Evil Auction
Spoiler:
I'm surprised that someone else bid for lone collector, let alone risking 82 energy on it (for those keeping score I bid 85 and won). On the plus side there is a shitload of powers, so hopefully I'll get something good. I've got my fingers crossed (which makes typing difficult (bad-dum-tish)) for attention seeker. I like the idea of being a subtle version of a jester, especially because my role win condition is 'survive'.
On a vaguely related note, it seems I was the only one to submit flavour with my roles.

Evil Auction:
Spoiler:
Wow, I am surprised one of the powers I submitted was actually used, (inexpedient cop) with only changes to clarify wording, and adding in an energy cost, I'm guessing that the other two I submitted weren't used because the first was overpowered or too complicated, and the second wouldn't apply as there are no miller or godfather powers in this game. I am really excited about this game, and I am hoping having set my cutoff at 160 energy (which I would only have less than if I won all of my power bids) leaves me enough energy to survive at least day 1, but I probably shouldn't be so surprised that one of my power suggestions was included, as there are 32 powers from the suggestions of 11 players, so everyone else had, on average, 3.1 of their powers used, I feel relatively non-contributive :( I think if the person who gets the power groucho chooses what "secret word" to go with based on wanting to get 20 energy every day, they would probably do something like make the word be scummy, and then describe people as simply suspicious, to avoid losing 50 energy for using their own word, I can't really think of anything else worth mentioning at this time, except sorry if this was kind of hard to follow (and for the excessively run-on sentence).

I just checked it. I think it applies to underworld, but it could reference evil auction as well. It doesn't say much of any consequence as relates to EA, not sure about underworld as I haven't been following it much.

Re: The Gojoe Memorial Mafia Discussion Thread

Postby Krong » Tue Mar 20, 2012 4:45 am UTC

As mod, I choose to post the first spoiler.

Reminder to all players in Political Parties Mafia: YOU CANNOT READ THIS SPOILER!

Political Parties:
Spoiler:
Just in case anyone didn't get it, let's skip down a ways....

...that should be enough.

I fully expect the most important parties in this game to be Bear and Bird. They are definitely the most useful for town, while the others are much more situational. In fact, I'd be very surprised if all parties make an appearance. At least a couple might be used by scum as a finishing move -- for instance, going to Monkey to wipe out Turtle or Bear. There are more parties than are strictly necessary just so people won't *have* to be independent as parties get used up; they'll just get crappier powers instead.

EP looked through the draft version of the party powers to try to find any breaking strategies. (Thanks again!) I erred on the side of giving town too little power rather than too much. For instance, the bear party rule about not killing bear members is there to prevent the town from just packing into bear and getting two lynches, as that makes the game boring and a bit slanted towards a town win. EP was fine with a double lynch as he pointed out town can just demand that potential lynchees get out of bear... I think that's true in theory, but it would be fun to see it in practice.

Basic thoughts:

Bear: Obviously town wants this around, but the more people who join it the less useful it is. Plus mafia has tons of incentive to join, which makes membership there suspicious. Should be interesting.

Rabbit: Situational only. Could be a good way for town to dislodge a suspicious person from Bear, or for Mafia to suddenly dissolve a party.

Monkey: Situational only. If somehow town loses Bear or Bird early, it's a way to get it back. Otherwise, a good finisher for Mafia.

Turtle: A doctor power seems useful, right? Well, if a single mafia member is there to spy, there's zero chance it prevents a kill. However, could still be useful to protect the recipient of the cop result.

Bird: A fairly strong cop ability that has a potential to confirm townies. However, if mafia knows who's getting the result, they could end up dead before they have a chance to say anything.

Fish: A little extra vote never hurt nobody. Except for maybe a The Cheat.
... probably not going to see much use, sadly, though I'd be highly interested in seeing some of the more experienced town players use it as a mason ability. There's also no requirement that its membership stay hidden... townies using it can just straight-up admit it.

I think I'll need to explain what the whole Inactive/Active/Dissolved thing is about with some examples... I'll get around to that when people have had a chance to look things over a bit.

Come to think of it, I'm not sure if that "need 3 to a party" is right... 2 makes more sense. Bahh. I'll look into it.

Doing the powers really did take the entire length of time between the end of bid and start of day post. That was truly a nightmare...

This is one super spreadsheet I got going to track all this. I dread now having to deal with all these powers over the course of the game.

Hopefully, people die quickly and the load gets lightened! :P

Evil auction
Spoiler:
So I've got a handful of powers that I probably won't be using. Inexpedient cop and scouter both cost energy to activate and don't tell me much useful. Bribe will be an interesting judgement call, I'm thinking about using it to make myself look like weak town to draw in some doctor protection. Crooked politician will be useful if I'm going to be lynched.

OK, I'm scum. Finally. I've gone for the turtle party so we'll be able to avoid the doctor protect.

Political Parties:

Spoiler:
I am town if anyone cares. This game seems like it will start off in favor of town, but if there's enough Independents/Fish Partiers, it 's going to be confusing to figure out what's going on. My main idea right now is to tell Townies to only let Bird/Cop and Turtle/Doctor use their powers, at the very least on D1. If any other power is used, town can assume the party who used it has at least 2 mafia in it and should be lynched.

Evil Auction:

Spoiler:
Doh! I put a bid in the wrong row and it messed things up pretty good. Thankfully, only three players were impacted by the need for a role revision in order to correct it. There are some bids that if assigned in mistake could damn near of meant I'd have to start from scratch since they dictated so many other conditions allowing for others to win a power.

I think this is a mistake. In regular mafia the weakest scum just gets lynched early. In resistance scum needs every spy to pull their weight. Scum chat lets the stronger players give advice to the weaker players making a more even game. If everyone where an experienced player no chat would be fine, but in our environment with always having a few noobs there needs to be scum chat. Personally I'd go the other way and allow spy chat at all times.

The # of rejections shown is a huge part of the board game (e.g., we did mission 1 and two guys rejected it, Gee Willikers), but the spy chat thing ensures that will never happen online because you can set up a simple alphabetical system. I didn't really like that aspect of the game being completely thrown out.

Ok, I've added Keys to the Kingdom Mafia at the bottom of the queue - at the rate it moves, it'll probably go into sign-ups about mid-year, so whoever wants to co-mod and/or play should probably start tracking the books down now!
