I love how the characters have aged. That is so rare in cartoons.
(it is on now, and I am missing it, because someone in my dorm lost the key to the t.v. room.)
Even (if not more so) in serious cartoons, (anime, Groening, and such), characters tend to be pretty static, but here they've changed clothes, hair and that. It still kind of sticks with the wearing the same thing everyday, but at the same time there's an apparant level of change.

Just watched "The Headband," and I gotta say that it was definitely up there on my list of favorite episodes. It did a great job of showing the effects of propaganda, a cult of personality, and rabid nationalism on the society -- without beating you over the head with it, IMHO.

And, of course, Aang and Katara dancing was cute (and caused hordes of "Avatards" to foam at the mouth).

I don't like the processing they put the dialogue through. It's too flat. Some of the voice actors are pretty good, the animation is good, and the silliness is good. While the world/setting is somewhat original, the overall plot doesn't seem terribly interesting. The characters are well done so far. I'm on the fifth episode and I will keep watching.

And every now and then I laugh out loud, so that's good.

Pretty awesome show, though in a recent poll, 3% of people said they watched it, 14% said they'd never heard of it, 80% said "No, I don't watch it thankyouverymuch now let me go watch things that aren't that because I don't watch it," and 6% said told me that I don't understand statistics.

Katara is supposed to be around 14? Aang is 12 (112 technically).

But since they've done one at the end of each episode....perhaps all season 'cept for the finale? That would be luvverly.

I kind of hate it when Katara gets all sanctimonious on everyone. She really doesn't think things through when she decides that she has to help someone (in other words, loses her head since she's relying solely on her heart), and although it's admirable that she's so caring, they do have a bigger mission that she jeopardizes every time she does this.

What I want to know is, when will Aang start learning firebending? And who will he be learning from? Will Jeong Jeong be making another appearance? Can't wait for the next episode.

Those shorts are so adorable. Love them.

Me and Jordan were talking, and while the episodes have been okay so far, don't they all seem a little bit filler-ish? Like they'd fit more into the atmosphere of the first season?

The White Lotus is something I was hoping for -- and it's nice to see it have a comeback.

It's also quite nice to have a Sokka episode. He really does get the short end of the stick (well, except for Toph who isn't focused on nearly enough... by the way, Toph was very cute! Very fun to see her feelings toward Sokka, and her giddy excitement about bending "space earth.")

Hopefully next episode we'll get to see Iroh bring the beatdown on that prison guard.

While Iroh is indeed full of badassery, I kinda wished he had used his superior wily old guy persuasion and diplomacy skills to secretly finds allies amongst fellow prisoners/ prison guards. Unrealistic I guess since he's by himself but more to his style. He'd be like a Vetinari-like person having contacts everywhere reporting back to him in his cell.

Also, Sokka definitely needs more air-time. Just sayin' is all.

Also, White Lotus Society = awesome.

Okay, I've been watching a few episodes every other night or so, and am most of the way through the second season. The show has gotten better as it went along, and I don't think it's just that it's growing on me. The fight choreography is fantastic and the plot is very good. I am still somewhat put off by some of the voice acting, Zuko in particular. Iro and Toph are aweseomesauce. I can't wait until I catch up and can go through the thread opening the spoiler tags.

Well, do we know it's not genetic? I mean, there's got to be something to the fact that Sokka simply cannot bend while Katara can. Maybe they got different genes or something. The only info for the origins of bending we have sound like legends, with the Airbenders learning it from the flying bison, the Earthbenders learning it from badger-moles (Toph mentioned this last episode, so that could explain her amazing skill -- she went straight to the source), and the Waterbenders learning it from the moon. It's speculated, but not stated, that the Firebenders learned it from the sun.

As for the "special subset," I don't think so, although this might be by design -- airbending is more about wit and evasion than having a "secret weapon."

As far as "explaining" bending it seems to be a combination of martial art forms and natural aptitude. It could be compared to musical training and talent. Some people are tone-deaf and some people have perfect pitch. Is it genetic? Who knows? But even a genius needs some amount of training.

Well I don't see a difference between sand and earth, after all, sand is just really really tiny rock. And the "plant benders" explained it as bending the water in the plants I believe, so I really wouldn't consider that an extra ability, I'd say they're just taking advantage of the physical properties of the plants.

The wiki claims that part of it is in fact a combination of spirituality and genetics. The citation is from a convention which would make sense because they would have to ask the writers to get that kind of info.

Also....yes, sandbending is just earthbending while the swamp people are just bending the water in the plants. The waterbending is driven home in that the Swamp Skiing short bit thingy.

But one thing bugs me. How DARE they "secretly" advertise nickelodeon in avatar.

I'm just saying, if you're going to consider lightning, metal and healing as specialized subsets, you have to do the same thing with sand and plants. It's not like they make sense overall—metal is not rock, even though some alloys have rock in them (like carbon in steel). Lightning is not fire; there's no combustion, only ionization. Toph was severely out of her element in the desert, despite being a genius earthbender, and only one of the swamp guys was ever shown bending more than plain water. Healing could be explained by the human body being made up largely of water, but we're just grasping at straws now. It's a cartoon show. If it were produced by Tolkein we could expect a coherent system that was fully explained, but it's not.
