Yesterday at work.

I sneeze into my shoulder at work three times. A customer asks me if I should wash my hands, and I told her that I sneezed into my shoulder. She gets her kids and starts leaving the store...I said under my breath "are you serious?" and somehow she heard me from halfway across the store lobby...and answered yes, she's serious, and I should wash my hands because germs get everywhere.

I should have pointed out that by her logic, when she sneezes, I need to wash my hands. Fuck you, asshole. We sneeze into our shoulders so we don't have to get off the line take gloves off wash our hands put the cheapest gloves on the market on put another pair on because the previous one tore whilst being put on put another pair of gloves on because the previous ones tore whist being put on and seriously there's twenty people behind you, fuck you asshole. Maybe I'm allergic to your kids. Maybe it's contagious?

I hate televisions. I enjoy some programs, but the number of people who just leave TV's on, as "background noise" or a default activity or whatever... I feel like I'd rather never see a TV program again. It really has started to bother me a lot.

Yes. The amount of electricity my mom wastes because she likes to sleep with it on...well, when I move out, I'm probably going to show her my electric bill and gloat.

I've always felt this way before. Recently however, I've noticed that having a sitcom playing on my laptop whilst I'm working makes me more productive.

Well, the work I do is probably slower than without the sitcom, but I do more because I procrastinate less. I think it tricks my brain into thinking it's procrastinating when it's actually being productive.

So, I've gained some sympathy with those people now.

Continuing the commercials rant: last time I went to the cinema, they showed like 20 minutes of normal commercials and only 2 movie trailers. I like seeing movie trailers on the big screen.

Here, a lot of the movie theaters show about half an hour of commercials and "first look" behind-the-scenes clips while the lights are still on in the cinema. Once the lights are off, you get a couple commercials usually advertising how awesome your movie experience is going to be because you saw it at this particular movie theater, and then you get to see the trailers.

Somewhat related: There's a sports/outdoorsish store in downtown Seattle, and they have a huge screen showing happy people using their stuff.

A few years ago I probably would have thought "Wow, this is a dumb commercial", but now I just think "Wow, this commercial has a ton of white people". The video's like ten minutes long, and there's a black woman hiking about halfway through... Hooray for diversity.

Reminds me of how the last rock concert I went to, I went with one of my friends who felt obligated to point out every black person there and say, "Look, you're not the only one!" Like, I know that. Even if I was, who freaking cares?

Hate is a strong word. It works.

There may have been a time when TV was innocent.
When it was taking its first baby steps.

It was like a High School Glee Club and oh so much more.
There was no Programing. So, funny. So, clumbsy. So, sweet.
TV like most babies, was Charming.

It Grew Up.
Its an Asshole.
That shit Happens.

Cute Baby becomes large Sexually provocative child becomes Manipulatve and Demanding Teen becomes Crude Trashy Adult becomes Bored Cruel Self Indulgent Mean Old yuck.

Can it change? It is still a Crude Trashy Adult.
Can a Crude Trashy Adult ever become something better?
Or; Is TV beyond the Point of No Return?

TV is, so One Sided. The Choices are, so Limited.
TV could remain a good way of Teaching Basic Shit.
2+2=4
Ohio means Good Morning.
Bob Ross puts another generation of People to sleep.

TV frightens me. I have seen shit I do not want to see on a screen.
The screen is compelling. The colors bright. The Music and Voice overs difficult to ignore.

It seems so real. It is not real. It seems so real. It is not real.
The other people say it is real. That is Important!

I may not think it is real. If everyone else thinks it is real, I had better figure it out.
What are The Basic Facts I should be able to gleen from TV?

Everyone is an Asshole? It is only a matter of degree?
Fear and Lothing are The National Passtime?

The colors are Amazing! I have no idea how it works, but it does.
The real world is a pale subsitute. oh. The Internet. umm.

The internet is two way communication. Right?
It can be all three.
World to Individual.
Individual to Individual.
Individual to World.

