Doctor Who is planned considerably further ahead of time than I would have thought.
Also, next series will be 14 episodes spread over 2 years? So we're only getting 7 episodes per year for the next 2 years? DAMN. That sucks.

You're assuming that British tv shows always air at the same time of day. They generally manage the same day, but exact times often vary.Diadem wrote: By the time you've adapted to a schedule where you follow a series, it's already over.

I guess you are right. Many British tv series have very short seasons. Though Doctor Who never did, until now.
Why is that though? I'm no expert on British culture, but I assume a year there lasts 52 weeks as well. Isn't a 46 week summer break somewhat on the long side?
US series usually seem to have 20-30 episodes per season. I already think that's rather short - only half the year. But with just 6 episodes it's hardly worth it following a series at all. By the time you've adapted to a schedule where you follow a series, it's already over. Might as well ignore the season, download all episodes at once after they are all broadcast, and treat it as an extended movie.

Well, not really. Sherlock episodes are 1.5 hours long, and the times between are variable. It was 15 months between series one and series 2: November 2010 - January 2012. And they don't plan on filming series three until early 2013. Which has pros and cons:
- PRO: Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch are filming The Hobbit and There and Back Again, so we want them to be focused on that.
- PRO: Moffat is devoting all of 2012 to thinking about the 50th anniversary next November, so we have a slight hope he won't fuck it up.
- CON: With post-production, etc, we probably won't be getting Sherlock's next 3 episodes until Summer 2013, if that. Which is 18 months after the last series. And that isn't exactly a huge problem, except for the fact that when we hit 12 months last time things got a little . . . scary in the fandom. Everything was a bit disturbingly manic.
Still, at least we probably don't have to wait three years for John to find out. I hope.

you know, if they are going to make the seasons so much shorter, I wish they'd change to a half hour format, give us 10x half hour episodes (5x 2 parters, or maybe a couple of 3 or 4 parters) instead of 5x 45 min ones, that would mean more cliffhangers, and a little bit extra dialogue to pad out the episodes.

Wait, so you're in favor of extra cliffhangers? When I finished watching "The Almost People" (S6E6)Spoiler:
