Ahh, 4chan. You contribute so much to the internet culture, just like a coal-burning plant produces much for the atmosphere.

I already have lots of stories to tell my youngins when I have hair growing out of my ears and I am all old and stuff.

"You kids have it easy today! If I wanted to trash someone's social networking profile, I had to embed inline javascript into an actionscript openurl call that launched lastrestort in a 1x1 pixel flash object and post it in a comment!"

"Back in my day, we all worked in flatland, we didn't have a metaverse-reality-overlay, and we liked it, damnit!"

what do you mean "GOING to have?" already does.

once, my college roommate and i tricked our other roommate into looking at goatse. repeatedly. from the other room. we kept disguising the link, and he just. kept. clicking. it.

it much, much more amusing when you can hear the disgusted screams of your target.

In order to be recursive the G has to stand for Goatse.

Goatse
Overwhelms
All
Tortured
Souls
Everywhere

I'm fortunate enough to have missed out on both of those wonderful phenomena. I mainly liked the "don't say we didn't warn you" mentality of the alt-text in this one

Best comic in a while.... Other than the mental trauma.

***runs off to find the brainscrubber

It makes a good point, though. With the pace of technology where new things get old so quickly, but also old things get recorded so easily and completely (wikiwhat?), nostalgia is going to have some odd parents in the future.

BTW, anyone know a BBS with a good Tradewars game going? My old BBS has a bunch of jerks logging on twice a day and getting extra turns. They're ruining it for everyone.

Google "goatse" and "tubgirl" and you'll see what we mean.

I wonder; will this page soon be the number one result on Google for people searching for goatse if we keep this discussion open for a while?

I'm going to come, find you, and do unspeakable things to you... For making me lose twenty dollars and my self respect, I was on a roll. :p

As a side note: Luckily, I have gotten to the point where I can talk or hear about Goatse and not picture it, I thought it was impossible.

NO. Not unless we manage to take 4chan offline.

Not, mind, that that would be a bad thing in and of itself.

That said... This comic hits head-on the consequences of Living In the Future.

I'm 22, and I have a noticeable generation gap with 20 year olds. They entered College immediately after Web 2.0 hit, and thus were socialized to Facebook & Friends from the very beginning; I came in right before, and hence my attitudes toward social interaction in college solidified first. Many aspects of their mindset are completely alien to me as a consequence.

Eh, /b/ colors people's conception of 4chan too much. I post in 4chan regularly, (but stay the fuck away from /b/) and really, except for /b/, it's just a slightly more anarchic than usual website dedicated to general discussions and porn.

On the other hand, I've actually had a discussion like this comic with my dad. It's true: the 30 year gap between him and me really does put me into another world entirely.

I got it and decided, perhaps because I'm too full of caffeine, to google "distended anus" anyway. I was treated to a colonoscopy picture that for some reason included a bottlecap. Thanks, xkcd :)

Maybe because she looks like she's enjoying it?

She's also physically repulsive to boot, unlike the Goatse guy.

So, I guess I just got Rickrolled... I'm just thankful it was some harmless singer instead of a distended anus (which thankfully I've never seen).

It's only shocking the first couple hundred times. After that you develop an immunity, and can't be fazed by anything at all. "oh look, four gay old men having an orgy... boooooring."

I'm as hardcore Anon as any other Anon out there, but PLEASE keep /b/ in /b/! Or at least off xkcd! haha

Also, I agree with Maurog. If /b/ has had any positive effect on my life, it's that I'm no longer squeamish about bodily fluids of any type. Every now and then there's something new that literally makes me gag, but for the most part I am desensitized.

And lastly, /b/ and 4chan are not interchangeable. If 4chan is a banana, /b/ is the brown spot covering everything but the tips.
Lotta sad Joes out there. Stalin killed people to ease his mind, Smith married a buncha girls, and Comeau draws a webcomic.