The internet is Great! TV is very pretty.
It depends what is playing on That Thing.

I listened to a woman speak on Wednesday.
She said, "Our people are ill-mannered."

I think she is right. The TV is like a Movie or a Book.
Well mannered people treat it like a tool.

Well mannered people may well Decide to watch something together.
Well mannered people talk about the Rules.
When is the program played?
Where will it be watched?
Who sits where?
When do we make Popcorn?
Something to drink?

At what point do we pull The Plug on this thing?

Ill mannered people have that Stupid Thing on ALL The Fucking Time!
It is important to people. I am being unkind. Humans need one another.

The screen allows people to have the most delightful friends.
The screen is sometimes a window into a better world.

Excuse me. I will not advocate taking TV away from People.
TV is important to many people. It might be nice to get the Porn off daytime TV.

It could ease out the way it eased in.
The News. The first change I would make is in The News.

What? The whole fricking idea of me considering limits on freedom of speach is silly.
Silly. Just, silly. I think people should say anything and everything that is on their minds.

That's How We Know Who The Assholes Are!!

Mission Complete! We know who The Asshole are.
They have been frightening the Old People.
They taught the Adults to Fight with One and Other;
and be proud of it.
They showed a child Death before showing the child Life.

I don't care much for TV. It is not a bad Tool. It is poorly used.
I like the internet. TV and the internet are almost the same thing.

In what way are TV and internet different?
TV is one way. Internet is interactive.

Anythin else? The BBC. oh, To sing the praises of The BBC.
Open minded to the point I had to pick my brain up after I kicked it under the sofa.
So, funny. Some BBC stuff. They are not as prudish as the accent sounds like they are.

What was I watching? oh, dear. Really? yep. After 11 on BBC some number the Love stories are sometimes realisiic. oh, dear.
The BBC. yey! The BBC.
I watched a BBC 4 documentary. The title was something like The Human Footprint.
It began with a little boy and a little girl sitting in a meddow of somekind.
The production showed the Things two people would use and produce during their natural lives.
It was funny. The BBC used a bulldozer to pick up the amount of dirt equal to the amout of feces produced in a lifetime and dumped it onto a white fixture sitting in The Meddow.

I was On The Floor laughing. The Voice over was so funny. Serious, English accent, and all the words were strung together to work with the visuals. By the time the dirt engulfed the white fixture I was helpless.

yey! The BBC! The very same documentary, The BBC hung cheep, clear glass globes from tree branches over water. The globes were reflected in the water. Each globe held water.
The Voice over explained what Tears are. What the functions of Tears are. What kinds of things make us cry. Joys and Sarrows and wind and pollen and stuff.
Humans are crying all the time. Sometimes we know it, sometimes we don't.
I was crying like a baby before The BBC moved on to some other silly BBC thing.

TV is not All bad. We are, just, not doing it right.
Better to not do it, if we can't do it Right.
Life is, just, an exchange of electrons; It is up to us to give it meaning.

We are all in The Gutter.
Some of us see The Gutter.
Some of us see The Stars.
by mr. Oscar Wilde.

Those that want to Know; Know.
Those that do not Know; Don't tell them.
They do terrible things to people that Tell Them.

I don't have a problem with the content of TV (well, mostly). I have seen people waste their lives away watching classic cinema, or powerful contemporary social commentary. It's the medium (and people who leave it on it as a default), not the message, that I hate.

(here with a space to myself for the first time in literally years, I am typing this with TV baseball on in the background, make of it what you will).

I really like there being random background noise/talking while I work, even if I don't pay attention to it. Like eSOANEM, it appears my brain thinks of it as if I were procrastinating, but I get things done a lot faster. I think it just sets a pace for me - instead of silence or the gaps between songs, there's a constant flow of stuff happening.

Of course, my computer sleeps when I do.

