I don't know if we are allowed to just add stuff up but I just came across this thread.

I recently got in a car accident and had the insurance company total out my car. I was walking a lot while I decided what to do and realized I live 2 miles (Almost to the meter) from my job and decided to buy a bike (read: she decided). Best decision ever. So that was, Jan 13th. 4 Miles per day gives me 26 days X 4 which = 104 miles.

Now 104 + 1209 = 1313.

Note: I am sure I'm doing 10-15 miles per day (sometimes more) with going to the store/beach/just rides. But the only thing I can track as an absolute is my work commute.

There are a few inches of snow on the ground right now, and our public transit just got off a 3 month strike. I'm taking buses like there's no tomorrow.

It was my own stupid fault - I was doing a mountain bike race, it was dark, I was going faster than I should have in the conditions (I had lights on, but I couldn't see far enough ahead with them at the speed I was going), the trails are all rutted from recent rain. My front wheel dropped into a rut going at 38km/hr, bike stopped and so did I, shortly after.

The biggest consolation is that it's raining so much here at the moment that I'm not really missing any riding so far, but goddamn is having your arm in a sling boring!

Just catching up from my last post. I ALWAYS bike to work. Work is 5 days a week so I just counted forward. I know there are a lot more miles in there but I can't confirm any of them for sure.

I don't know if this is legit... but I have a paper record of my riding in the last year; some adding reveals that I cycled

504 miles comuting to and from uni/riding around the city and outlying towns in a drunken haze,
1584 miles commuting to and from work*,
135 miles off road for the devilment of it.

The commuting to and from work could have been a lot higher, but for the fact that I joined the car owning heathens last september...

That would in theory add 2223 miles, bringing the total to 3800 (which feels suspiciously nice and round)... but most of them would have been cycled before the thread was created; Tomlidich this thread is your baby, what do you think?

In related news, I succumbed to the gearlust and replaced my stopgap "some-fucker-nicked-my-bike-here-i'll-buy-this-for-a-fiver-even-if-it-is-a-decrepit-road-bike" with a half decent crosser... good times.

*Whilst both directions involve multiple long climbs on a busy road, this is also one of the most beautiful commutes one could ask for with the Nant Ffrancon Pass carves its way up the side of the ogwen valley (carving your way back down it on a bike can frankly terrifying in inclement weather, but it just adds to the appeal)...

Edit: Took the new bike on a short ride to dial in the riding position, 1.8 miles in 4:38...
Edit Edit: And another 10 mile lunchtime procrastination ride today..
So that's now 1588.8 (or 3811.8 miles)

Er, but we haven't decided which total to use. I don't think we can count miles cycled before the thread was created, else we would probably be at 10,000 already, so I'm going to go with 1588.8

In response to this..few weeks back, I'm surprised I *didn't* break anything. I did something very similiar. Got off work around 10:30 pm. No wind whatsoever, was on my old hybrid. Picked up speed. It's a long, flat, straight road to my house, so..easy. had a bunch of cars come up behind me and start honking, so I swerved off into a parking lot of some towing place. No big deal, I've rode across it a hundred times. This time someone parked an 18 wheeler in the middle of it, so I went around back, pitch black, no lights on my bike at the time (I got them the next day, to be sure this crap doesn't happen again). Doing about 20 mph I'd say, suddenly I'm in the air doing flips, wondering "What's happening?" and then I landed, slid, and my bike hit me. Yay for a rut made by an 18 wheeler, about 4-5 ft long, 2-3ft deep. It was full ofw ater and mud, and neither my bike, nor I had a spec of mud anywhere. So I cleared it completely, landed on my shoulder, no helmet, no protective anything..When I came by the next day in the light and could see what I had hit, I was like "Holy hell, how did I get away with just scrapes and bruises?"

Needless to say, my bike lights up like the 4th of July these days..(nights?)
Looks like you're back on bike now, at least. Everything healed up alright?

Wow Laraden - not even so much as a speck of mud? Sounds like you might have used up your luck quota for a little while there! :-P

I'm not quite back on the bike. I can manage on the back of the tandem because I don't need to hold onto the handlebars, but convincing my boyfriend to ride with me is proving somewhat challenging. It's been 9 weeks now though, so hopefully it won't be very much longer :-/

Plus 3 miles I walked due to a blown tire. Apparently you're correct, I did use up all my luck. Barely a half inch bump..I swear I spent 5 minutes cussing out my bike before I started walking home.

That's why you should always carry a spare tube/tyre levers/pump ;-)

Unless you ride where I ride, and you should carry two spare tubes.
But how does a person get a flat from a half inch bump? Was it a pinch flat?

And back on topic - 26 + 1681.7 = 1707.7, still on the back of a tandem unfortunately. But my physio says I can start doing weights in two weeks, and riding after that, so there is finally a light at the end of the tunnel!

Excessively lightweight racing tyre casings*, slow leaks in tube valves and burrs in the rim will all achive that do it nicely...

*I once managed to do five tubes in 30 miles that way, after rain washed out a big section of flowy hardpack into a bouldery mess without me knowing.

Probably was a pinch flat, yes, I had commented at work that the tire pressure was a bit low. Forgot to check before I left that day, noticed at work it felt low when I got there. Course it doesn't let me get home and air it up. saddening.

Old bike is crappy, but it's getting me to work right now. still waiting on everything to get here. Don't you love when you pay for high-speed shipping and don't get it?

Edit: My old bike got back at me for calling it crappy. Apparently I did use up every bit of my damned luck. I hopped on my bike, started riding to a horrible grinding sound and my chain jumping /falling off every little bit. Finally got off and looked closely, one of the links was snapped. holding on through sheer willpower.. I made it to work, hopped on bike at lunch to go grab a soda from store down the street..30 ft in I hear a snap and dragging sounds.

Got the actual tire in, waitin gon the tube now.. Thankfully guy at work agreed to give me a ride tomorrow before I have weekend off, since I have 0/2 Bikes available.
Maybe I should just build a bike out of adamantium, wheels and all. Seems I need it.

All I can be certain of for #'s is back and forth to work and back and forth to work and back and forth .... ugh.

I'm moving in about a month and my commute will jump from 4 miles round trip to 14.5 miles round trip.

It's going to be interesting to jump to almost 4 times my daily ride, 5 days a week.

Today is the first day I rode my bike from my new address. Going to 5 miles from 2 is, not bad. But it's Florida and it's effin hot out.
