Hi. I'm Leaf... been on the fringe of computer forums since the Old Dialup BBS days... I was one of the two owners of the Emerald Glade dialup back in 1992-oh... whenever the internet kinda shut us all down. (No, I don't think it was on purpose... it just kinda happened that the internet went public and BBSes became archaic.)

I have no icon yet, though I am working on it.

I'm a girl geek, into role playing games, comics, bad sci fi, good modern fantasy, webcomics, cars, trains, Rush and other Prog Rock (well, ok, music in general).... and lots of other stuff I won't bore you with just yet. Mostly posting to say hi, I am an actual person not a spambot. ::waves:: Hi!

Hi,
um ...
first time caller, long time listener....

is this on?

hello?

So my first comic was probably Pillow Talk ( 69 ) given as a link since I am a software engineer, and we find Bellman-Ford something that you just end up talking about ( Information Science applies to real life, I'm serious! Hello? Hello? ... ) can't remember when I started catching every update.

Been on these intertubes for a while.
As for my handle it was chosen on purpose, guided by the hard hard character limit in Diablo 1. ( Yeah, I know that dates me )

Personal Fact: I start reading webcomics, forget about them and find them 2 years later and read the entire intervening archive in a day. ( see: Bobbins, Girl Genius, PBF )

Hey,

here comes the belated introduction of myself:
I'm Simon, 25, from Germany, studying comp sci at the moment (yes, really) and am mainly interested in web development and music (mostly progressive rock).

Other web comics I like include Order of the Stick, Legostar Galactica, Elftor and Kopozky.

Thanks for your attention. ;)

Hi. I am not a spambot, I am a less-hairy ape. I'm 26 and I've just started back to college after not doing that for a long time. I like to learn stuff and I think curiosity is sexy. I play rock n' roll music with a geetar and sounds come out my mouth. I especially like wind and chasing small animals.
My first internet community that I became entangled with was that of zefrank's "theShow". I'm kind of afraid that these forums will start eating my life in the same way that place did.
Rock to all of you.

Yo. I'm Belgernon, a 20 year old in the Dallas area. Been reading xkcd for a little over a year, and loved every minute of it. I'm an Arts & Technology student at the University of Texas at Dallas.

I'm a science geek, food lover, and pun maker. I swear I'm not nearly as boring as I seem. :D

Hello, I'm a longtime lurker that is just now delurking and being brave!

Let's see... I'm a girl, I like books and art and interesting things, including xkcd, and there was a fire drill in my dorm just as I was about to register. I think there's something evil that wanted to stop me. Or just turn my fingers in to blocks of ice. So I shook my fist in its face and registered anyway.

Hi. :)

I spam not, for I am no spambot.

I don't do much actual avenging any more. Do you have any idea how little wear and tear a spun-zinc costume can take? And the price for repairs is just ridiculous, I tell you.

Hi,
Im not a spambot,
I was just wondering if it were possible for spambots to spawn more spambots...or even converge to create new ones..maybe a standard for spambots so that they may produce descendants?

Hey, I'm a college student who also helps develop a CMS for a small internet company, so I dabble in web interface design, coding for LAMP, etc... (and xkcd's comic are very popular in the office!)

I'm into music production and I pretend to be a decent photographer.

Sunny Auckland, the place where dreams are made of. That is, if your dreams happen to include pollution, over-population and traffic congestion.

Haha yeah, the demons make my bones big and strong. I've always wanted to go to Nelson but never made it further south than Wellington. I guess I've always been afraid of what lay beyond the strait, you know? It's a mystery. I guess mysteries have always scared me ever since the magician from my fifth birthday party asked me to find his rabbit. It wasn't a rabbit. :(

Authenticating...

Postby Benitosimies » Fri Sep 21, 2007 3:40 am UTC

My main reason for posting here is because it is mandatory to post in this thread 'first'. I suppose you can count my other 3 or so posts as ... -2, -1, 0... and this as my first post. Or however many posts I had.

My interests are a few tabletop roleplaying games. I'm a student at a catholic college but I'm not catholic. I like a few things that I have written on my space and I am burned out on writing down all the things I'm interested in.

