the very beginnings of light sideburns, so I've been keeping it shaved. It'll be a long journey...

What? Shaving another man's kidney beard is a sacred duty, and being asked to do it is the highest of compliments. Asking a man to shave your kidney beard is like saying "You've got my back, right bro?" only waaay more meaningful. Would you really be the guy who turns round and says, to a man in his greatest hour of need, "Nah, not really. Enjoy having a hairy kidney!", would you really put ST through that? By not shaving or trimming your chin and the corners of your mustache, and having the right genetics for it. Oh, and getting some mustache wax or something.

All human hair has a maximum length. This will vary bases on where the hair is, and from person to person. it's entirely possible that no matter how long you wait, it's never grow that long.

I bought my first power tool yesterday. It's a cordless electric drill / screwdriver. I feel like more of a man for having one (and I have numerous ideas for things to build now that I have something to make it easier).

The cordless drill I snaffled from an old job (I was allowed to snaffle it, I didn't steal it!) was good, but not especially powerful. Have you considered rigging some sort of V8 engine attachment?

Well, my excuse to myself for getting it was to put up some shelves, so that will be the first job. After that, probably making dividers for my Magic card collection. It also slightly bugs me whenever I see decent pieces of wood thrown out, so I'd quite like to start picking them up and turning them into shelves or boxes to sell or give to friends. I've also got an idea for a bit of art - not something I'd normally do, but as the inspiration has struck, who knows?

This is my first proper beard, and even if it's not particularly impressive, and quite an odd shade of ginger brown which clashes with my mousey hair, I've finally subscribed to the notion that having a beard is EXCELLENT and I want to be part of the BEARD CLUB and have BEARDED HIGH FIVES, because it's so cool.

I just wish I could push the bush factor to UltraTuft on the piliferous scale, because I have a penchant for prominence, and at the moment, the hair-o-meter is giving a reading of "recessive"

You know, one day soon we'll be able to clone hair follicles, and then a micro-transplant hair replacement procedure will be painless and nigh indistinguishable from what you would have had. Until then just trim it all short and grow a goatee! Right now you can have excellent results with Bosley type transplants with one exception... they have to take a 5"x1" strip of scalp off the back of your head, stitch it up, and parcel out the hair follicles from it to transplant. This is painful and leaves a scar, and then if you want full coverage it has to be done several more times!

We have the technical proficiency to transplant hair and make it look natural, we just need cloning of follicles to make it a perfect solution. Instead of taking a entire strip of scalp off, they'd just dig out a few choice samples of follicles to clone.

Yeah, but where this place is located, they have to dress it up a little bit - it's in a pretty touristy area with loads of restaurants. They also do a roaming wagon operation which is much more low key.

Well, the ring I rescued was purely decorative (my Mum did get it for me for my 22^nd birthday, but I've got a nicer ring from her and my Dad from my 18^th, so...), plus I went to watch My Little Pony and do some sewing afterwards, but still, MANLINESS!

I thought we were talking barbecues themselves. The most awesomest barbecue we ever made was made out of an old rim from a van and some tightly spaced chicken fencing, worked way better than we expected it would.

In other news, beards are handy. Or, as the bouncer at the club said: with a beard like that, you don't need ID.
