We ate something called Potatoes and Point.

Dad would get a big bag of potatoes, he'd bake them in whatever spices we had at the time, and we'd find a picture of something really tasty looking in one of my mom's old magazines.

We'd put the potato on the fork, point it at the picture, and pretend we were eating that.

It's the 'weird thing single people eat' because I still eat potatoes and point, even though I'm so bad at cooking that baking the potato is the only thing I can do consistently without hurting a neighbor <_<

I've made a really nice casserole:

Cook up 2 boxes of mac & cheese.
While stirring in the cheese powder, add 2 cans of diced potatoes and 1 can of Spam, diced.
Stir in buffalo wing sauce w/ bbq sauce and put into a 9x13 casserole dish, top w/ bread crumbs
Bake @ 350 for 30 minutes

That gets me through lunch and dinner (w/ a side) for a week.

Saganaki around here is breaded and pan-fried feta slices. Not quite deep-fried, but close. And tasty as a motherfork. I even squeeze the usual lemon slice over it because it's so damn good, fork the (mild) allergic reaction.

I just deep fried the slab, but if I were going to do it again, I would probably bread it or use some kind of batter.

Put a Mars bar on a piece of bread, microwave for 30 seconds - 1 minute. Eat it as you'd eat a hotdog.

Fry a sausage, fry some eggs in the left over grease, put the sausage in a bowl of rice, cover with egg, drizzle with soya sauce.

Peanut butter, straight out of the jar. Great movie snack; fingers are the optimal utensil for this dish.

Eat some instant noodles, still hungry? Add some rice to the soup.

Got some leftover stir fry? Goes great with Mi Goreng.

When I was eight, my mum went on holidays with my little brother for two weeks so it was just me and my dad... usually for dinner we had:
Egg soup; eggs boiled in water with the flavour packets from instant noodles.
Mushroom stir-fry; long, thin-stalked mushrooms with some kind of gravy.
Some kind of egg dish; eggs, salt and pepper beaten into an omlette-like consistancy and then steamed to make a crustless-quiche like thing.


I'm going into my first year of uni now, so reading this thread has really helped me a lot.

That does seem like something I could be tricked into eating. I don't know that I'd ever have it again once I found out. However, I quite enjoy black and white pudding, even knowing what that is. I work with an Irish woman who won't even touch that.

Chicken hearts are just the darkest meat on (in?) the chicken, even darker than turkey necks (which my daughter LOVES). Soooooooooooo delicious.

Pasta cooked in instant vegetable broth, served with olive oil, hot pepper and curry powder. Almost good!

I'm lucky in that I've always been a poor single person who knows how to cook and do yard sales. Freshman year of college, my roommate and I found a toaster oven at a yard sale for about $5. I also got a crockpot for about the same amount.

In the toaster oven (which would also work if you had a real oven, which we didn't have in that dorm building, but would in the next few years) you make a tin foil pouch of ramen noodles and veggies stolen from the all you can eat cafeteria (or frozen/fresh veggies from wherever you can get them cheap). Toss some water in with maybe 1/4 of the ramen seasoning, close the pouch up, and cook it for 10 minutes. The noodles get cooked and the veggies get steamed. We'd reuse the foil too.

My senior year of college, I basically lived off of split pea soup and lentil soup in the crockpot. They ranged from having lots of chopped veggies and turkey bacon in it to just being beans and a bullion cube.

Now that I'm trying to diet while being poor, I eat a whole lot of kale (99 cents for a huge bunch of them - easily 5 or 6 filling servings) and red lentils.


Try as I might, and I don't think I've ever had to resort to something traditionally weird because it's so easy to make "normal" things cheaply, once you know what you're doing (which most people, unfortunately, don't).

Rice is extraordinarily versatile. You can cook a hundred different meals with it- just throw in random spices and sauces...

When I was still going to college, I created the "manwich", which basically entails putting every little bit of leftovers between two slices of bread and eating it. Manwich because it makes you feel like a man when you've eaten it. Until it reaches the other end of your digestive tract. The very different ingredients with different digestive duration also ensure that it will come out in little pieces over a long period of time.

Once, in the middle of pizza baking (the cheap frozen type), the oven just died and I had a half frozen pizza on my plate; I was hungry and it was the last piece of digestible matter in my appartment. Let's just say "I survived it".

Shortbread in lots of milks, crunched and stomped, is still a favourite of me.

Old, stale bread fried in lots of oil, that I just ate once. It was so fatty it made me gag, and I had the worst heartburn for days after that.

Whatevers-in-the-kitchen-sandwich. Potentially makeable from anything (even the bread can be substituted) but one of my favorite versions was (going up from the bottom) slightly toasted bread+ bologna +sausage (removed from cold pizza usually) + doritos + ranch dressing + slightly toasted bread. A few times I used cheese instead of the ranch dressing, and some other kind of chip or crackers instead of doritos.