Well, no more Netflix on the TV - we still watch it on our laptops, but then its more of a conscious effort to turn it on (usually when snuggled in the bed, which makes for a far more cosy viewing experience). I'm pretty certain I haven't watched any sort of TV in about two weeks (so I'm a bit behind on Dr. Who and Once Upon a Time, but other than that, who cares?)

Huh, I just realised that if I lived in the US then I could easily describe myself as of German ancestry and go for the whole sauerkraut and sausage and beer thing on weekends with a group of like-minded people.

Whereas here I'm just an English guy who happens to have 1/32 German ancestry (within the last five generations or so).

I recently found out that my mother's mother's mother's mother's mother's mother was black, the child of freed black slaves in the Dutch West Indies, so according to the old "one drop rule" (or my mitochondrial DNA for that matter) I'm "black", even though I'm more Irish than anything else, followed closely by Italian, then Dutch, German, and English... basically the whitest guy around.

Pfhorrest: I am the palest person I know, and I hang out with goths. I have ashy-platinum hair with just about no *color* in it. Also, I'm half Diné (Navajo). My mom looks a lot like this lady. Pops was apparently also pretty melanin'd, dude was Russian by way of Mongolia. What the fuck, genetics. What the fuck.

Whereas here I'm just an English guy who happens to have 1/32 German ancestry (within the last five generations or so).

I'm not German at all (as far as I know; I am the definition of mutt), and I do that whenever I want.

I used to care about nationality but I realized it was just another false construct to create a group sense of pride. I didn't do anything to get Irish ancestry. Who cares if my ancestors that I've never met were such crappy farmers that they forced themselves into mass starvation and came here to get away from their failures?

I think it just sets a pace for me - instead of silence or the gaps between songs, there's a constant flow of stuff happening.
Work near a server room, and leave the door open.

CONSTANT WHITE NOISE with occasional beeping which means something terrible has happened.

My work station is 1 foot from the server. The noise will drive you mad. And the projectors are no better. Who knew a 1000 watt light bulb needed such a big cooling fan?

This exactly. I take great pride in having such a muddled, hidden background because it gives me the license to do whatever I want, take the best of all cultures, and create my own.

How often do you want to do that?
Generation Y. I don't remember the First Gulf War, but do remember floppy disks.

Focus groups always get asked "if [brand/product] was a person, what would they be like?" and EVERY focus group is terrible at this question, and I'm really growing to loathe listening to it.
I mostly lurk. Hello.

Not as often as I actually can. I realize now that previous statement was a lie. I should have said, I could do it whenever I want. I want to do it at least once a month. I do it much, much less.

I've been taking online surveys for extra cash, and I loathe getting asked that question. It's a stupid fucking question.

Also, they sometime talk shit about the other annoying shithead that's almost exactly like them, like I'm supposed to give enough of a fuck to only want to hang out with them and never see the other one. Both fuckers should be thanking their respective deities that I even bother."

A few years ago I probably would have thought "Wow, this is a dumb commercial", but now I just think "Wow, this commercial has a ton of white people". The video's like ten minutes long, and there's a black woman hiking about halfway through... Hooray for diversity.

^ THIS. Well, similar enough. A few months ago a big new supermarket opened in the most ethnically diverse suburb of my city, where only about 60% identify themselves as 'European' (the only 'white' option), vs 80% for the rest of the city. There are Maori, Pacific Islanders, Asians, Indians, as well as smaller numbers of a bunch of different ethnicities. This diversity is what makes that suburb cool - huge variety in restaurants, food markets, shops, etc. However, this new supermarket has chosen it's external decor to consist entirely of huge and numerous images of white people smiling to each other with huge grins and loads of shopping bags (not even supermarket bags) in their hands and hoisted over their shoulders. It's not only cheesy as all hell, it's very in-your-face and completely unrepresentative of the local community. Partner and I are very tempted to head out there with some brown paint or something...doesn't fix the face shape and all, but it might make a point, at least? Damn their bright lighting and main-street position!
