I don't usually comment in the comic threads, but when I do, it's because I think Randall has done a wonderful throwback comic.

Edit: Is that bread from comic 993?

Their main form of payment is beach coins found with a metal detector while wearing blacks socks and white tennis shoes.

Questions the couple have:

1. Where's the proprietor?
2. Is this on the honor system?
3. How do we catch a gull?
4. How much do we pay for the gull once we catch it?
5. Do you suppose he has a license?
6. Who invested in this scheme?
7. Should we call the FTC?
8. Should we call the SEC?
9. Should we call the FBI?
.
.
.
N. Do you suppose we're on "Candid Camera"?

Wow, the style here seems a lot like some of the older comics. I don't really like the joke either, but the large comic and nice backgrounds captured my attention.

Awwww.

This reminds me of a story I was told by some Australian Air Force personel, about how easy it was to sell koalas to (drunk) visiting US military personel, fun for everybody observing, not so much fun for the goose who discovered koalas have big claws and grumpy attitudes. might not be true, but a funny story none the less.

oh and *edited just to mention how awful that kerning is on that sign, for shame beret guy, for shame.
it's fine.

That was probably the funniest XKCD I've read in a while! I loved it, and I'm not sure how others see it as being mediocre. Oh well, maybe that just shows how sideways my sense of humor is. :)

I really liked this one. Both the artwork and the ``style'' were very reminiscent of his earlier comics.

I wonder what xkcdsucks' response to this comic will be. They'll probably touch on how the art style is reminiscent of Randall's old art style to create a sense of nostalgia in order to cover up what would have been an otherwise boring and forgettable comic. The joke is one of those "LOL, I just had a random idea" jokes that was probably only funny when Randall first said it to himself. Etc etc etc.

Vaguely surrealist, I suppose. Not everyone's cup of fur. I dug it. I don't see how explaining could ever improve it, though.

There's something really beautiful about this comic. I don't think beret guy is actually trying to sell gulls here, it's more a completely random and spontaneous piece of art for people walking past.

At least until the bread is all gone ;)

This wasn't a 'Oh me yarm HILARIOUS' comic, nor was it intended to be. It's just really clever and well done. There was an honest smile on my face when I saw it, and that doesn't happen often.

Also, I think he just felt like showing he can actually draw. Well done on the beach, I like the detail in the waves.

I think it's even a bit self-referential: no big idea, but great execution, which holds true for the comic as well as the guy's business plan (I think he even realizes his idea is not really a hit, scratching his head in the last panel).

I don't really get the elevator joke, except that it stresses he doesn't know much about business.

oh, edit: just realized it's not the same guy at the end.

You know, this comic could stand up well with only the last panel...

The beautifully sketched rugged ocean scene with such an unexpected feature....heck, that would be a good mini poster all of its own.....

You two got it right.

This is wholeheartedly wrong, I don't know how many of you have firsthand experience with seagulls but if you throw food -even one moldy french fry- 50 to a 100 will show up and they will fight each other (to the death) over every molecule of it before flying off. It is possible that the seagulls ate untill they were full and can't fly from weight but I have never seen a seagull that has "eaten enough".

I hate seagulls, they took my sandwich.

I didn't find the joke all too funny, but the art was great. I can't believe I actually miss the colorless comics. Initially I thought it was great when Randall started consistently adding a little color.
