New York area meetup??

I'd probably go, if by NY you mean NYC, since I am pretty much just itching for an excuse to make a trip (any trip) to my favorite city. I live near NYC too, so it's not like it would be that inconvenient.

Although it'd be a little awkward, since strangers intimidate me.

Do you have any ideas of what the meetup would be? (I think of NYC as packed with people and generally expensive stuff.) Thoughts: a park and/or a specific spot in Central Park, then hit up some nearby museums. High culture FTW.

Beacon's Closet? It's this really cheap (my favorite word), but good-quality, clothing store in Brooklyn, which my friend tells me is completely awesome. We were going to go, but we kind of got distracted and ended up at Coney Island instead...

Anyways, we could meet at the steps of the Met. I actually have yet to go into the Met, since every time I've gone to NYC planning to peruse the awesome art, I and my friends have been foiled.

I hate cheese...so I hate mac'n'cheese by extension? Although the concept itself is awesome.

Honestly the best time for me would be sometime during winter session, Jan 2 - Feb 8, because this semester is turning out to be insane and I'd rather not die. During winter session I am taking extremely easy classes and could probably manage to get away for a weekend. However that may be too far away (or too cold, as NYC is, er, kind of icky in the winter) so I would see what I could do for any other recommended days.

Well, there's ice skating at Rockefeller or general city-stomping. We could all go see Spamalot (those tickets have to to be cheaper by now, right?). I'm sure there's something...also, my aunt lives on west 37th street (garment district) so she's pretty familiar with the area and could maybe help us out. However her place is really not big enough for a ton of people (although it is stocked with a bunch of wacky things). Hmmph. I don't really have time to think about this at the moment but... silly weather!

We had a couple of NYC meetings organized over Facebook for incoming students at my college. While we had the benefit of Central Park in the summertime, there are plenty of places in the city we could meet up. We could all go see Bodies, or some other museum-type spot.

i visit NYC quite often and i can tell you to CHECK THE SCHEDULES before going to a museum. often they have a speaker or something very interesting that a mob of people is going to show up for...

so unless you want to wait for 1.5 hours outside in the cold, check museum scheds.

in all honesty, i suggest waiting until the new coney island is done before a nyc meetup. they're building a new amusement park there and i think it would be AWESOME to all meet there.

It might be interesting to go sneak about Coney Island in various stages of deconstruction as well. I wanted to go up for its last weekend but I was busy. =( Oh well! I actually think this would be fun. Although, cold. There is always that cold factor.

Also, does 6flags even run in the winter? Somehow I doubt it.

But I have not ridden a proper rollercoaster all summer. I am very much due. So I'm up for that anyway!

I know a couple of interesting bars in the village that might serve as good meetup/ice-breaking locations. The SMAC idea sounds awesome too.

Also, we might want to stick away from bars as not everyone here is old enough to get into them.

And since no one's really stepped up to the plate to suggest a date yet... how about November or March? Or both? One soon-ish so that those that are jones'in to hang out with some cool kids can do so, and then the one in March when it starts to warm up some?

Good point about bars-- I keep on forgetting that I am no longer the youngest person in the universe.

I see several people in this thread who seem to have conflicts in November... a meetup would probably be best coming right after the winter holidays. I vote mid-January. Fortunately, I lead a pretty aimless existence, so pretty much any other time works for me as well.

The only reason I suggested November is for kids (like me) that are really eager and have a spare weekend or whatever to hang out in the city. Seeing as how I make a monthly trip up to the city it's no big deal for me, but if no people want to or no one can, that's cool.

December is out for obvious reasons.

And I know some kids didn't want to come up here while it was so cold so that's why I threw March out into the mix.

No one's done anything to lay out a final day or anything so I figured I'd throw something out there.

But if kids wanna meet up in January, I'm down with that too... it just can't be the last weekend since that's Boy's birthday and we'll be celebrating.

I'll throw in a vote for the Met. I'm an hour and a half-ish by the LIRR, weekends are best. Any time of year sans summer session, when I go home. (Which is far out of the NY area range.)
