Who resorts to personal attacks? Idiots, that's who. No, I'm much more interested in using insults to add spice to otherwise bland discussions, or as ironic counterpoint, or a host of other reasons. There isn't an insult powerful enough to express my utter contempt for anyone whose sole reason for not being swayed by an argument is my use of insults. For example, if I were to directly insult you by calling you a weak-minded fool with more interest in upholding antiquated cultural values than entering into an open and honest discussion, whilst simultaneously explaining the difference between substantive arguments and superficial elements and how the former carries more intellectual weight to anyone who holds rationalism in higher standing than tradition as an ends unto itself -- with a quick aside to claim that all who fit into the latter category was, in essence, a weak-minded fool with more interest in upholding antiquated cultural values than entering into an open and honest discussion -- and you were to respond by refusing to engage with me because I called you what this hypothetical version of you so clearly is -- namely, a weak-minded fool with more interest in upholding antiquated cultural values than entering into an open and discussion -- my only recourse would be to repeat what I have been saying all along (by now, you should have gotten the picture, but I have found it nearly impossible to underestimate the capacity for illogic some people have).

And if I have somehow insulted you directly in this post, as opposed to a hypothetical version of you more interested in good manners than good sense, I offer you my sincerest apologies.

Actually I was referring to Hawk, who did so at first. This back and forth between the intent and perception is clearly not going to go anywhere so I've attempted to let it run it's course with an apology and a promise to be clearer about my intentions in the future. There is nothing else I can do and if you want to crucify me for what you perceive me to believe versus what I've expressly disavowed, what can I do? Off with his head.

PhoenixEnigma - it's the change I don't like. When I was a kid, I had real thick hair. To the extent that it could clog even the best brands of hair trimmers.
I always mocked my brother for have a high hair line, despite him having thick hair too, because his forehead has always been much larger than mine.
Now suddenly, I've receded a little and thinned out A LOT on the top of my head.

Having my hair cut short is the only way to make it look decent, but I'm lazy and don't get it cut often enough - leaving me looking a bit silly.

Eventually, I'm going to have to either cut it ultra short, or remove it completely. I kinda look forward to HAVING to do that, because at least it's a solution.

Fuck change. Fuck getting older. Fuck baldness.

Get a beard trimmer and just go over it all on a low setting. As long as it's thinning evenly it will look fine. Just channel Captain Picard.

I am happy with the last few pages as it has shown just how much people care about the boythread, erstwhile ignored and repudiated as a base barrio of beards 'n' bacon.

Still a long way to go before it can become the man thread again, though.

It's true, originally when I started reading the recent pages I was upset that women had the privilege of a safespace thread, but then I flipped that right round and realised that it's clearly just because men think women don't have the emotional strength or maturity to handle a non-safespace thread of their own. Thank god for being a man.

Oh word. And there are also formal rules that say you shouldn't have hats inside. Usually fair to ignore, but when you invoke the magisterium of fancy hat, it can elicit awkwardness if you do this.

Great peskiness. But maybe you can power through it with sufficiently nice hat.

Hats are awesome. Sadly, I have a freakishly large head. It's basically impossible for me to buy a hat in a store and have it actually fit. Sure, I could special order them or buy them online, but that takes away quite a bit of the impulse "ooh, shiny!" aspect of such purchases for me.

I had this problem. I started losing hair when I was about 25, by 30 it was pretty clear what was going to happen. I always heard from hairdressers that the genes responsible come from the mother's side, I never met my mother's father but he had a full head of hair until he passed away, so I can only assume that his father or grandfather had the problem.

Anyway, yes you need to sort out regular haircuts (as I often fail to do), and also you could try growing a full, luxurious beard. Like mine. It totally helps.

"Never wear hats inside unless it's halloween or you're sporting some sort of physical anomaly." ...or you work in the food/packing industry.

It's like wearing sunglasses indoors -- there is just no need to do so. Personally I don't see "going bald" as a legit anomaly unlike some unsightly scar or being a chemo patient, but I say that as someone who's still rocking a full head of hair.

I still refute this. Most of my family on my Dad's side have the same thickness of hair as my Granddad, who hasn't gone bald at all and only went grey at about 55/60ish. The only variation between me and my Dad's side of my family's hair is straightness and colour. Only one of my uncles has gone grey before 55 and he still only went grey at 50ish and had blonde hair anyways. Also, if I remember my GCSE biology correctly, dominance and recessiveness shouldn't be affected by which family member they come from. It just seems like an old wives tale to me (and not one of the ones I believe in / make life better if you act like they're true).

If the genes thing is true I'll turn silver/gray at like 50 but never go bald. It's a happy medium I can accept.

Article about hats
tl;dr: Don't wear hat's inside unless you're on your way out or your way in. They'll look best with a suit and tie, that's just how it is. Try to make your hat functional, like a nice wool felt hat when it's raining or a Panama when it's hot and sunny. Wear a good hat, this is probably best achieved buying vintage hats as even the super expensive hats these days aren't made to previous standards. Be confident in your whole outfit, not just the hat. If you're not comfortable in the clothes you're wearing, you're not going to look comfortable with the hat.

To get the most sexy+hat out of one google image search, try "Johnny Depp hat"

I'd expand this to include any sort of costume-event, I think. If you're costuming, your dress is -- almost by definition -- going to be at least somewhat inappropriate for the venue. It's the same principle as chainmail generally not being appropriate attire for a stroll in the park, but being entirely appropriate for a LARPing even that happens to take place in your strolling-park.

Otherwise it's basically overwear, roughly equivalent to a coat or a scarf or anything else you'd generally take off when you're inside unless you're at least sort-of-costuming. And in the same vein, exceptions to the above also apply to hats -- if you're in an interior where you aren't expecting to stay long, or don't have a safe place to put things down, or whatever.
Have you given up?

Sure, I could special order them or buy them online, but that takes away quite a bit of the impulse "ooh, shiny!" aspect of such purchases for me.

I wear a 7 1/2 hat. Not sure that's a freakishly large but it's plenty large. The place that I got my hat had extra larges that fit nicely.

I wear a size 8. (And can get away with an 8 1/8.) XL sized hats are comically small on me. One-size-fits-all baseball caps ... don't. I actually did special-order my covers when I was in the Navy. While I was at OCS, I lived in terror that the DIs would learn my hat size. I was sure I would never hear the end of it if they did. :D
