1054: "The Bacon"

ALT TEXT: Normally pronounced 'THEH-buh-kon', I assume..

I hope to many people are grizzling about the puns in this comic.

I prefer the 5-second films take on it.

It wouldn't surprise me a bit if it turned out Vicodin was made from bacon.

What can't bacon do? For a start:

Tango with a dark-eyed stranger in the basement of an after-hours club in Paris
Write a four-volume parody of Gödel, Escher, Bach in blank verse
Play trumpet in a mariachi band, and really make it sound right
Brew a decent IPA
Prove Fermat's last theorem
Quit heroin

And, of course,
Your mom.

Brew a decent IPA

if you're brewing an IPA you're a chump. If you can't brew an IPA you just cant brew.

instructions for brewing an IPA:

step 1- Find a decent pale ale recipe

step 2- quadruple the total IBUs

step 3- wait you want more?

step 4- no really, that's all there is.

step 5- ummm...

step 6- alright, i quit

Now if you had said a really well crafted English Brown or maybe a good Irish red then we'd be talking.

I guess Randall must have been browsing Wikipedia, and found out there is a drug named "thebacon" and thought "Hey, that sounds just like \"the bacon\"! Let's make a joke about that!"

While I certainly don't agree with everything they say, you're making it quite easy for xkcdsucks here IMHO.

Someone saw an opportunity for a pun, and then went on to make the pun. THAT'S OUTRAGEOUS!!

Seriously, I think we need to take a long hard look at what's going on in the internet nowadays. Standards are slipping.

People are obviously making a pig's ear out of humour.

As a student of non-rational epistemologies, I'm curious as to the process by which you go from "I guess" (something entirely made up from the swirling little puddle between your ears) to "Randall must" (a claim of absolute necessity about a part of reality that is not you.)

On a scale of 1 to kumquats, I'd say your statement is up there with "All I know is it's called the Bill of Rights, not the Bill and Steve of Rights." But despite lacking any semblance of rationality, there is a definite pattern to statements such as yours, which suggests it may be possible to eventually understand them, and, in the fullness of time, cure you.

Reminds me of, http://xkcd.com/169/ but then most of xkcd does.

Also something that irks me, I read the passage under the comic as being the right hand guy's thoughts at a later date, like he is re-calling this event, but then the confusion wouldn't have been there as he would have heard thebacon said and not had to have read it himself. So that's where I think the ALT text comes in, again right hand guy's thoughts, which suggests that the speaker didn't pronounce it right but instead pronounced it as 'the bacon' in which case maybe he meant the bacon as you are meant to assume at the start. But then that means thebacon as a drug doesn't come into the situation at all. Hmmm...

If you have to explain a joke, there is no joke.

That's why I like to preemptively bring up the Hutterites in casual conversation, and explain the history behind the movement, who they are, and their general worldview and convictions. That way later people can "get it" when I tell my Jabba joke ("What do you call an obese pacifist Anabaptist gangster who lives on a commune in Montana and feeds people to a Rancor?")

The lower text is not an explanation, it is the punch line. The text in the panel is "the setup". The lower text is the punch line.

If the first text was sufficient in itself, it would be a double entendre.

That's how I saw it too, but I kind of feel the alt text, whilst normally a secondary punch line or gag, feels like an explanation.

The panel is a double entendre on "thebacon". But no one knows what that is, so he has to explain it with the caption text. This is a case where the joke shouldn't have left the notebook.

So, first reaction: if the bacon is a drug, there's less stress if you don't bring it home, but sell it somewhere and bring the dough home.

Second reaction: oh, opioid = no stress. Plus, if duly prescribed by doctor, not illegal, which would eventually contribute to stress.

Third reaction: for f#ck's sake, just fry some actual bacon.

Then I realized I was taking my inability to bond with this pun out on an otherwise harmless strip and fetched some chocolate.
