Nothing like a good bit of cake to settle back down after the Doctor Who finale... thanks mscha (and newpixbot)!
And congratulations htom!

Valarya wrote:mscha, how do you get the spaces in lines 4/8 ? I have them indented, but it isn't saving on submit. :(

Yeah, that was tricky. The forum eats leading spaces, so you need to use a different character that looks the same. Best candidate is the "non-breaking space".
Here's what I did. Works under Windows, on other OSes you'll need to find another way.
Start "Character Map". (Easiest: hit Start, type "chara", and it'll appear, probably on top of a list.)
Make sure character set is “Unicode”, and group by is “All”.
Now, after the lower case characters, you see: { | } ~ and then a space. That's the non-breaking one. Click on it, press “Select”, press “Copy”.
Then you can paste in in your message in the browser, and it won't be eaten by the forum.

(Apologies that this isn't in double dactyl. I didn't even try... ;) )

Did she trip over a Molpy? Poor Molpy... :(

Edit: no idea what she tripped over. Her own feet, most likely, there was and is nothing to see there.

Edit2: Molpy hole, that could work. Thanks, pelrigg.

I don't know why but this poem out of all of them suddenly made the accentuation scheme click in my head. It all makes sense now! It's very singsong, if you read it out loud.

Nice to get a tv show first for a change. Just a shame the series is over - it's a little like the end of Time. (note: reference to OTT/OTC, not a spoiler)

Update from the newsroom for you sports fans:

This puts the current "Slip And Fall" count at:

Cueball: 2
Megan: 4

We are rushing a news team to the site to find confirm the rumors that she was trying to follow a White Molpy in a waistcoat who was late for an important date.
And later a special report on the dangers of eating biscuits labeled "Eat Me" and drinking from vials labeled "Drink Me"

(And like mscha and flotter, I do hope she's not hurt. Bruised dignity perhaps.)

edit
added flotter to list of concerned citizens (noticed after submit)

Ok, HES was online mere nanopixes ago, and now he's gone :(

ALSO: I don't think I saw this from anybody else during my blitz-ketchup - From frame 1431 to 1432 (aubronwood), there's another set of disappearing thingies in the right frame. They are definitely being stalked.

Edit to add: Also, Megan looked up just before she fell, so a) what did she see, and b) is that why she fell, or is it the rumored Molpy? or both? Perhaps it was an overhead distraction by a raptorheronbunny ... the Molpies and Rabtors are in cahoots!!

Uh Oh!

PS - thank you, Pelrigg!

I've been lurk-ketchuping / stalk-ketchuping / cloak-ketchuping (?); and trying to come up with things to say about several subject. But since they're at a resting place, I'm not going to put going to revive them.

Don't worry, you're not the first to forget that. Even if it's slightly off from red, it's okay.
I continue to live up to my double-dactyl poem that I wrote for myself earlier today.

While we're on the topic of other comics, a fave of mine is help desk, wherein you will find his version of a noir. And while I was getting that link, I realized that I had a few other favorite comics too, and I have not read them for over a month!

@mscha I'm loving the color photointerpretations - the contrast between the background and the stick figures is especially nice.

Considering how slow OTT weekends tend to be, I'm tickled with the enormous number of double-dactyl responses. I have to congratulate some more of the early adopters (and grumble about the rules a bit [and offer a revision or two of my own]). To be fair, my original rules weren't as clear or complete as they should have been; I've edited them in the spoiler below and in my original post.

Warning: Really long wall of text verse. Thanks, everyone!
Spoiler:
Ebonite wrote:
jjjdavidson wrote:A double dactyl poem intends to commemorate someone (or someplace) in comic verse. It has rather peculiar rules:
  1. Each poem is eight lines long.
  2. Each line is double dactyl meter, except for the fourth and eighth which are two beats short (DUM-da-da-DUM).
  3. The first line is nonsense (traditionally "Higgledy piggledy," though not necessarily). Nerd translation: Information content should be at or near zero bits.
  4. The second line names the person or place to be commemorated.
  5. The fourth and eighth lines have a strong (masculine) rhyme; other lines need not rhyme.
  6. One line in the second half (usually the sixth line, but again not necessarily) must be a single six-syllable double-dactyl word (which may be hyphenated if you're desperate).
I figure that given the development of the OTT, it's perfectly reasonable that we should use our own fresh-minted six-syllable words for the purpose, rather than relying on standard English. (Though if anyone wants to use ailurophilia for, say, Latent22, that would be fine.) But I haven't been able to find any genuine occurrences, so far, just near misses like Buffydashery. So I'm having to make up my own. But that's what we've been doing all along, isn't it?

Okay, I'll give it a shot. Does this meet the criteria?

    Languages, smanguages!
    Ebonite wonders: are
    Sandwiches made out of
    Toast or a bun?
    Pluralizational
    Issues with "Lego" and
    Alternate meanings of
    "Bacon" are fun!

Excellent! Metrical, topical, and tasty!

AnotherKevin wrote:Hmm, I've never been much for dimeter dactyls. How about:

Peregrinational
Cueball and Megan have

no longer stand.
Faced with the sea's rise, an
investigational

them o'er the land.

By rule 3, the first line is supposed to be nonsensical (I didn't make up the rules; I just repeated them poorly). But having two hexasyllabical words instead of one, and rhyming them, kind of makes up for the rule-breaking. (But watch out for HAL9000!)

HAL9000 wrote:I wrote one for myself! Is that okay?
Here it is, but be warned: I'm not much of a poet (I can sing, though).

Top o' the NewPage it's
good ol' HAL nine-thousand
Vatican Milliner's
Perfect Cust'mer
Monomaniacally
hunting for rule-breaking
attributable to
human error.

I felt that "Vatican Milliner's Perfect Customer" fits well in mine, as I've been the main proponent of the title.
Also, sorry about the second-last line's not quite fitting, but I needed to maintain the integrity of the original quote.

Again, rule 3: The first line should be devoid of information content or nearly so. Also, the rhymes are feminine (weak), but there you've got me: I neglected to specify the rule for rhyming. Trust a computer to successfully sidestep a human's rules.

Another problem: Your fourth and eighth lines have the meter DUM-da-DUM-da instead of DUM-da-da-DUM. Of course, sound emphasis comes (literally) as naturally as breathing to humans, while a computer must depend on software simulation of air pressure in speech. (A minor fault in your AERO-35 unit, perhaps?)

I was puzzling over one for you, myself. My second line was going to be "HAL the unflappable," but that would have necessitated adding "Not Red" somewhere for clarity. I like your version better, particularly monomaniacally. BUT─
Please don't be offended if I suggest a revision (which I can't resist; as I've noted before, I'm a bit anal about meter):

    Jupiter Shmupiter
    good ol' HAL nine-thousand
    Vatican Millin'ry
    Perfectly Wears.
    Monomaniacally
    hunts for rule-breaking at-
    tributed to when a
    mere human errs.

Yay, thank you! An excellent construction, and a fun conclusion. I think we can safely ignore the minor violation of rule 6; I doubt anyone anticipated that the name itself might also be the hexasyllabloid.

I had to go to the Double Dactyl wiki page in order to finally get the Long-short-short piece of it. whew.

Yeah, these are tricky little mustards, harder than limericks. We need to think of a six-syllable word to work into this one, preferably a cute one.

Oh, dear, I've sucked in another one. ergman, that's great work from mscha's examples, but mscha has become a little overwrought. Take a look at rules 3, 4, and 6; these are what give true "double dactyls" their particular flavor.
