1042: "Never"

Mouseover caption: I'll never forget you--at least, the parts of you that were important red flags.

Looks like Randall's channeling A Softer World today. Although I wonder why he didn't go all the way and make it actually look like A Softer World.

Is it bad kerning if it looks like there's nothing to kern?

I think we can let him slide on the kerning. Pass it off as stylized.

This seems like a copy of a previous xkcd comic. Same punchline. I don't quite feel like searching through 1000 of them though.

Similar theme and tone to some others we've seen before:
Why Do You Love Me?
In The Trees
I had a feeling there were more recent ones as well; still looking :)
Edit: Ah! Wasteland
Nowhere is also related, but let's face it, riding on a dinosaur would be pretty awesome.
Falling Asleep
Finished going through the list now. And it's 3pm, I should probably go and get some lunch...

It would have elicited a slight chuckle, bearing as much resemblance to some previous comics as it does, had Randall not pulled it straight out of my head. With pliers. Maybe.

So I lol'd.

I agree on the first two, but I thought Wasteland was different. I thought Stick Figure was trying to forget about someone he loved/cared about, not some one who he wanted to forget because he disliked them.

I thought Wasteland was more like "Forgetting"

Is it sad that so many forum topics since Kerning has had someone make a negative comment about the kerning of the comic, while so few of the topics before Kerning did? It's really a shame that Randall's kerning has gotten so much worse since he made a comic about it.

Well not just romantic relationships. Almost any relationship gone south, basically.

Fair enough. I think Wasteland is a little bit more ambiguous though.

The stick figure is looking at his own reflection while saying these things. Is this about a paired relationship, or the end of narcissism?

I think I like this interpretation best.

Later that month, something out there in the stars was pulled towards him. It twisted and squeezed and tried to cram itself into a passably humanoid form, keeping up the charade for far longer than even it would have though possible. There were slips, of course, which Stick Guy picked up on as little oddities in his overall strange love. The occasional stumbles into vastly differing national accents. The odd muscle twitches where no muscles should be dense enough to noticeably distend the skin. The quiet scrape of a skin sampling machine when the creature presumed him to be asleep...

Haha, I like this one. I don't get how people say it's depressing, most people who have ever tried romance have made a mistake and chosen the wrong person, and my first relationship was definately one of those people. It's just a fact of life that romance is a lot more complicated than anyone assumes at first and thus, mistakes are made, and it's not sad or depressing, it's just something we've got to accept and laugh at because hahaha she was a crazy bitch and how on earth did I not know that

no regret, just laugh at your past self because he's a moron :D

There were some serious problems with Randall's handwriting before the Kerning comic, and people did complain about it. The difference is that people didn't call it a "Kerning problem". They just called it bad handwriting, which it is.

The worst thing is that the typographic problem in the Kerning comic isn't even with kerning at all.

You're not wrong, technically, except that few people actually talk like that, and the ones who do probably wouldn't end their sentence with a preposition like you just did.

I don't think there has been a comic that's hit home as close to this one before. Oh past relationships.. While I remember being miserable, I'm quite glad they happened though. The lessons learned have led to quite a happy relationship now. =]

He's not wrong about that either, despite what those grammar snobs think. It's a myth that you can't end a sentence with a preposition. The only time it is frowned upon or could be considered incorrect is when the preposition is superfluous. In "...whom I build a life with," the "with" is necessary and okay. It is usually preferable to construct a sentence with the least amount of grammatical gymnastics possible, even if it means ending a sentence with a preposition (which is fine) or--gasp--splitting an infinitive (which, shockingly, is also fine if it would mean having to completely reconstruct the sentence in an awkward way).

You're probably correct about them refusing to end a sentence with a preposition, as it seems that most grammar snobs actually don't understand English grammar as well as they think they do. They're the same people who insist on correcting people when they say, "I'm good," even though it's more correct than saying, "I'm well." (Unless you are referring specifically to your health, of course.)

Assholes.
