Ideally, an obscure variation of a common instrument. I have a thing for lower instruments, so maybe a flute d'amour or a bass recorder, or something of the like.

Seriously, youtube some Hang videos and tell me you don't want one right now. And then despair because they're impossible to get.

J/K I already know how to play the rockenspiel and tubular bells (they're called "chimes" on this side of the pond, though)

I was looking at trumpets as a gift for a friend a while ago, I couldn't believe how expensive they are. With most instruments you can go poor but decent enough quality second hand or something, but trumpets are just damn expensive.

If you think brass instruments are expensive, you have a rude awakening ahead of you. Woodwinds (good ones) are worse, and the classical string family can go off into the stratosphere.
I'm seeing top-end pro trumpets listing for 2 to 3 grand. That'll get you a semi-playable student cello if you're lucky. I've seen cello and violin bows going for over 20 grand!
Buffet-Crampon clarinets run 2 to 7 grand. I'm not even going to look at pro bassoons.

And to get the pipe organ you generally need to buy the cathedral around it.cjmcjmcjmcjm wrote:Contrabassoons, 5-octave marimbas, and grand pianos are about the top of the list, excluding famous violins sold at auction and pipe organs.
