Probably because of the date format if you changed it. If not, could you send me the source code of the page?

I think I'm going to write a parser after my coma so that it works with different formats too.

If I divulged that information, I could compromise the stability of Time itself.

I don't think I've changed the date format...

Unless it did so automatically since I live in the UK (which is DD/MM/YYYY)

EDIT: if it helps, here's my board settings, which haven't been changed since creating the account.

Alright, I've settled on an avatar. I know you were all waiting with baited (bated?)1 breath for the exciting reveal.

1. Even if bated is correct, I would still prefer to use baited, since it implies you've all been eating worms in an attempt to lure fish with your rancid breath, and that amuses me

Not only is it sadly lacking in pages, but the content of those pages are not nearly as entertaining to read as that of the OTT.

*Sigh* I'm now 13 pages behind (NewPage 495/508) . Well, might as well use this time to respond to pastposts that I meant to respond to earlier in Time.

Huzzah! Sir Tristam, I salute you, and offer my good right arm1 in your service.2 Already in this thread I have seen references to exploding cats, using cats to start fires, and other heinous3 cat-related crimes. My Dixie, who you can sort of see curled up under my chair (in case anyone was wondering what that was) also, I'm sure, offers her good right paw, as soon as she finishes her nap, which will be followed by some very important grooming, then looking out the window, and finally eating, at which point she will need another nap. But if you can catch her in between those things, I'm sure she'll help out.

1 I mean, it's pretty good. I'm not a body-builder or anything, but it works.
2 What the heck, I'll throw in the left arm too.
3 Heh, she said heinous.
4 This doesn't refer to anything. I just I can't stop using footnotes. It's a huge effort not to put them in emails at work.

I do not have a handle on how Outsiders reckon Time - it all looks the same to me. 100 days in a month seems appropriate (metric, right?)

(read: it was a joke.)

Yeah, I realized that. I was intrigued by the DM/DM/YYMD format and "fixed" it so that all digits are represented (though who knows what order, either one would be interesting to see implemented and the confusion that would ensue), maybe that is just the OCD kicking in.

Ooh, I can answer the last one. If you have seen Monsters, Inc., and remember the scene with Abominable and he offers them yellow snowcones ...

I shall coma. For any bug report on the Newpix Convertor¹, send a PM or let a comment on the Gist². I usually blitzs pretty quickly, but I skip some messages.

¹ Oh, hum, it should be written "converter"?... Nevermind, I like how that sounds, it's like a Terminator for heretic dates.
² Be sure to include: your date format, your timezone, and maybe the source code of the page giving you troubles.

Here's a thought that's possibly occurred somewhere in the past 500+ pages:

What if the inhabitants of this comic live in a world where time passes at the rate that we observe the comic passing? That's kind of an imprecise way to put it, but what I mean is... what if, to them, it feels like everything that's happened in the comic thus far has taken over a month (of subjective time-perception), but the events of the day are still only those which could occur in within the span of one rising tide. The sun has only moved like 30 degrees across the sky in all this time, etc.

Where I'm going with this is: what if they have so little experience of the world because everything in their world happens so damn slowly compared to their perception of it that they haven't had time to see more than one tide rise, or visit more than one river, or something?

I guess this would require that they age at a rate comparable to their perception of time, or else in order to be fully grown adults they would have to be old enough to have experienced a comparable amount of activity in their world as an adult would in our world. What if a month of subjective time passing can only fit 2 hours worth of activity in, so a year (12 months) of conscious experience fits into one rotation (24 hours) of their world. Then they'll only have experienced about 30 days worth of activity in their world (thirty rotations of their world) if they're 30 years old. It's totally understandable for a 30-day-old to have never seen a tide before, or not know how many rivers there are in the world. 30 years of thoughts and growth have been crammed into those 30 days, but it's still only 30 days of experience.

For what it's worth, I agree that the latest little exchange is about how much water the river's putting into the sea. They've got more rivers to find. If they can't cross this one, do we now get to watch them walk all the way back to the castle to search in the other direction?

At least we might get to see what la Petite has been up to. Preservation or vandalism?

I don't think I've done the wall-of-response before, but I'm too far behind with too many things I want to answer.

If they're well-designed, you get that little key-click sound, and a bit of tactile feedback.

Kind of like moving around atoms?

Yes, like that. I found one article (only one, unfortunately) that says the frame size for IBM's movie is about 45nm x 25nm. I count about 53 atoms horizontal resolution. If IBM decided to reproduce xkcd's entire "Click and Drag" at that scale, it would measure roughly .14mm x .06mm (.006" x .002") - so small it wouldn't cover two pixels of an iPhone.

Jeez Louise, that boy is small. People, if you haven't gone to look at that movie, go look now. Please.

edfel wrote:So, I'd like to know y'all ideas about this and that, just to see if we are somewhere near a consensus...

I think the nearest to a consensus we've come is this: Randall is fucking with us. Again.

Ebonite wrote:[snip]I was really, really impressed with jjjdavidson's song "Wonderful Walk". I appreciate it when a parodist (is that a word?) not only preserves rhyme scheme, but proper meter! That work of art belongs somewhere in the OTC Hall of Fame next to BlitzGirl's grid, BuffyGirl's hats, aubronwood's site, etc.

Wow, thank you! I'm absolutely anal about meter; it chaps me when I have to fudge a syllable or an accent. (By the way, I just call the process "filking"; 25 years in the SCA.)

Ebonite wrote:I've also wondered: what are the chances that Randall had a plan for doing something that he thought would be tricky or clever, such as:
replacing an old image with a different one, or
throwing in a "go to" loop to an old image thinking no one would notice the loop, or
hiding something under the white screen during the great Fadeout that he thought no one would see
but was reading the forum and realized he couldn't do what he planned anymore because he discovered we were tracking everything so closely?

Alternatively, what are the chances that Randall really thought we'd have figured this all out by now, has been reading the forum, and every day does a facepalm? "Noooo! 1000 images and they STILL haven't figured out what's going on yet? How many clues do I have to give them??"

Any of the items on your list: Maybe.
We're all facepalm fodder: Distinct possibility.

How do I insert an image so that it does NOT have that annoying caption? and/or can someone fix it for me?

FTFY. For future reference, just take out "thumb|" from the file tag. The thumbnail option allows a caption, but also insists on adding the "Added" caption.

Thanks for adding the originals!
