Hi guys. Im a long time lurker and decided to activate an account in order to ask a question on a video that was forwarded to me by a friend. I figured that this would be the place to ask with the best chance of someone being around who knows a little bit about the subject of the video that I will link. The video is a time lapse of the sun, I believe its the SOHO craft. I have gone to the soho web page and tried to enter the dates of the event, and when I do I get the response that there is no data. The video is fairly short, about 3 and a half minutes. The jist of the video is evident from the first second though.

My first guess is that thing is weather.

Like a Tornado.

What looks like a sphere is the top of the storm. If, it is a Tornado, then, that sucker, sucks. It leaves a void that may look like a sphere when seen from the side.

Just a guess.

"Filaments, when you see them on the solar disc at certain wavelengths, they appear to be dark because they're cooler material in relation to what's in the background. When you see them on the edge of the sun we call them prominences but they're the same objects," Young said.

"They sit in this kind of tunnel called the filament channel so when you look at it from the edge of the sun, what you see is this spherical object and you're actually looking down the tunnel."

Thanks D.B., that is convincing. Fwiw, there are a couple other videos that are related that show the same eruption in different lighting and one showing the "detachment" if you will, that is pretty amazing. Looks like a giant jellyfish swimming off.
