Yes, it's like a split into two timelines (which is established as also duplicating the person) except for some reason both of the resulting branches are real and accessible from each other. Terezi's coin flip is the best way of thinking about it.
...Ahem. That's. Actually pretty much exactly how the universe in Homestuck works. If >Gamzee: Fondly regard motherfucking miracles. is ever a thing, you heard it here first.
It's still better explained/consistent than the majority of existing sci-fi and fantasy, and it is possible if you read enough to know what's going to happen (the meteor duplication theory and Roxy/Dirk in future theory have been around for a while). I can take some making stuff up as long as a lot is consistent and there's foreshadowing.
...Anyway. Also an interesting implication is, how do Dirk and Roxy even know who their 'parents' are? They lived in Jane and Jake's time, apparently, so unless they somehow managed to live 400 years (not out of the question >_>), they can't ever have known them. Did they guess? Were they told? How are they alive, anyway?
If Roxy is anything like Rose she has ways of knowing stuff she shouldn't. Besides that they have access to a lot of fancy tech (appearifier, cross-timeline chat) and probably some kind of history archive. As to how they are alive it should be explained when we see them again. Crocker's motivation seems not to be to kill the kids outright but make their session entry hard, I'd like to know why she's acted like this though.
