I think that's very common. Extending to lots of non-human things, from the companies you work for to TV/radio shows you have a habit of tuning in to. It's actively encouraged (maybe even created, it's hard to tell) by marketing (in a very broad sense of the word; consumerism and careerism are I believe very much tied together... and I realized this when my manager recently gave me a raise and showed me list of engineering positions in the company that looked like a menu at a fast food joint, and was very much concerned with "giving me the lifestyle I deserved"). I have worked very hard over the last few years to divorce myself from sense of duty to anything but myself and other people that I care about; not corporations, products or anything else. I'm not there. It's damn hard.

i can't think of any good confession really... maybe this for starters:

i don't know if this makes me weird as a boy, but i find porn rubbish. i do masturbate, and i am aroused by beautiful women, but there's just nothing sexy about what you find on 99.9% of porn sites i've ever come across. from time to time, i'm on the computer and it's quiet, and i feel a bit like some naked girls. 'ooh, lucky i'm on the internet!' i think. i proceed to start looking at some porn, and after 10 minutes i just think 'what? this is rubbish!'

a few years ago, in my early teens, i looked at a fair amount of porn... probably not as much as a lot of other boys my age, but a fair amount. it was exciting, probably just because i was young and it was before i had any real life sexual experience and because it was something i 'shouldn't have been doing', but these days it just seems to be to be really void of any 'real sexiness', for want of a better phrase. i don't know, i could probably work out a good and eloquent argument for this, but i won't right now, firstly because i have to go to the pub, and secondly because it's off topic.

Mandolins rawk, violas are pretty cool (esp electric ones. they just look awesome), and the Bass Guitar is the best instrument known to humankind.

I suppose another secret you could pull out of there is that I can't stand rock music (of any kind--classic, metal, etc.) for anything. Never much liked the more percussive instruments, the piano is an exception, and between the semi-percussive guitars and the drums rock music more than its share.

I have an irrational fear of insects and spiders. I know it's irrational and that most bugs will never hurt me, but whenever I see one - especially one of the flying variety - I stay as far away from it as I can.

The only exception is ants, and only when they're outside on the sidewalk. When I'm wearing shoes. Okay, that's not much of an exception.

I once heard a bug banging against the ceiling light in my room late at night, and engaged it in epic battle. After killing it once (it seemed to come back to life or something) I realized it was a ladybug. Shall I post the whole story?