I'll have you know I am indeed a bad bad person, but it really has little to do with the fact that I made two posts before coming here to do the intro. No, that owes more to my relentless impatience (offset by my sparklingly relentless optimism) and my affection for the double X 52% of the population. So, viz:

Hi all. Long time-ish reader, third time poster. Finding the forums here was a minor joy, rated much the same as that first discovery of MST3K--that sense of "hey, I think I know these people!" I am older than everyone I meet thinks, which is okay for two reasons: One, I think people are defined more by their last sea-change or epiphany, and my last one happened when I was 26 so that's how old I continue to feel; and two, since I was seven I have believed that I was going to live forever, a circumstance which renders age nearly irrelevant.

With regard to the second point, I recommend without reservation that everyone here should read Ray Kurzweil's The Singularity is Near. I saw him speak on PBS and bought his book as a bit of a lark, only to have it absolutely justify the aforementioned belief I have held since my youth. As an added bonus for the XKCD faithful, it is full of medium to higher order math. I have come to think of it as a sort of bible, something I have lacked since DS9 ended and I could no longer visit Space Church.

My greatest disappointments are that I am a significantly better editor than writer, that I tend to not so much read books as collect them, and that Stuart Adamson killed himself before I got to see Big Country play live.

Still, there are so many good things. Here's the short list:
XKCD
Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin
The Year of Silence by Madison Smartt Bell
The entirety of Futurama, particularly "The Luck of the Fryrish" and "Jurassic Bark."
Diesel Sweeties
Cowboy Bebop and Last Exile
Invader ZIM
Pocky
and of course Bare Naked Ladies

Oh, forgot to mention that I graduated from Speed Scientific with a Bachelor of Engineering Science in Computer Science, then went back to school for four more years in pursuit of a second degree in English which I abandoned after a brief fling with a long-legged poetry and literature aficionado. So have at you, your infinite series and directed integrals scare me not. Plus, I know how to talk to women. Nyah.

Also: Hello there, ladies.

See? It's easy.
Touché, you smartass.

Cause I got in trouble

Postby DAVINA » Fri Sep 21, 2007 11:20 pm UTC

Things I like to do: post before intro

Things I don't like to do: read rules

I'm 27, live in Southern CA, waste time, play sports, drink in the garage while playing guitar with a few friends, and work when I absolutely have to.

I'm here because this comic calls out to my inner autistic, anal-retentive, immature, too-smart-for-my-own-good teenager.

I go by names like 'Stealth' and 'The Dropper' which were all given to me during long nights with Captain Morgan.

I have a slight obsession with the East Coast.

I have 2 insanely cool pets. I would say 'the 2 coolest' but as to my knowledge, a competition to determine such things does not exist, so to insinuate would be asinine.

I am a girl, and I like girls, which people either find really awesome, or really gross. Take your pick, I don't care.

Contrary to how I sound so far, I'm actually really funny, easy-going, mellow, open-minded and respectful...my sense of humor is just a little dry. Like toast.

I love to meet new people, so say hi. I will talk to anyone, about anything. If nothing else, you like me for the simple fact that you won't have to worry about crossing any boundaries...I don't have any.

I am not that great with computers. But my brother and my cousin are. So I threaten them with bodily harm when I need something done on my comp. And in return, they get nothing.

Now I have 2 posts, so we can move on with life.......

What a nice little community you have here. Interesting enough to make me register on a forum for the first time since the college years. I've done lots of lurking, but I feel like I should try to contribute once in a while :)

I was a Math/CS major in college, went on for a master's, and now I work in a cubicle. Could be a lot worse. Besides, it gives me time to waste here!

Hi there. I work in a mecca of geeks and nerds with a fair selection of each; I found the comic (and subsequently the forum) through the method of clicking on a link in a coworkers away message.

I joined because.. Erm.. Well, people with a sense of humor demonstrated by what I've read so far are the kind of people with whom I would like to interact.

Hi, I'm Dan, I'm 18, I'm kinda taking a year off before college next year. I think that geeks are the world's greatest people. Even if they are occasionally vicious when they get to be anonymous. I have random projects sometimes. I have been reading xkcd for a while, and I find it utterly relatable, even if I don't understand all of the programming and math jargon.

I live in cambridge, ma, and just started reading xkcd after a link from SA brought me here. Good shit.

I'm a 22 year old net admin with a degree in network engineering. Trying to kick my career off while in cambridge, we'll see how that goes.

Pic of me is in the pics thread.

I use linux. hmmm... can't really think of anything else for now.
